Every day age discrimination happens behind closed doors. We wanted to see what it would look like if we brought it out into the open. So, we set up a social experiment with the help of a food truck. We disguised an actress as an employee and refused to serve anyone over 40. Watch our hidden cameras and tell us how you would react in the comments below. #DisruptAging

Job hunting last year at 51 was so rough. I ended up getting hired at an Amazon warehouse where they’ll hire anyone that shows up and passes the drug test.
Excellent! I especially LOVE that guy with the afro who was the first to speak up, and motivated his friends to do the same and walk away.
I'm soon turning 44, looking for a job and... this is my life right now. And has been since I turned 39 anytime I was between jobs. Sick, sad world.
So, you were turning 40 right around when this was uploaded!
Me too.
The young are cheaper seems to be the general idea among employers.
@@funch357 I heard of a Company that fired or laid off all their older employees and hired only fresh employees. Within 6 months the company went bankrupt because they could not repair or operate their equipment any longer. They letgo everyone that could use and fix it while the companies that made the equipment no longer provided services or had closed their doors years prior.
Its a sad world when Employers think that the young are smarter than the old.
Just wait until you’re over 50
I know someone 55, looking for a job, who was told, "A person your age might not want to learn our way of doing things. Plus, the younger people who work here dont want an older person coming and and TAKING THEIR HOURS". Can you imagine if that were said about women or a person of color? But this was said about a qualified 55 year old
Thank you AARP. Age discrimination IS real and it really hurts everyone everyday.
I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not. AARP lobbies for age discrimination. That’s most of what they do.
A lot of age discrimnation is practiced nonverbally. Negative attitudes are well cultivated.
its on shop walls and doors before you enter even
Nonverbal is like forming cliques and ignoring you.
It's definitely hard to prove!
I’m 65, ride a bike to work a mile away, I feel young and active, I also go swimming at the gym for fun. Walk everyday at least two miles. But, yet, I am not included in simple conversation at work where the others are young. It doesn’t feel very good.
Usually it helps to find common grounds or similar interests. GenZ is also very different and jaded most of the time so socializing is small or online
Maybe you should initiate more often, if you don’t? They might be just as fearful of you discriminating them based on age as you are of them. I’ve been in some circles of young people who thought the older person didn’t like them just because they were young and so they continued conversations without the older person. Had that older person been friendlier, they would’ve included them. I see mixed-age groups getting along more often than I don’t.
Well yeah, that’s how life works. I worked with old dudes and they treated me like a child. It’s not “discrimination” you’re just not in the right enviroment.
I work in technology, and the age discrimination is rampant. My solution was to start my own business when I was “laid off” (in spite of superior performance reviews) when I was 42. I was then quietly replaced with someone younger and cheaper. However, self-employment is not an option for everyone since it requires you have the character for it.
I've found being younger has a negative stigma too. When im bored with server side work or lack there of and help out our help desk team going to people for troubleshooting people assume I dont know anything since im 22 and look a bit younger than that. Slowly ive gotten people over that as they see me work though, so atleast its not hard set
Nobody cares. I got pushed out of my career at 57 and never found a job after that. College degree,30 years experience Icu,ed,nicu,ob,trauma, sub acute, trauma rehab.
Nearly 1 in 4 workers age 45 and older have been subjected to negative comments about their age from supervisors or coworkers.
About 3 in 5 older workers have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace.
76 percent of these older workers see age discrimination as a hurdle to finding a new job; another report found that more than half of these older workers are prematurely pushed out of longtime jobs and 90 percent of them never earn as much again.
GUITARLIGHTHOUSE I am lucky. I am 46 and have yet to experience age discrimination at work or otherwise. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen as I am looking for different work.
more people are living to 100. middleaged should create new workspaces for their generations.
Guitar Lighthouse way back in 1988 a good friend of mine who moved back to Manhattan said a lot of places didn't want to hire anyone once they turn 40 ... I remember thinking well I have a pretty long time before that happens .
40 is not even old ...bit's terrible what's happening to good experienced workers and professionals .
One administrative jerk referred to me as "an older woman" who was too opinionated, I was 32.
Who would thumb this down? Theres plenty of age discrimination out there. Its actually ruining a lot of peoples lives... destroying people. They cant get a job, and then they are mocked for not working or being a burden on society. Its sickening.
