I do not recommend using water to clean the circuit board because water can go into components such as the mains transformer or the variable tuning capacitor and cause corrosion damage inside of it or defeat the galvanic isolation of the mains transformer.
I would use other cleaners next time or just blow the dust off the circuit board with an air compressor.
But it is still a good restoration video and it came out cleaner than before and it works.

You do need to be somewhat careful with a compressor too, a moisture trap would probably help. I think they can also create static.

I know everything's designed to a price, but I can't imagine spending this kind of time restoring one of these once I saw the internals on those speakers. I grew up with bottom-end brands like GPX (since that's what kids get), but I always assumed Sony products were built significantly better inside. Good on you for keeping it alive.

    Sir,
You did a beautiful restoration on this Sony CFS-W350S. I have heard of a circuit board being washed with water, but this is the first time I've actually seen it being done. It really does appear to work. I would think afterwards you'd rinse the circuit board off with distilled water so there's no mineral residue. Very impressive work! Thanks so much for putting this amazing restoration on CZcams.

For all the people out there not knowing, pcb-s and electronic components unless powered on can't be damaged with water. Especially distilled water. Water is non conductive. It's the impurities in it that conduct electricity. So powerwashing a pcb and thoroughly drying it might be the cheapest and easiest way to clean it.

Let me address a few things. First, I'm not sure this is a "restore" in the strictest sense. A belt kit, calibration (both mechanical and electronic) were not installed and performed. Secondly, it is true that you can wash electronic components including pcb's, but for previously energized IC's and capacitors on-board I recommend draining them thoroughly by grounding circuits for a couple days first. I also do not recommend pressure washing old parts (mechanical or electronic) without a certain way of identifying present components (in other words, take high res pictures and have a troubleshooting printout)- high pressure has a way of blowing off skimpy loose springs or transistors you might not have noticed. Use only purified water without additives since tap water is a big no-no for cleaning components because it contains metals and other contaminants that will stick to the components and pcb. I should also point out that anything that flexes such a thin pcb is prone to weaken solder joints which should be checked before, during, and after any restoration. Pressure washing, depending on temperature of the water causes undue stress on plastic components which are also chemically weakened in the drying process. I also do not recommend anything but plasticized painting component sprays as other paints tend not to bond properly to commercial plastics used in consumer electronics. Still, a skilled and experienced "detailing" of a very classic boombox. I am also glad that you did not change the speakers. They are electronically balanced for your system and the measured output matches the amplifier stereo circuits on the main board (in this case already aged components that the speakers have aged with). Only change them if one or both speakers fail and always change them as a pair on a stereo unit.

Lo bueno de dos artefactos antiguos, es la calidad , no la tecnología , fueron hechos para durar, hoy en día las mismas marcas ya no duran ...

ppl are all like OMG WATER! DERP! Ever drop yr phone in a puddle and dry it in rice? water and electricITY dont mix. inert unpowered components can get washed with anything as long as it doesn't strip anything vital away... Got a remote control that doesn't work anymore b/c of too many greasy food covered hands touching it? pull appart, wash circuit board in soap and water. THOROUGHLY dry, overnight, maybe ever a couple days... put back together and good as new!

You should do a restoration of some old pioneer gear from the 70's! I have a couple pieces I wanna do and I would love your input on how to do it. Maybe an old cassette deck? Pioneer ct-f750?
