I make bacon salt and keep a little jar of it in the fridge. Cook bacon, put in a spice/coffee grinder and grind into a coarse powder then mix with about equal parts salt and adjust to taste. I then put a little salt in the grinder to get any leftover bacon because I’m not wasting bacon! I like using that to salt my kale chips. Lemon pepper is also good. I zest all our citrus fruit and add it to jars of salt or sugar to use for flavor and I like using lemon salt and pepper for kale chips sometimes to switch things up. I just add it after cooking so it doesn’t get a charred flavor. Salt and vinegar is my daughter’s favorite.
Thanks Jess! I’m a visual learner and watching you do this simple process helps me to be ready when supper gets here. I love Roots and Refuge Farm, but I honestly love this new platform 🩷
We love kale chips with salt, pepper and a little garlic. Sometimes we add a little finely grated parmesan cheese as soon as they come out of the oven. Yummy. The stems go to our sulcata tortoise. He loves kale too.
These is my jam right here!! YUMMY
Oh, that sounds yummy! I love parmesan and garlic so there can't be anything bad about this!
Every time my oldest granddaughter came over, she would ask me to make Kale chips! Unfortunately, she didn't realize that was not an option in the Winter here in Wisconsin.. LOL She's older now and knows when they are "In Season", her and her younger sisters love them!
Thank you ! I sent this video to my daughter and asked if she wanted me to grow her some kale. I remember as a child she’d get them from friends and love them. 😊
Can you make more kid-friendly healthy snack videos?? You’re awesome, Jess!
Sweet Jess, I made kale chips for my husband, and I a couple years back just using olive oil, and salt (Redmond's). I asked him what he thought about the kale chip. He looked at me and said, please don't make these chips again. I have to be honest, I didn't care for them either. The kale was strong. I'd purchased it from Whole Foods. Now if you mix kale with spinach, and other greens, and stir fry the green mixture with olive oil, salt, pepper, and fresh garlic it's delicious. I'm thinking it has to have more things added, and needs to be moist for my family to enjoy kale. It's good to see your boys enjoy the kale chips.
I found the time of year you pick your kale makes a big difference. It tends to have a harsh flavor in the warmer months and a sweeter taste in the cooler months. Some vegetables just need that kiss of frost to make them sweet.
@@judifarrington9461 Thank you!
My husband and I love to wilt down kale and then eat it with a bit of salt and a bunch of fresh lemon squeezed over it. 😋 soooo good! We do cut out the stem as it takes a lot longer to cook down and just doesn’t work for our desires.
Reminds me of the meme that shows a plate of kale over a trash can and says “Pro tip: If you stir coconut oil into your kale, it makes it easier to scrape into the trash.” 😂
I’m going to try making the kale chips!
I use coconut oil - it's a little lighter - and I add dried, minced onion for added crunch and flavor - sea salt, fresh ground pepper - YUMMM! I wish my kale grew as large as yours! I'm a newbie gardener.
Take a bit of the kale leaf off the tip, grab that rib top then pull down each side of the whole stem with your other hand to remove the leaf part, just like herbs, hope this helps ;)
We love kale chips at my house! I've made them for years but a few months ago I saw where someone recommended that you massage the oil into the kale in a bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes before cooking- I thought that sounded unnecessary but it really does make them so much better! I switch up the spices but we do love them tossed in nutritional yeast as soon as they come out of the oven ( I use the one bowl for marinating, tossing and serving - I am with you on the minimal dishes) my question for everyone is have you found a great storage method? I have tried multiple ways but haven't found one that keeps the crunch yet!
You might try popping them in the dehydrator for a bit. I've done that with homemade potato and sweet potato chips. It worked pretty well. Kale chips don't last that long around me. So, I've never had the problem.
So cute when u all 3 crunched into a kale chip...they really are crunchy!!
I like to make them in season so much that I of course over killed making them and froze them in a jar thinking what a treat in winter....nope they just lost their appeal in winter for whatever reason, so I finally smashed them all down and use them as seasoning for all sorts of savory dishes
Again another great video Jess!! I just LOVE ur kitchen videos ❤
I imagine if you have means to do vacuum seal jars they might be more likely to last. I have the parts but have not tried it myself.
Oh Kale Chips are honestly one of the only ways I will eat kale! (I do also like it cooked in soups.) My teenaged son enjoys them best with ranch seasoning or with ranch and chipoltle, salt, and a little nutritional yeast. I like them any time and with any seasonings but I think my favorite is garlic, salt and pepper.
Thanks Jess. It's always good to be reminded about kale chips. I actually even have some kale growing out in my garden here in the Pacific Northwest Seattle area right now. I love my salty snacks but it's kind of one of my New Year's resolutions is to get away from even the " healthy" crackers and potato chips. I actually love kale chips with herbs and Brewers yeast. I love the way you're always telling us about how you're cooking for your family and what they like. That's always a challenge. Love you so much! You're my go-to on CZcams.
Try doing this with your cauliflower leaves, they are so, so good…!!!! Love kale chips but the cauliflower leaves are dreamy.
