  • In this episode, Billy discusses the main differences between our two solar battery options- our Gel Deep Cycle Battery and our Lithium Battery- and when you would choose one over the other Learning about off grid living for beginners can start to feel pretty overwhelming, so this series aims to answer lots of those questions with easy-to-understand answers.
    We recommend the Gel Batteries if:
    - You're going to run a smaller system (less than 48V).
    - You're living there part-time.
    - You want to run DC appliances.
    - You're looking for a more affordable option upfront.
    We recommend the Growatt ARK Lithium (LiFePO4) Batteries if:
    - You're looking to run a larger system.
    - Aiming to optimise space and weight of the system.
    - You're living on the system full-time.

    We got a comment on Facebook on this video that we'll share here too: How many lithium batteries would be required to replace the 4 gel batteries and retain the same capacity? Also why can you not run DC loads off of them (I have the 48v->12v converter module)?
    It's two of our lithium batteries to replace the 4 gel - because they can be discharged deeper it works out to about the same capacity. You can't run DC loads off the lithium because there's no terminal for it.

    can we go for 10 or 12 Lead acid batteries 12 volt in series to achieve 120-144 Volt for SPH10000 TL3 BH UP hybrid invertor.

      We do not sell this unit so we cannot give you an exact answer - but most likely not. Those units probably are best used with only specific growatt batteries.

    Informative video but should have included some prices.

      Appreciate the feedback! All of our pricing is available on our website and kept up to date, so we decided not to put the prices in the video as they do change, and we wanted this video to be accurate in the future.

    Hey Billy's workshop this is very informative work, have you heard of the latest technology from sugon?

    • @GridFreeStore

      Yes, we've heard sugon provides some really great technology.

    I am thinking of mixing li ion and gel battery option.I want Li-Ion be used on daily basis. And Gel battery just in winter where i need to stay 2-3 days without sun. I am thinking of buying system with 12kWp solar panels. Average december production is 300kWh. And averege monthly consumption is 175kWh. Will it work without interruption?
    Is it possible to conbine both type of baterries with Growatt inverters?

    • @GridFreeStore
      @GridFreeStore  Před 11 měsíci

      The units are not compatible with multiple battery types at the same time. You may need to have multiple units to achieve something like this, but multiple batteries for one system is not something we have done before. It is good that your estimated production is greater than usage, but it will not guarantee that you will never run out. It is all up to how much you use on each specific day and how much you have available. For example, if you run into a string of rainy days then you will be without power if you continue to use power normally.

    Hi, I wonder if you could help, I have a 150amp 12v gel batteries, that was in new packaging and not used for 5 years, and they are 8 of them, when connected to the 350watt solar panels with hybrid invertor, invertor saying low battery level, when measured it had 4 volts only makes noise long beeps,
    I now disconnected and charging each battery with 10amp electric car charger,,,,, very slow
    my worry after 14 hours charge I got 3 amp on the clock, and loosing this batteries due to long time no use makes me worry they are not cheap, what do you recommend, I from my side want to charge each one until it is full, then connect to the invertor,
    My gel battery is the same as your one gray colour but 150amp 12v, 8 years 3000cycles, but 5 years not used kept in store.
    thanks in advance Alex

      Hi Alex,
      Unfortunately, those batteries may be completely worn out. Without regular charging (to full, approximately every 3 months) a Gel battery will degrade. 5 years is a long time without charge & 4V is very low for a 12V battery. It is unlikely you can recover them as they have been sitting discharged for so long. If you plan to store Gel batteries for the long term in the future, it is best to keep them topped up every 3 months or so.
      Best wishes with your setup, Billy.

      @@GridFreeStore Thanks a lot, as you said it could be my pretty batteries that I thought I would milk for 5 years to come are gone, sad. They say in Somalia where I am working and communicating with you, ''the truth doesn't scare man'' I but 10amp charges and 48 or 52 hours it shows 6amp only, I will pump it one more day see if reaches, 9 or 10amp, I have nothing to lose, I guess they discharge and loose power quickly due to dead inside.
      I thank you for straight professional answer, have a nice day.

    I would like to no what if one of the lithium battery cell get error when charging. How long before my battery can start working again. It really means that I will be without power for some lengthof time/

    • @GridFreeStore
      @GridFreeStore  Před rokem

      We have not had this occur before so I cannot be sure exactly what would happen but if a cell fails in one of the batteries it is most likely to cause error codes on the battery & inverter. This will most likely prevent the system from working which would mean it is best to replace/remove the faulty battery quickly.

      @@GridFreeStore If you take battery out, no power for backup. Thats why I want to no what do you people do to keep your clients on !

    • @GridFreeStore
      @GridFreeStore  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@williebotha All our lithium battery systems have more than one battery. If you were to take one out then the system can still be used while we test the battery. However if this was not the case then depending on the circumstances, we would send a demo battery or replacement in the meantime.

    2.56kw Growatt battery makes no sense for the price I can get a 5kw battery cheaper.

    • @GridFreeStore
      @GridFreeStore  Před rokem

      With the extra usable capacity and the longer lifespan, they work out more economical in the long run, but definitely a big investment up front.
