Overhyped but Good: BattleBlock Theater

- This is far from a perfect game, and I wouldn't call it the Behemoths best outing for a handful of big issues that I'll be going over in this video- but man.. If it isn't a good time despite that.
Admittedly I never got into battleblock theater until years after it's release.. I figured it was a glorified upgrade of the PDA mini game from Alien Hominid with some sloppy combat thrown in- and believe me.. That combat is quite sloppy.. BUT, the puzzle and platformer side of it was so good that it became easy to forget anytime I wasn't fighting something.
It leans fully into the level editor aspect, placing an emphasis on the interesting interactions between the level tiles, enemies and stage hazards.
Whereas something like Mario Maker didn't show us the interesting new ways certain elements of the series worked in tandem until decades after their franchises launched, Battleblock theater comes out the gate with those interactions being the norm. You can tell that the level editor was created long before any of the stages were actually designed and that they organically crafted these areas with those synergies in mind. It's not uncommon for a level to cleverly use buttons in conjunction with switches, levels, and even movable objects.

About the section about gem collection/death: That only applies on the normal difficulty. Once you enter the Crazy difficulty, all levels are the same. The game simply removes respawning. If the contestant dies, the level resets and contestant appears back at the initial cage. In this challenge, for all A++, you have to collect every gem (6/7 per level) and the yarn ball, while moving under the time limit, and not dying a single time, either. It does slightly soften the ending sets, with each screen having its own spawn point, but still... it requires taking every one of those paths to safety, because otherwise there is no way to keep it
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I hope that The Behemoth continues to just use "insane mode" as a difficulty for every game they make. Really bittersweet memories of growing up with castle crashers and getting destroyed at the troll mom :)

Glad you mentioned Insane Mode for the video creator to notice. I legit forgot respawning in bbt was a thing until it was mentioned in this video, so it felt kind of unfair from my angle that the game was being judged for it.
One of the first things I ever heard about this game is, "There's a button that makes your character explode."
Big platformer fan, this is my favorite behemoth multiplayer. Coming out in the XD era, just found stamper hilarious at the time

i cant remember exactly but it was either this, castle crashers , or skyrim for being my first videogame ever played and i hold each of them very dear to my heart

I love all the Behemoths stuff but most of the time the actual gameplay falls flat for me, but everything else is phenomenal. Was able to play invasion awhile back and it's the most fun in my opinion. Haven't got recommend something about battle block in awhile so this was nice to see :)

Although I agree with most of the things you said, there is one thing you kinda missed. Insane mode fixes the issue with Gems as you reset the level when you die. Still a very good review 👍

3:09 being rela though, that inconsistancy can be the make or break for me with a game, its the reason why I despise super meat boy's 4th chapter and why I stopped enjoying Celeste after I got to the wind stages of the game, consistancy in a hard platformer is really vital as it does allow the player to plan a course of action, but I feel like Battle Block Theater doesnt need this factor, overall the game itself isnt hard as nails and in general feels like a more casual platformer, although I will agree with you on the sloppy combat, I have found myself losing many A ranks due to inconsistent enemy movement and patterns

@@flaco3462 oh I do, I’ve been through the same thing, idk what “bugs” you’re running into on singleplayer, but I had very little to no trouble with that when I did it (granted I had already gotten good at the game when I started trying for 100%)
Honestly I'd have to disagree with it not being Behemoth's best outing, I personally think it is, mainly because it's more fun, and more enjoyable to replay, with tons more replay value than any of their previous titles, not to mention Insane mode is way more tolerable in this game than it ever was in Castle Crashers (I'm convinced that Castle Crashers' Insane mode was never even tested with how high the barrier for entry is on it). It is also one of the more stable games they've made, now it's not the most stable, Pit People holds that title, but bugs in general with BBT are somewhat rare and usually happen in online lobbies with really bad connections (most singleplayer ones are caused by how the game's animation system works). Plus, BattleBlock Theater is one of only 2 games that have kept me continually playing them for over 5 years, I have been playing since 2015, and I've been consistently playing it up until a few months ago, if that's not longevity, idk what is. Now that's not to say any of their other titles are bad (besides maybe Pit People to some because it is just boring), they're still at the very worst, decent. Also, I noticed you somehow skipped Chapter 2 Level 3 there at 2:17
also fun fact: All the story levels were actually built with the game's level editor (albeit with some extra blocks not normally available to players, like RT button/W key prompts or invisible dialogue trigger blocks and the ability to change the foreground as seen in Chapter 8