I love doing this with kale, broccoli and cauliflower! Mmmmm! Thanks Jess!
I used to make these when the kids were little- they loved them. I haven't made them in a while. My kale didn't thrive last year like it normally does. I'll plant more this spring and give these another try! I do like a little garlic powder on them with the salt and olive oil. Flaky salt works well also if you have it.
I put oil, soya sauce, sesame seeds and cayenne. 😊
I’ve loved Roots and Refuge content for many years, but this new channel makes me feel like your best friend. We have the same taste and approach to food.
I'd love a recipe for cornbread! I'm not from the south, so I'm very inexperienced with this. I remember liking it when I was a kid, but it was really dry. Thank you for making this cooking channel, I look forward to every new video!
When I was a vegan I blended up cashews added salt, nooch, garlic powder and coated my Kale chips in it to make it cheesy🧀. It's super delicious. Nutritional yeast /Nooch is Awesome I use it all the time in my cooking and on top of 🍕 and Salads 🥗 😁👍
I grew kale last year and I wanted to make kale chips but never did. I will be making them today. Thank you for the inspiration.
For the first time in over 10 years, I somehow didn't plant enough kale this winter. 🤦🏼♀️I have always had WAY too much in past seasons, and so I cut back this fall... but apparently, too far back. It's been such a pain to try to ration something we've always grown in abundance and even more painful to pay OVER $3 a bunch at the store or farmer's market when we don't have enough for a recipe we're craving! But we did spring for a bunch to make some kale chips last week, and we fully agree... Lots of good olive oil and salt is where it's at! 🧂
My husband is the cook in our home, he added some paprika one time, and it was delicious, my daughter ate all of it!! 😅
I was eating some I had made as I watched your video! 😂 I dehydrate mine after I mix the kale with olive oil, salt, nutritional yeast, and a dash of cayenne.
My family loves salt and vinegar style with added black pepper
My “foodie” best friend loves kale chips with a sprinkling of truffle oil. It’s a different flavor for sure.
Jess, these are addictive. I can make a tray full, and eat the whole tray myself as a meal. I do use garlic salt and lightly sprinkle cheese while warm. So good
I wonder how they would taste with hot chili oil...
Ohhhhh I love that idea!
Oh I bet that would be awesome
I’ve tried it and liked it very much!
Your kids did so well staying quiet behind the camera while you were shooting the video 😄
My kale doesn’t get sweet before getting too old. I made kale chips but don’t care for them. I need to grow some tender ones! Thanks for sharing & those sweet young men 🤗🇨🇦
I was just about to make these 😅. I use salt and the slightest pinch of homemade cajun spice mix 🤌💋
Perfect timing. My kale is jamming.
I love kale chips with olive oil, a little parmesan cheese, salt, and garlic.
Sounds great!
As simple as this was, I'm very thankful that you showed me this! I didn't know it was in the oven and I didn't know it was this easy~ I really have to try these! I love a salty snack
Thank you for reminding me to make the kale chips before the brutal cold arrives.
Me and my five kids are obsessed with kale chips also kale and eggs! ❤
If I can successfully grow Kale, (even with 4 years under my belt, its hit or miss if I can actually harvest what I plant) I will definitely make Kale Chips. The crunch sounds so good.
I haven't been able to find the recipes for your food here lately. I love being able to print them out and put them in a book to use to cook from.
AGREED! I absolutely LOVE they r a simple PDF and I don't have to scroll forever to find the recipe 👍👍🥰
I plan to make these this week as I pull out my bolting kale plants :)
My family doesn't like the taste of kale no matter how I cook it. So sad! Glad you all ❤ it!
I don’t have any kale now but I have sweet potatoes and this inspired me to turn some into fries.
Jess, I'm happy to announce that I'm Dino Kale rich. 😂
I put it in the air fryer. 5 min is tops.
I haven't made Kale Chips (but will, now) before, but I like to season potatoes with Slap Ya Mama's seasoning and hot sauce. It's a favorite at my house!
We sprinkle a little apple cider vinegar with the oil and then add salt for a healthier option of a salt and vinegar chip (my sons favorite)😊
I like to make them with salt, garlic powder, and red pepper flake for a spicy kick. But similar preparation.
I made some this past spring. Same thing - Olive Oil and sea salt. Wasn't a favorite. But I do like taking Kale and cooking it down with some onion and garlic. Sometimes the same but add a can of black-eyed peas or field peas with it and mix together. That's a tasty side dish.
I’ve made kale chips and was enjoying them until my mom started to tease me about grazing. It just set something off in my head and I stopped eating them. If I grow kale this season, I may give them a try again.
As soon as my plants produce enough leaves, I am going to try.
I love them with a touch of creole or black truffle sea salt with fresh black pepper
Me and my kids love kale chips. Either by themself or a little seasalt. So yummy!
I have made these years back and loved them. I used spray olive oil using less oil.
