- If you’re looking to find your own unique portrait photography style then themed photo sessions just might be the secret to unlocking your best-ever portrait ideas. You can use a theme to tie different portrait sessions together with a repeating style. A theme can take a basic portrait and add layers of context and emotion until it becomes a story. Or perhaps you just need a good excuse to pick up your camera and take some portraits. Whatever the reason, having a theme for your next photo session has many benefits.
In this video, Photographer Gavin Hoey takes you through his process of developing a simple style idea into a full-scale themed photo shoot. With the look already decided, Gavin’s first job is to try out various backgrounds in his small home studio to find one that matches the theme. Next Gavin shows how the theme can be further enhanced by a simple one-light set-up.
Finally, Gavin shows how you only need to theme what the camera sees. He adds a few props and a couple more Flashpoint lights, to really maximize the style of the themed photo session.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Jak na to + styl
The biggest problem for me isn’t the technical part, but rather the creativity, or lack there of… That’s why I absolutely love these videos from someone who is that creative and never seem to run out of ideas. Great and very informative and entertaining video as always Gavin 👍👏
Same here but ad the other issue of where do you get the outfits and props?
For me, the technique is almost never a problem. Keeping the creativity rolling on is.
Which is why I watch all your videos. They're more than often very inspiring.
Гэвин - бесконечный генератор идей!👍
A world with Gavin Hoey in it is indeed a great world to be in. All the best to you mate..... cheers, from Canada.
Finding 'models' / people to sit for portraits.
Love having a theme 😊
Love it, you never run out of great themes Gavin 😊
Having the proper equipment and accessories.
Thank you again gavin. Love it
Thanks, Gavin! Props are a serious issue for me, if only because i have to drag them to shoots along with all my gear. It makes it very challenging particularly if I'm shooting on location or up several flights of stairs. 😅
Awesome!! love the pocket watch and style of clothing.
Thanks Joseph 😊
You are amazing Gavin.
Love the theme Gavin, it has that Sherlock Holmes look to it.
I hadn't thought of it like that... elementary 🔍
For me it’s coming up with a concept or developing a client’s concept, then location and background if they want a location but haven’t got one in mind. Then lighting accordingly and then posing.
Gavin has always been a great teacher
Excelente Gavey!!! Muchas Gracias por compartir!!!
great video Gavin, probably lighting and working in studio useful flash input, informative content
Thank you for sharing your method 😊
Gavin Hoey great video as always
Excellent lesson! Thank you 👍
❤love the video great ideas for photography
i love this dude
loving your skill Bro🥰
great video, thank you!
Thanks Gavin and Chloe.
Love the way you style these shoots Gavin. They work so well and look amazing. Beautiful images as always 😊😊
Thanks Paul. Styling is a group effort. My idea, Sam's prop selection and Chloe's boyfriends suit 👍
@@GavinHoey your a great team mate 😊
Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to say I enjoyed your tutorial so much! Can't wait to put my new skills into practice.
Your tutorial was seriously impressive! I learned so much and I'm feeling much more confident about this topic now.
I stumbled across your tutorial by accident, but I'm so glad I did! It was super informative and I'm excited to try what I learned.
I've been working on improving my skills in this area for a while, and your tutorial was just what I needed to take my knowledge to the next level. Thanks so much!
Your tutorial was such a great resource! I'm really looking forward to sharing it with my friends and colleagues who are interested in this topic.
You're so amazing! This shoot is so inspiring! I have trouble using the seconic and how to properly set my flash meters. I have the trigger and need to practice on the settings. But watching the few things you did gives me the confidence to go elahead and play with the settings. 👌🏾
Props for the great props and styling (sorry). Well done to all, great as always !
I see what you did there Alan 😉
perfect 👍👍👍
Hi Gavin that was brilliant. I’ve been looking for a theme to photograph my daughter and you’ve given me the perfect idea.
Excellent idea Paul. Enjoy 😃
cool video, thanks a lot !
Wonderful like this sir
I love your videos. I must say I am jealous of you for getting to work with such beautiful models.
I love theme shoots.
The thing I struggle the most with, is coaching the model doing the shoot.
Setting up onsite. Loading the truck, unloading the truck, setting up. Breakdown then loading the & unloading back to my storage unit
The toughest part for me would be props (theme) and what to use to make the portrait sessions look interesting. Thanks to your videos, I think I have the lighting technique down ☺. As always, I love all of your videos Gavin! Much appreciated.
As they say in that famous Tina Turner song,(Simply the best) your videos are always very creative, Cheers Tony.