+lambchopxoxo it works in reverse, and has worked in reverse for the last 35 yrs. You know what its like needing a raise and having hr tell you to your face that 40 is the new 30 while they cut your staff just to pocket it so they can buy bigger suvs? i'm not saying that any discrimination is right, but for people that have benefited from discrimination to whine now its their turn to be discriminated against, its just pathetic, really. I could use the same "we didn't start the fire" excuse the boomers always use right here.
+gisforgary - 40 years old is not a baby boomer, you goof.
@@Gee-xb7rt Guess what?
You're 4 years older now.
You're not immune.
@@ratusbagus Exactly. These people speaking like they're above it. If you don't die guess what? You get older! There's no stopping it. Father Time DOES NOT discriminate. If they don't die they'll experience it too. It's not fun. All we can do is embrace our age and give double deuces to anyone who has a problem with it.
Age discrimination also destroys our country. If you have a work force that's based on negative practices, guess what kind of results you get? Just look at the economy and the ways big companies and their hiring practices have effected efficiency, growth and ultimately profits.
It's nice to see even one person speak out. Bless those few!
My dad could never get stable work again after we moved away from his 25 year job in the local council. And none of the work he got matched his experience.
He was starting from rung 0 on the ladder again in his 50s despite looking younger and being fitter than some of his coworkers in their 30s.
My mum was able to get another job easily. But then she was left disabled through medical negligence and he had to become her full time carer.
If anything happens to her or their marriage, he would have to start again in his 60s.
I'm concerned about myself, too, because I'm 32 and still in education.
YAY!!!! I love this video SOOOOO much. We are the ROCK generation (NOT THE ROCKER GENERATION, PEOPLE!) We simply can NOT sit back and allow ageism to continue. So many other communities and special interest groups have fought for their rights, their voice, their PLACE in our society. The time has come for OUR community to do likewise. SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT! Whether it's in the workplace, the doctor's office, taking to social media and calling out companies that target our spending dollars by ATTEMPTING TO EXPLOIT our age to get us to buy their products, or DEVALUE us by using stereotypes about us to boost their ratings or sales, CALL THEM OUT! Yes, I am passionate about this issue, and the time for ageism's demise has arrived. I just spoke of this issue on my channel this past week, to help draw attention to it. Also, if you see a positive article or video, post it to your social media so others can begin to hear the message we WANT them to hear. Great job, AARP! LOVE this. Peace! ~Toni 😊💋💚🌺😇
And here I thought Gen Z was the weak generation..
If that experiment was done now society would love it
I’m 73 and when I use a cane because of arthritis I get approached by people asking for money. I had to stop using a cane because I felt like I was being targeted for robbery.
I'd whack them in the shins with your cane :)
@@georgejetson9801Much as I agree, they would then may consider to press charges or retaliate the same, oof!
That's very bad!!! Wow! It's like....I don't even know what to think. 40 is still young. How can society think that it's not young. Wow!!!
I know right?
The world moves faster than it used to
This is exactly how it like in the workplace, they just hide it be and say not a good fit.
This happens in the workplace way too a lot and I'm sick of that crap too! And I'm under 40 but I am closely approaching it (36)! Give me a break people, you'll get there too!.. If yall are LUCKY enough to survive this thing called life!
You'd think that with the demographic changes that mean fewer young people in general, age discrimination would start to abate. So far I don't see it, except in fast food places and retail -- the lowest paying, few benefits workplaces there are.
If I was a humanitarian, for example, my fictional company would only hire someone in their 40’s. My mom was a brilliant lady, with only a high school diploma, she raised me and my sister. At age 50, mom got a grant for truck driving. She had her own truck, made great memories, met her 2 husband then she lived until she was 70 years old. Older people have life experience with patience, joy, happiness, now that’s success to me.
I'm 54 n been a truck driver for 28 years. Couple months ago I was pushed out so a man 10 years younger could take my job. I just found another job which took 2 months and doesn't pay nearly what I was before .
THIS IS OFFENSIVE!! I’m 32 and this doesn’t really feel right...
Young people get discriminated when they go out to find a job, older people think they lack experience and skills.
I see it happening all the time. It's legal
I passed for 35 all the time even though I 57 so…
You should thank god I wasn’t there!
I’m 37 but I loathe Ageism to the point that I get so angry when I see someone ageist! Stay away from me
I'm 57. If I'm in better shape than most 30 year olds. If I came across this, they would have needed to bring me down with a tranquilizer dart! Well done!
Funny thing is, the workplace age discrimination is perpetrated by the people in the same age group.
Thats how the 20s and 30s treated me at the club in my mid 40s. Like I was inferior.
where are the 90´s generation clubs ?
@@hjillumi880 there are none. Unless you’re already married, you’re alone.

