- Digging and dividing daylilies is not something that needs to be done every year. In fact, depending on the daylily variety, you may never need to do so. Still, it is a useful skill to know if you grow daylilies because, chances are, you'll probably need to divide them at some point. The question is, how will you know when it's time to divide your daylilies?
In this video, Ken Oakes not only answers that question, but shows you how to do so. Don't be scared! Dividing daylilies may sound intimidating, but it's actually quite easy-and super beneficial for the health of your daylilies.

When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger - two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and produce more blooms quicker.
All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

I have orange daylillies that I dug up from an old house about 25 years ago and they still bloom every year in june

@@womanofwazoThey are Hemerocallis fulva and actually not a true lilly in the genus Lillian. Commonly called ditch lillies, tiger lillies, among other nicknames. They are considered an invasive that provides no benefit to native insects and that can overtake beneficial plants in a natural environment. Thats why they’re not sold at nurseries but there are sellers on Etsy, etc. I have them in my border garden where they can be controlled. I have to thin them almost every year and occasionally give away bulbs with the caveats I mentioned above. I love their numerous tall flowers that almost resemble birds in flight and their blooming signals the beginning of summer for zone 6. I got mine from my brother’s yard 15 years ago. He dug me out a couple of bunches and put them in a black plastic garbage bag so as not to mess up the trunk of my car. I didn’t get around to planting them until a few days later and they’ve thrived ever since. You can’t hardly kill them. I cut them to the ground when the blooms fade and they quickly regrow fresh green foliage that acts as ground cover for the remainder of the growing season, then cut them again in the fall and lightly mulch.

I have orange ones too in the UK. My late grandparents gave them to my dad 35+ years ago and now I've got some too. Amazing colours.

I dug up my Daylilies just last fall. Talk about Clumps of roots.!! No wonder I was hardly getting any flowers. I went ahead and split them and put some back in the bed. They came back fine.!
Dividing daylilies works wonders on established plants that don't bloom like they used to-- so happy you tried it and are pleased!

I have bunches an bunches of orange daylilies. It good eating their blooms. I have so many. I am planning to divide up some batches that have grown compacted & spread out the beauty as well as have plenty of blooms for eating 🙂

Hi-- thanks! We're having a lot of fun making our videos and appreciate you watching them! We don't have an issue with rust on our daylilies, but we do know that it can be a problem elsewhere. We recommend treating it with a fungicide and removing and safely disposing the leaves from the affected plant(s). I'm not sure what fungicides are available in South Africa. If you have local agricultural extension agents like we do here, I suggest you check with them to see what the most effective treatment might be in your area. If you don't have local ag extension agents, a reputable nursery or growing center should be able to suggest one. Good luck and thanks again for watching!

How long should one wait to dig up and divide the lilies?
At the risk of sounding vague, it depends on the daylily. Some daylilies grow faster than others so they would need dividing more often. (Some daylilies never need dividing!) You'll know if it needs dividing if a) it's become a very large clump and b) doesn't bloom as heavily as it used to bloom. That being said, it's typically a good rule of thumb that MOST daylilies could be divided every 5 years or so. Hope that helps! (And thanks for watching our videos-- we appreciate it!)

Great video! The one question I have is if I divide the day lilly but want to transplant it a week later will that be okay? How long can the clump be stored out of ground before replanting?
It's best to divide and plant the same day if possible. However, if you absolutely can't get both done the same day or the next, the next best thing is to temporarily plant it in a pot and water it well. If you don't have a pot available, it's possible to leave it unplanted for a week, but you'll need to move it to a dry, cool place that's out of direct sun. Once you plant it, make sure to give it plenty of water-and keep it watered-until it begins to green back up.
Hello from Avon Park FL, I have a patch of beach spider lilies, couldn't id them until they bloomed, have never seen these before, they really need to be dug up and separated, its now labor day, when should I get to work on these ??
Hi! We only grow daylilies, but from what I've heard, the best time to divide spider lilies is right after their bloom season. So now would probably be a good time

Yes! You'll need to keep it watered well since it's so hot out, but you can definitely divide it in August
Do I have to chop down the plants' green foliage in order to transplant?
Not at all! We do it because 1) the foliage can get in the way of our shovel (so it's hard to see where we want to dig and 2) the foliage will get ragged and brown once you transplant it so trimming beforehand makes it look neater while it's growing back out/greening up.

I have 2 large pots of daylilies that have been blooming for years and are very crowded. What is the best way to divide them without breaking my pot?
You may not love this suggestion, but we would take an old steak knife and just slice between them. You should be able to take them out in chunks that way and keep your pot intact. It's not pretty, but it's effective!

Whenever they need it. Daylilies can be divided throughout the growing season. We suggest not doing it in summer because it can affect their bloom. Right now, in early fall, is ideal.
