GREAT PILOTING - Strong Crosswind Landing American E170 Hilton Head Island

  • A pretty amazing piece of piloting here given the conditions. We had a strong 25kt (around 30MPH) crosswind. On top of that, Hilton Head's runway is only 100' wide and 5,000' long around, so it's not as forgiving as most other airports, although the E170/175 is more than capable of operating in these conditions. Sorry about the camera slipping on touchdown. Enjoy the video, and don't forget to like and subscribe!

A few things. (1) The aircraft is an Embraer 170, not an E175. (2) The crosswind was actually directly perpendicular to the runway (90°), as evidenced by the wind sock visible just before the plane vacates the runway. (3) This was a super exciting landing, and it got pretty hairy toward the end. The video doesn't exactly do it justice because I had the camera on a mount, but SHEEEESH, hands down my most exhilarating landing yet this year!

No, you were right the first time, it was an Embraer 175. The E170 has not operated as part of the American Eagle fleet in some years now, and they were gone well before jet service began at Hilton Head.

Wow, the pilots are so skillful. Despite the strong wind, the pilots still manage to land to plane softly. Thanks for sharing this amazing video!

Amazing video, looks like a fun landing! For a second I thought it was going to slam on the runway, but the pilots definitely handled it beautifully. 😊

Good pilot !!!! He deserved the applause.
He made a difficult approach, but managed to land smoothly, made a soft touch on the runway.
As people say: a beautiful picture is for a painter in the same way that a good landing is for a pilot.

Thank you for posting. How pilots land at HHI has always been a mystery.

Craziest landing I had and I've flown since 83. It was the last flight into Tampa before hurricane Irma. I was coming in from Chicago on the mad dog the MD80. Listening to the pilot jockey the JT8D engines was amazing. After we landed the pilot said if the wind was one degree stronger we were going to Orlando. It was a crazy ride, the plane shook violently and you could feel the pilots pushing the rudder to keep the plane straight on landing. From short final to touchdown it was full throttle. And on the MD 80 my personal favorite to the DC 9. Get my drift I'm a huge fan of the JT8D engines.

I have been flying/instructing out of HXD for over 2 years. The big problem we have is how many trees surround HXD airport. When we get a stiff wind out of the east or west, the wind comes across the tree tops, finds the clearing of trees that HXD airport is, and creates a washing machine of downdrafts and wind shear. Many pilots will say “if you can land in Hilton Head, you can land anywhere”

Yeah, I’ve heard about the issues with the trees before. I’m down here right now, just flew in on another windy DAL flight a few days ago. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I obtained my private Pilot's license and flew with the Civil Air Patrol based at Hilton Island Airport. Because of the direction of the runway being perpendicular to the coast, you always get those winds coming from a 90 degree angle over the runway. Making it worse are the trees on all 4 sides of the airport making the runway down in a valley of sort. Even on a day with just a couple knot wind, you get quite a ride just above the trees. I am sure as a student pilot, I almost met God a few times learning to land there.

I'm really surprised they upgraded that flight to an ERJ-170 considering it used to be flown by a Dash 8 Q-100. Surprising how well that a jet of that size can handle 5000 feet.

  • @danielking104

I don't understand why anyone would want a soft landing with a 4600 ft runway with a 50ft tree line. The 175 is 73000 lb 2 seconds of flow with some gust added speed would be a go-around. Planes going into HHI is always at max weight because Jet A is super expensive there.