They should’ve also done a “no customers under 18” or something like that to raise awareness about the other side of it.

I think you missed the point the video was trying to illustrate. And in doing so, demonstrated why 'young' age discrimination happens due to their lack of cognitive abilities more than JUST the age factor.
@@cuivre2004 I really don’t think I did, my suggestion is exactly the same as this current video but with “under 18” instead of “over 40”. Cognitive abilities aren’t uniform across everyone, and not all lower-age-limit rules are put in place because of cognitive ability. Plus, if you want to talk about cognitive ability, why don’t we talk about old people with dementia?
I'm 56 and most of my family and friends about my age are dead.
It's difficult to make new friends because people my age aren't looking for more friends, and younger people, well, they're not interested in hanging out with older people. I understand that.
So,...I'm alone all the time.
So am I at 52
I am in my 40s and would love older friends but don’t know how to meet them! I used to try to talk to people but gave up, they always act like I must be a crazy person for being friendly
Although meant for age discrimination it is a great video to amplify how degrading it feels to be denied service based on who you are. So next time someone says a gay person should simply go to a different service provider when denied service remember this video and how upsetting and humiliating it must feel to be treated less than for who you are. Discrimination for anyone is wrong and should not be tolerated.
I agree that no one should be discriminated against.....period. This video is about people who HAVE NO CHOICE in the natural process of aging....not about their sexual PREFERENCE....
i had that all the time when i was younger
I prefer the thing your trying to say then what they are trying to say because young people aren't giving jobs because the lack of age or experience
Rafael Acevedo SAME goes for AGE; RACE; SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND AGE. black people are treated the same way...... as everyone I just mentioned.
True

As a 68 year old with a college degree and 20 years experience, and looking for over a year for a job after being "let go", I can tell you age discrimination in employment is alive and well. It's open and blatant. It's the last ACCEPTABLE prejudice. So--why aren't all the "woke" crusaders out there doing something about THIS?
I'm 44 and don't think I'm old
I'd be offended by this
Hell ya, sick of getting shit for being 22 in IT. In private and public sector work people assume I dont know my shit. Sucks walking in and instantly getting a stigma when im just doing help desk tickets since im bored waiting for server side tickets to come in. They barely know what google is but think I know less somehow, ofcourse till they see me work. Thats how it usually goes
I guess I'd be hungry that day...
I felt upset by this Its like people have no place when they get older if we got rid of older people everyone would be an orphan.....
It’s a bunch of nonsense. This has never happened. It almost seems satirical how ridiculous this video is.
I'm 85 and feel invisible, like everybody hates me. Thing is, I hate most young people, they just turn me off.
That’s all very interesting Mr. Powers
you guys might wanna be shocked to hear that in other countries (Switzerland specifically), employers are openly stating an age limit in their employment ads. ´looking for receptionist under 30 ´. not kidding.
How about no one under 40💁🏽♀️. This made me tear up 🥺. Cheers 😉🌷
Let's face it, the accepted form of discrimination. Those who champion gender and racial equality are more likely to let this form of discrimination slide. They don't purposely do it but it flies under their radar. Plenty of studies and papers on this.
well we live in a youth ful society. and its not getting better.
Can't watch it yet.. can someone please tell me if they informed the old people plus rewarded them or something after?
That's a great question or did they just walk away?
The people over 40 has the money. Thats absurd.
Now only if they would serve people only if they are over 40, because ageism is a problem that can go both ways.
How so? Examples? Personal experience?
@@funch357 man, it was a comment from two years ago. I've separated myself from such arguments now. My advice? You do the same.
Definitely a risky experiment because if I would happen to have already had a bad day and somehow gone out of my way over to this truck because I’m extremely hungry that little chalkboard sign would be laying in splinters on the sidewalk and that little girl would be running away in tears after the verbal lashing she would receive, and that’s the very least that would happen. I’m a 61 year old veteran and some days I just don’t have a sense of humor.
She is not a "little girl." She is a woman. Do not call something it is not in order to try to make your point.