The best
For me it's knowing when I should select a specific lens for portraits. Typically I pick lenses and look at the results, without knowing which lens I really need until after I've tried one or two out. This tends to mean I pick lenses just based on how much room I have to move back from the subject. If I'm taking a group portrait, I can't realistically move back far enough to use my 75mm, so I'll pick the 25mm so I can stay closer. And when I'm doing a shot of a single person, I tend to pick my 75mm 1.8 whenever possible just because I like the look of it, and to get the most bokeh. But it feels like I'm just guessing and going off intuition, instead of knowing the right answer for what lens to use. Does this make sense?
Great as usual. I would also love to see how do you post-process these shots...
Gavin honestly speaking for me the most difficult part is to find people to photograph really. Where i live in Portugal the interest is very limmited and I dont have any opportunities to get better
I know that feeling. I love living in the quiet countryside but less people around means less models compared to city living. When you find a good one, hang on to them!
My most difficult thing about my photography is the exposure compensation; I can never get it just right. Also, histogram knowledge
Nice🥰
Nice tutorials as usual. However this time a shout-out to Chloe for her portrail of the subject. It looks like she really got into it!
Space and getting friends or family to let me practice 😂
Friends and family are some the most challenging "clients" to photograph in my experience!
I am still confused with front light
Is your Om 1 camera a 4/3rds sensor 🤔
Gavin, great video as usual. Please, would it be possible to show a histogram? Much appreciated. Thank you.
Hello . what kind of monitor are you using for tethered thanks..
That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / Laptop without its type cover.
When I was in the Army basic training our official photo was taken after a long run we came in and washed our face and got dressed from the waist up to have our photo taken we were in out underwear and flip flops and you would never have known.
Great story Rick and "what the camera doesn't, doesn't matter" see is still as relevant today 😀
Our official photos was taken wearing only the shirt of the uniform on the underwear, using the same jacket for all the platoon, grasping It with one hand to close It and to make It fit 😅
Very timely for me. I've got my first really intense styled shoot coming up soon. I've been working on the mood board for it over the last few weeks and have just now gotten things kind of nailed down. Just like you went through, I had to get the right color and texture for the background, then think about the props, while all working around the wardrobe for a analogous palette. As you said, that is the part that takes the most time, so to keep from having to put that time on the model, I am working it all out beforehand....hoping that my vision will all gel at the time of the shoot. Thanks for the mental checklist!
I struggle taking portraits because I am not sure how it is going to look but I am not that great with taking pictures of people but other than that great video 1:11
what role it played
Tou are missing a glass of whiskey🙂
Whiskey in photo / video shoots is usual cold tea!
Working with (directing) models
It's a tricky one for sure. Mood boards are my secret to success. Models get a good idea of what to do before the session and I can refer back to them when my directions run dry during the session 😉
@@GavinHoey thank you, you make it sound so simple so simple :)
My issue is confidence and working w/ models. I have no idea how to find professional models to work with, and even if I did, I expect that I'll be intimidated and not know how to direct them or ask for what I want (partially because I don't know what I want). As a sports photographer, I'm used to shooting the action. As an aspiring portrait photographer, I'm totally lost.
Unless you're working with. Supermodel most pro models are experienced with working alongside photographers at all levels. Be upfront about your experience and they'll help you by taking the pressure off my doing awesome posing and maybe even with outfits and make-up.
Try an Instagram search for local models (or local photographers who tag models) and paying them a fair rate is usually the best way to kick off a conversation.
Sir please show up the editing of this above shoot.
getting models
getting a friend to model most difficult
Well structured and presented video as usual, but given that you have placed some emphasis on the background I think a bit of a reality check is required. It's all very well using these backdrops but for most they will be well out of their price range. Perhaps something a bit more down to earth for the amateur photographer who will be able to relate more to the equipment your using and therefore feel more comfortable in being able to achieve these results themselves.
Hi James, thanks for the comment. The great thing about photography is it's a fantastic place to exercise a bit of creativity, such as painting your perfect background... like this czcams.com/video/U3bELLjNV98/video.htmlsi=-yd0r42UE9lTmZBx
You may need to step up your game. Just sayin.
What is your setup with the extra screen?
Oh sorry, i just saw the same question and an answer
Mine is… no room, no model…. 😢🤪😂🤣😂🤣
Most difficult part of portrait photography for me is getting people to pose.
Getting a model is my biggest problem, sadly....
Me thinks there is much rummaging in charity shops to find props.
It looks so ugly, frontal light don't do so!