Avocado Oil and a sprinkle of Tajin (ground dried chile peppers, including chiles de árbol, guajillo & pasilla, dehydrated lime, and sea salt) on a metal half-sheet pan w/ foil and a quick spray. I too like to stick to a single layer and half way through baking rearrange a bit (by hand) because some may be on the bottom stuck to the foil and needing a bit more air to really crisp up.
Yum!
Love to make kale chips! My grands gobble them up. I do like the an assortment; nutritional yeast/ salt/ paprika/ oil/ be sure to dry the leaves after washing! They may steam instead of crisp up! I use my dehydrator instead of my oven! Yum!
Thanks Jess!!
Love the simple, easy veggie ideas!! 🥰
Question: on one of your videos can you go into more detail on how you wash garden greens? 🤷🏼♀️
I never seem to get the bugs off unless I actually wash each single piece. 😕
I was just coming down here to ask. I thought it was a really weird question, but I'd love to see how to properly wash different types of produce from the garden.
Rinse them in a sink of water with some vinegar, some also use baking soda. The diference is night and day between what comes off of them and what doesn't, try it with strawberries...the critters float to the top, lol
Fill the sink and add some salt. It kills off the bugs. That should help.
@@BobbiPlumlee - thanks! I’ve never tried baking soda. 👍🏻 I’ve tried vinegar & salt without much success.
I use salt, garlic powder, notch (nutritional yeast) and sometimes smokey paprika. Thanks for the video!
Love kale chips crispy!😋
To mix it up sometimes I sprinkle Montreal Steak seasoning on my k-chips ~ Rhonda
Good to know as I have plans to grow Kale early this Spring.
Great idea for the Daniel fast.
That’s when I first found them! Also, baba ganoush with homemade tortillas, white bean chili, sweet potatoes with brown rice, spinach, mushrooms and onions all sautéed together. I used to do the Daniel fast pretty frequently!
Yum
Yummy!!!
Made some last night! I put olive oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and a dash of cayenne on mine.
Love this Jess!! We do nutritional yeast, garlic, onion powder and tajin on ours - so delish!
Love kale chips 😋
wonderful. I love Kale chips. I am weird, sometimes I spritz them with pickle juice and sprinkle dill on them. Other times I use salt, nutritional yeast and pepper and I spritz with olive oil before I season. I also like to use curry powder.
I love them with a lil tony Chachere's sprinkled on them and my husband likes La hot sauce or jalapeno powder
I love kale chips. Even more than potato chips. Home grown are the best!
Perfect timing. Just harvested some kale and was just thinking of what to do with them.
One of my daughter's absolutely loves Kale chips!
OMG! That crunch! I would grow kale with intentions of eating it and end up composting it. However, I never tried to make kale chips and I have no idea why! However, I now have the motivation to plant some kale seeds and patently wait for some home grown kale to make some delicious kale chips!!!
We need this. Thank you, Jess.
I walk away and burn them more times than I can count, lol. So yummy when they survive!
I have never tried kale chips, but I'm going to give them a try this weekend! That might help me decide to grow some kale in the garden this year. Thanks for your great content here and on Roots and Refuge! I am gaining courage and skills in the kitchen and the garden!
I made them using bacon grease and salt, then added garlic after they were done. Pretty good! But I think a more neutral flavor would be better that or I burnt them a bit😂
I love making these. It took me a few times though the first time I tried. Burnt kale chips are not tasty, lol! I put salt and a little cayenne and we all love them.
My daughter loves them too!
I season mine with a Kinders steak seasoning. So it leans garlic and peppery
I have never tried them. I've really tried to like kale - and I just can't get excited. But I think I could do this. :)
I tried kale chips a few years ago and hated them. But I am certainly willing to try them again once I can grow some kale in the garden. I wonder if using the bland store-bought kale was why I didn't like them the first time.
My favorite kale chip: nutritional yeast, garlic and a tiny bit of cheyenne pepper powder. 👍
We just tried this!! My family normally doesn’t eat kale, but they tolerate this. Hopefully I can turn them. Hehe!
I'm made them using Italian seasoning and parmesan
Tons of Kale in my AZ garden right now so ran out picked it and got it in the oven! I forgot about this, so thanks for the reminder!
I love to make these with ranch seasoning.
I love kale, mine is stil relatively small but once it takes off I will make them.
Definitely going to have to try this!
I use Nutritional Yeast for flavoring to our Kale chips
My favorite kale chip is nutritional yeast, salt and granulated garlic !!
This makes me want to grow kale!!😁
I love Old Bay Seasoning on mine.
I use everything bagel seasoning with olive oil. They are better than potato chips! It definitely makes them taste less like kale!😆
Trader Joe’s Green Goddesses seasoning is amazing on these chips!
Going to try❤❤❤
Going to try it
Kale is in the garden plan
I can't wait to make these this season with fresh garden kale!
Man now I have to add another thing to the garden ....never grew up eating kale so I was hesitant to try it but this would b great if I could grow my kids chips!
I’ve done kale chips in an air fryer and use oil , salt/pepper and garlic powder 5min at 325° check, shake pan and cook maybe 2 minutes more You can use oil in an air fryer It’s like using a convection oven ❤