Yikes. This isn't really even fun to watch it just feels like its putting people down.
This demonstration is something they should do on that TV show where actors pretend to express bigoted views in a public place until someone calls them out on it. Sort of a Candid Camera for the woke.

I was 51 and looking for a job where I had an interview with a woman who was in her late 20s. She asked me if I would be comfortable working with a young staff. The stress in her voice and tone made it clear that I was too old and her eyes. I didn't get the job. I latter interviewed with a major corporation where HR screener told me I was the most qualified person to be interviewed.. I was elated, and just knew I had a job, but when I went in for the interview, I was told that they were looking for someone with a different ethnic background (I'm white). I didn't get that job either.
The reality is that the younger generation will get older and they are teaching people younger than themselves to be ageist. This will bite them back hard.

Why isn't this on TV in every market possible!? I know it costs $$ to advertise, but I'd donate $$ to help it get exposure. It could also be distributed as a public service announcement & sent to TV and cable newsrooms across the nation. I know it takes time & $$ to do so, but that's what AARP SHOULD do! Because it's not, that's a major reason I don't join. It's no longer the political lobbying, advocacy, general public education powerhouse it was. AARP was once just as powerful as the NRA! What happened? AARP, return to earlier days of placing ADVOCACY at the top of your priorities list. Today's AARP has gotten too soft. Be a more disruptive organization -- protests, boycotts, major public lawsuits etc. THAT'S how you help older persons!

