Blasting Through Plateaus As An Advanced Guitarist
When you’ve been playing for quite a long time you’ll likely encounter many stages along your journey. Sometimes you’ll run into obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. Unfortunately, as with most things in life, the really great things aren’t necessarily easy. If it were, everyone would do everything. And everyone would be great at everything. So to persevere it’s important to stay the course and work through the obstacles that come your way.
If you feel as though you’ve reached a plateau in your playing, I welcome you to get in touch with me to see how we can get you over your current hurdles and up to the next level.
Regardless, here are a few tips to help you in the mean time.
First off, be sure to be patient with yourself. Some techniques and styles will come to you very easily, while some will not. If you feel yourself getting frustrated take a break. Slow yourself down a bit. Once emotions get involved you’ll likely not be able to make the gains you really are looking for. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so give yourself some leeway and don’t be too hard on yourself.
While this may be pretty obvious, it’s worth stating very quickly. You must continually practice. Consistency is better than long sessions with long breaks of time in between them. If you can do a half hour a day and stay consistent, you’ll be on the right track. By practicing in this manner you’ll build up motor skills as well as finger (muscle) memory. You must practice to become better.
In order to keep yourself interested, it’ll likely prove to be helpful if you change up your routines. Experiment with new things as much as you can tolerate, but don’t abandon techniques until you’ve made progress with them. Too many seeds will require too much water to grow. Don’t spread yourself too thin. If you allow yourself to become bored, you’ll likely lose much of your enthusiasm and greatly hurt your progress. Challenge yourself but be moderate about it.
If you have any opportunities to play or perform for others, go for it! It’s a great way to add another element to the challenges your facing with regard to your progress. A little nerves might inspire you to work harder and a little applause might do the same as well.
While you may not be looking to become a teacher, teaching is one of the best ways to become much more proficient with your instrument. If you can find one student that fits into a level that keeps you on your toes, it may prove to be extremely helpful to you as well.
Watch how some of your idols perform in their own unique style. As each guitarist grows and gets better, they will inevitably develop their own nuances and intricacies that set them apart and make them truly unique. While you’ll surely develop your own unique style if you haven’t already, getting a taste of what others are doing successfully can only help you.
If you have the time and the opportunity, try to surround yourself around those that inspire you. In this case, try to broaden yourself to interact with advanced guitarists and musicians that can help you up your game. You don’t want to be the smartest in the room or the best musician for that matter. If you are, your likely in the wrong room. At least to be improving yourself.
And while mentioned previously, it’s worth noting again. Be patient with yourself and of course, don’t forget to have fun with it.
