    The whole “Minutemen are the failsafe” isn’t the only reason the game forces you into them. It’s because Bethesda forced this settlement system into an RPG, and so much of it hangs on what you do with the Minutemen. The BoS hardly does anything with settlements. The Institute doesn’t do a damn thing, and neither does the Railroad. What they should have done is implement the raider system into the main game from the start, rather than forcing it on you in a DLC that many would have started after being mostly done with the game.

    • @courier6960
      @courier6960 Před 2 lety +51

      Bethesda should have done a lot of things “from the start” with this game. So many bad choices and missed opportunities. That’s what happens when you get writers who don’t understand or care about the source material, and make decisions only for the sake of impressing the big wigs and for marketing.
      The settlement system was just a bad idea in the first place. There’s is physically no way of inserting a ton of fully player customizable locations that produce infinite amounts of materials without it being an absolutely exploit, glitch, and bug riddled nightmare. Not to mention since there’s no real building physics in this engine you can build things that ruin immersion or look downright ridiculous. This system so obviously put a massive strain on development time, considering that it effectively works as a replacement for towns and cities (when in no way it works as a replacement) and that so many story elements and mechanics were just left on the drawing board.

      I feel like the settlement system could have been so neat if they actually wanted to put work in to seem like they care. Instead, they rushed out an extremely unoptimized mess and then expects the players to just be okay with it. It could have been really cool. They bungled it so hard.

    • @MothmanOfficialWva
      @MothmanOfficialWva Před 3 měsíci +16

      @@ociferit’s strange how much effort they put into the settlement system and then essentially lock it behind one faction. Sure, you can “claim” settlements for other factions, but there’s no real story significance (outside of the safehouses). Maybe if each faction had a different way of doing settlements?
      Maybe for the Brotherhood, you can claim “outposts” which naturally have higher defense numbers than usual settlements, but exclude ghoul and synth settlers, decreasing overall settler count.
      The institute can try to redeem themselves in the eyes of the commonwealth (if you’re trying to do a “good institute” thing). Due to their technological advancements, you’d have higher food and water resource counts, but the stigma that the institute holds leads to overall lower settlement happiness.
      Railroad is the most difficult, as their whole “in the shadows” ideology goes against public settlements. But perhaps when the institute is destroyed they may become a more public organization. If so, perhaps an expansion to the safehouse system that they already have would be good.
      That leaves the minuteman as a “middle ground” option where they don’t have the benefits nor the downsides of the other factions, allowing for the minutemen to be the most flexible.

      The failsafe option should have been integrated into Diamond City. There's enough people and strength there that they could have been an appropriate fallback if you ran foul of every other faction while also being versatile enough to align themselves with any of the factions.
      Good Minuteman run? Diamond City supports them. Enemy of Minutemen? Well the real Minutemen ended at Quincy, Preston is just a pretender, but Diamond City endures without them.
      Good BOS run? They're strong and can help bring order to the Commonwealth. Enemies? They're thugs who only want to strip mine it, they need to be repelled.
      Align with or destroy Institute? The kidnappings and raids on settlements will stop, either way.

In this situation you'd rather be permanently locked out of interacting with Preston and the minutemen because of this. If you want consequences then make them using your honor. Don't talk to Preston anymore. Don't invest in certain skill trees. It's as simple as that. Why does the game need to do it for you? See it is stuff like this that would actually make sense in the Fallout world and it's why we never got even close to any of it with Bethesda, and only got glimpses with NV (which could have been an absolutely masterpiece of a game if it had not been treated like a side project.) Fallout 3 and 4 is not really Fallout. The Minutemen are literally just Boston- revolutionary war-muskets!

      I absolutely hate this entire "conflict". It isn't written well to be a real conflict and you cant do much about it. The entire premise of Nuka World is to get to be a baddie. Not a racist Bastard like the BOS, not a Institute Overlord, no misguided Railroader, no a real egomaniac the wasteland logically would create, especially with your backstory. So why in god's name, did they decide to give you neither the chance to go against the minutemen or to be friendly with Preston again?
      I only took one 3 settlements. Three of my own 30 god damn settlements. I took them by paying everyone involved damn good money and noone was hurt. Later on I killed all 3 raider gangs. When I returned to Preston, I got this resction. The fuck? I saved that guys life, saved his sorry little excuse of a mission at the beginning of the game, I rebuilt the minutemen, I am his general and I led the nicest raiders in the world, before killing them all, for the sake of them still being raiders and freed the vendors, creating a second Diamond City in Nuka World. Why does he hate me? I really dont get that. Also, how the hell did he find out? The whole ordeal is immersion breaking ans it makes the minutemen an even dumber faction. If no consequences are involved and you cant do anything to right your mistake, then they should just not make that a story in the first place.
      Preston is mad at you? Okay, then he might shoot you. Maybe he get's you kicked out of the minutemen, maybe he can be convinced to go evil too or maybe you can appease him with words and convince him (either by lying or telling the truth) that you are not evil. All of those could be short micro quests or just short interactions, done without much effort. His reaction not changing based upon your action just shows that Nuka World was not very well planned.

      Fallout 4's gameplay makes a few decisions like that seem really stupid yeah lol.
      Canonical story wise, I imagine how they thought it should play out is. Sole survivor helps Preston, goes back to sanctuary with them, helps them set up some food, water, beds, and defense. Preston mentions the another settlement needs help, and the sole survivors agrees to go help. A few days or a day later, they return, the settlement has been helped, agreed to join the group that was 1 man from dying, and knowing he's a soldier, not a leader, offers this person who is pretty much his last hope of rebuilding the group he idolized as a child the role of leader after seeing them willing to take charge and actually put in the effort to help people in need at the risk of their own life, fighting off an entire gang of raiders single handedly or with Codsworth or Dogmeat, to help someone just because it's the right thing.
      Gameplay wise it's just walk to this somewhat close by area, shoot up a few low level raiders, now he likes you.
      They also wait until his LAST companion conversation for him to explain why you were so important to him. Dude was borderline suicidal and this person who is basically the embodiment of the ideals of the minutemen shows up to save him and the people he wanted to protect.
      They wrote him like you'd write a character in a book or movie, where pacing and stuff are important, but in a game where you can do stuff in a day and killing 20 raiders in a heavily guarded factory is no big deal it seems silly.
      My last thing I'd say is, when he promoted you to general, he did put his trust in you, you agreed to become general, and he believed you'd follow through, now he sees it's a mistake and won't ever be able to believe in you again.
      Anyways, this shit is so poorly written for a video game where you can massacre the people he sent you to help and he just never brings it up.

Even though that means you have to help them it makes no difference from when you had to do what Yes Man said in Mew Vegas. This way you make the minutemen what you want them to be, Heroes, raiders, mercenaries, businessmen running caravan networks.

They could have written them as just people trying to get by and they just so happen to look to you as the leader because you saved them, as you said, so whatever choices you make they're all for it because it's for their own benefit at the end of the day. This actually could've been an awesome subplot. The main flaw of the Minutemen in-universe is that their democratic nature makes them divided and that their loyalty can be questionable when things get tough. At the beginning of the game they'd almost been destroyed and had most of their men desert because of that.
    So, this would've been a great opportunity to have a civil war within the Minutemen as some of them remain loyal to the Sole Survivor as leader and are willing to work with the raiders, and others follow Garvey. Finally do something interesting with this lackluster lazy knockoff of the NCR.