I'm 13. I wish people would realise the age discrimination my age group has been through. No one really considers that when they talk about ageism. It's always about the older people.
Really...??? wow
This SpaghettiDude It doesn't really offend me. I just pretend to be older so people take me seriously.
Start a channel to lend your voice to YOUR generation's views and experiences. AARP is specifically for the mature community, but it doesn't mean that other forms of ageism are out there.
PittsburghPenguinsFan30 age discrimination happens to every age group. Some places like bars, adult video stores, and even gentlemen's clubs are strictly for adults only.
yeah, there is ageing against your age group, adults think you're stupid, when in fact you are just ignorant and naive
The 37 dislikers are ageist.
No, don't presume why the dislike is given.
Age discrimination is unacceptable. It is stupid and it is wrong. In some places, if the attorney general catches you do it, you can be fined pretty severely.
It's interesting how White elderly folks complain about experiencing ageism. Now they understand that prejudice isn't a myth. Now they understand what we ethnic minority groups have gone through all our lives, even when we were younger.
In these times, she probably would never dare discriminate against a black person because of the fear of an immediate protest that would bring attention to her establishment which would become television news.
Right. Having grown up in a 90% latino/black environment, I have experienced racism for my entire life. I have been told by teachers that some classes or events were "Latino only" and I was not allowed to enter or participate. Same is true of being female. I have been discriminated against my entire life for not being male. People assume I am slow, stupid or just simply a vapid mess if I am not male. Now, I can't even get a decent job because I am over 40. So, bullshit. I know exactly what it is like to be discriminated against for my entire life. Everything about me has been wrong, so I guess I should be used to it by now, eh? So, go cry somewhere else about your personal brand of discrimination.
Yeah, eventually even they come to realize that discrimination is enraging, demeaning, and real. But let's not divide ourselves with labels like "older people rights" and "minority rights" and "women's rights", while the rulers of this land sit back and enjoy the show. It's all about HUMAN RIGHTS.
Those white women have been experiencing it, too. Let's be fair.
@@geekay2747 And it gets worse as a woman. As we get older if we're not cooing in defense of a young person, we're just "old bitches!" if we dare advocate for ourselves. SAME words could be coming out of our mouths if you take 20 yrs off our age and we'd have a rally of support. SAME words with 20 years added "OMG it's like my MOM is bitching at me!"
By the way. I'm half Mexican. But I grew up a military brat where all the kids were forward thinking. It was an unrealistic atmosphere. When I went out into the world, I was in for a shock. Called "honey" by men, eyes rolled at when I state my ideas. Passed over for raises. FINALLY, over 40 I'm finding the first people in my entire life who are automatically respectful to me are middle-aged Mexican women in service jobs. I politely ask for something, they say in a I-got-you! look, "Right away, mami." The first time it happened, I walked out to my car and almost cried because I've been noticing before that the younger Mexican women were beginning to treat me with disdain like their mom just walked in. I'm no one's mom but I get all the shit as if I was.
And the SHITTIEST thing? All these new young people with their new ideals about championing for everyone's rights while still being hostile to older people... They will be older one day and will have a sudden STROKE of GENIUS that they deserve rights as older people and HOW DARE they be discriminated against. And there will be a whole movement about that in 20 yrs. ... While they will be shit to us as elderly people. Another 20yrs, a whole new march for ELDERLY RIGHTS!
If you have nothing to do then do this,,
Actually I'm hearing, at where I'm living, that many employers prefer older workers because the kids these days are unreliable, just won't show up to work, won't work then they do show up, are on their phones constantly, are entitled, etc. Starting to get harder for young people to find work because they have such a bad reputation
Yeah. One millenial female pizza cafe owner always preferred workers in their 20s. And always complained how unreliable they are. But still hired only young ones, one after another. For months and months. Finally, at last, desperately she finally agreed to take a 50 yo woman. It worked perfectly.
Hearing it's happening isn't the same as seeing it happen.
Serves my generation right, except for the ones that are actually good works
See that's why people become ageist, when old people like to tsk at young people. You wonder why you're discriminated against? You're doing the same thing to younger people!
So, I'm in my 20's. Could I buy one of those over 40's condo's? No?
You know tons of us are poor too right? I’m really poor, all my life and I’m 45
Social experiment or not , age discrimination is against the law. These people disgust me.
Ironically most younger people are all for equality and antiracism, yet practice and thus enforce ageism without the slightest quota of self awareness.
We learned that from the generation before us
@Furware you're responsible for your own development and blaming others is childish
Well get over it. Many older people I came across were just as ageist, racist, sexist and discriminatory as some young ones whether in work places or everyday life. Most older men in the dating world prefer those who are very young so hey, you get back what you put out..lol

Don’t try the trucking industry it’s really rampant there. I’m sure it’s in a lot of places. I just wish the world would come clean and speak the truth. If you don’t really need truck drivers, say so.
This turned out to be a long comment, but really...in the trucking industry also? That's actually something I'm considering at age 37. I've been an equipment operator in the logging industry since 2014. But honestly I hate running equipment because I prefer being physically active, and the labor jobs in logging I used to do are mostly gone and replaced by machines now. Having said that, I don't really WANT to drive truck...but I'm having really bad luck getting a simple labor job right now. Also I'm single with no family so I figured maybe I could save money driving OTR.
I've applied for a bunch of entry level construction, plumbing, sawmills, and other types of jobs but none of them have showed any interest in me at all. A few of them sent me emails back the very next day after applying saying they had chosen someone else or whatever. I'm still in shape and fully capable of full time labor jobs. Even though I don't think 37 is all that old, I don't know if they aren't considering me due to age, lack of experience, or if they think I'm gonna be asking for too much money or something? You got me, but it's been really pissing me off.
So I've been considering trucking because I didn't think age would be a problem there. I still have the logging job, but I'm completely burned out on that after I've spent many years doing long commutes and sometimes camping. There's no way around the commuting with logging, and there's always some bullshit that comes up to delay you from getting home in a timely fashion. With trucking you can drive your maximum daily hours and park, and even with no home time, seems better than working 10 hours and commuting for an additional 4 to 5 hours daily like I've been doing.
“Age discrimination” 😂😂😂 laughable
By the Lord Harry. How daft can you get. If they don't want to serve anyone over 40, good luck to them. They simply cut themselves off from all their over 40 potential customers. Its a free country. If someone does not want to tap into my 77 years of experience, (or my money) tough luck them.
