You could also cut a piece of rubber hose about 2 inches and feed the metal line through the middle, which will protect it from rubbing.
Yes, I’m sure they’re multiple ways of doing it. This was just one.
Growing up with my dad being an aircraft mechanic it was never allowed to have metal on metal, especially on fuel items and vibrations. The the solution he used was having a section of the braded fuel hose that would slide over the metal fuel line tightly and then have them both go through the breast plate tin through the gromet. There probably some modification to the tin to enlarge so it would all fit tight and nicely. Yes, kind of redundant, but I guess, that was the aircraft way back in the day. LOL, Boeing should learn, LOL. He never had a fire on his 64 or oil leaks. Thanks for the video.

Great tip; as long as the hole is large enough and wide (meaning no sharp edges like on the front engine tin that can cut) you should be home free. About clamps the ones recommended are not the “endless” type but the fixed type. They say the endless can bite into the hoses if over tightened.
Oh yeah, I don’t like those clamps. I really didn’t know how to refer to them. The endless clamps is a good way of putting it. They will cut right inside of a hose.

Important and timely info! I had my motor out last year and cleaned and painted the tins while it was out. I will check to see if there is a grommet in the breast plate. If not, I like the modification that you covered today. Never knew this was an issue. I do carry an extinguisher JIC!

Slade, I read that article and I have to say I never heard of it either but definitely going to do it on my beetle. Alcohol in fuel, Quick story about that. I went to Virginia in my motorhome for vacation and I filled up 10 miles before I git to my camping area. 60 gallons of gas. Not very far down the road it started running really bad, running lean. I figured I had a clogged fuel filter but I only had a few miles to go so got to the camping area and got the trailer off with my old Jeep in it and waited for things to cool down. This was a military vehicle rally so a lot of motorheads there. I climbed under the RV and found the filter in the most impossible spot between the cargo bins and the frame. These are 12" lines on this thing so when I got the filter off I got a bath in the process of getting the new one on. Right away I knew something was wrong because the gas was burning my arm. One of the other guys that owns a shop not far from there came over and said "I smell alcohol". Right away it dawned on me about just filling up so we got a sample and ran to his shop where he tested for alcohol. 22% alcohol!!!!!!! This was 60 gallons added to the 20 left in an 80 gallon tank so what came out of the pump was even higher! I had to drive back to new Jersey on that crap and I can tell you that a carbureted 454 does not run well on alcohol. I was flat on the floor for 6 hours and actually warped both exhaust manifolds from the heat. Yes, you are right on point suspecting more than advertised alcohol.
Wow!!!!! oh a big block Chevy would not like that very much. And I have said this for years. When I’m standing at the pump, it will say 10%, I’ve always said there’s probably 30%. Everybody would look at me like I was an idiot. And said they would not be able to put it on the sticker. Yeah sure lol I don’t trust nothing. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
Yes ----- I saw that article on page 14 of the latest VW Trends magazine ----- Thank you for bringing that point out about potential fire hazard ------ There probably should have been a -- Recall -- on it ------ after time passed by Volks Wagen discovering this flaw ---- and as you said ---- when you brought your car in for service -- it was just done as a precaution in preventing a fire ----- Hope you have a Good Day as well ---- Rodney

Open up the hole and it’ll reduce the rubbing. Some rubber hose over the solid line will be better than the bushing.

Yes
Yep, the metal of the shroud will saw through the fuel hose over time due to the movement of the engine vibrating in use. Rubber helps reduce the effect of vibration but it hardens, shrinks and can crack eventually.
Thank you for this, useful. I'd be skeptical in need of another layer between the 2 metals (line and tubed screw). The filing of the edges needs to be done carefully to not leave it rough, maybe polished in finer grit too; i wouldn't want that rubbing on my line if not smooth rounded edges.
Yes, I agree! Mine was actually very smooth. But I was concerned that others may not be so I showed you a file. And I did say make sure you polish it when done. I agree for safety reasons, of course.

Took mine out and ran a soft line from the chassis line exit to the filter. I have a pair of WDG clamps supporting the line and the filter on the left most outer edge of the firewall (away from the cylinders) as well as my fuel pressure regulator.
Outstanding! We can never be too safe that’s for sure. I see a lot of folks running regulators now even on stock set ups. I think because the fuel pumps are putting up more pressure than years ago.

Stopped using rubber fuel lines years ago, only use PTFE hose and AN fittings best way to go, but pricey ;)

That fire suppression system seems like a bargain at 250 dollars.
As far as the fuel line mod you showed would it make sense to silicone inside the insert to hold the fuel line in place?

I'm hoping to get another stock beetle soon. The baja eliminates some of these types of issues and has been fun but I prefer the stock body of the beetle.
Honestly, some people have said $250 is too much. But honestly our cars are worth so much more. I’m definitely putting one on the current project I’m doing. Oh yes Baja, you don’t deal with a lot of stuff the others do.
My 69 Squareback has the fuel line (hose) routed thru the breast plate. I’ll add a grommet.
Just make sure it’s safe, a grommet, or the fitting like I did.

Slade, you could get an ethanol testing kit to actually test the content of the fuel if you'd like to truly know :) You can never go wrong swapped to AN fittings and braided or stainless line!
I wanted to go with stainless steel, I’ve been thinking about that while I have everything apart. I would like to test some of the ethanol near my house, I have a feeling it’s much higher than what the sticker on the pump says.
@@SladesVWBeetle I think you should absolutely do the ethanol test and record it. I think it would make an interesting video, especially if you include the science around how the test works and all that. Stainless steel + AN fittings definitely instills extra positivity.
@@WestGeorgiaAirCooled I have never done that before, I’ll have to see who sells them near me or online. I’m not really good with chemistry stuff, but I’ll do a little research, and then go get some fuel at a couple different stations in the near future and try it. I think that’s a good idea.
@@SladesVWBeetle if you’d like to include the “knowledge behind how it works” or an explanation, I’m not sure if I can do a better job, but I’d love to make a little clip of “this is how the test works” for you if you wanted! I’m sure we could get some tests pretty cheap on Amazon.

Well it’s the 1/4 hose that everyone tries to use instead of the proper metric hose.
I believe the size I have been using is 5.5 MM.
