Oatmeal is definitely one of those dishes that are just a blank canvas with endless possibilities. I like throwing in some pumpkin, pumpkin spice, and brown sugar. Tastes and feels like pumpkin pie.
I feel like, even if you can't afford a lot of ingredients, the key to good oatmeal is having a good balance of sweet and salty. I usually only can afford to buy a little bit of fruit as a topping, but then make sure the oatmeal is seasoned with a bit of butter, a pinch of salt, and a little sugar. It sounds simple, but *the pinch of salt is a must for oatmeal that doesn't taste like cardboard.*
I do just sweet and it's great altho I prefer overnight oats. So I feel like I'm having dessert for breakfast I usually add fruits or nut butter or nuttella..
The happy medium is doing a lot of the prep the night before and letting the oats soak overnight. Give them a quick cook on the stove with some added milk (or half and half if you want it creamy like you used only milk and no water) and you're good to go in the morning. Top with the yogurt and berries from the fridge in 30 seconds. Or if you're like me, skip the oats entirely because you have a desk job and don't need the extra calories and are better served by yogurt and eggs.
Also *savory oatmeal!* Oats work really well with savory flavors. I like to make mine with broth instead of water, add a bit of hot sauce or sriracha and top with an egg. But I’ve made it with freshly grated parm, toasted pine nuts, and a bit of olive oil, have made it with soy sauce, have used leftover French onion soup, and more.

In South Asian countries, savoury Oatmeal is more common than the sweet oatmeal. The ingredients are very simple . Use the ingredients you would use to make a soup and cook the oats in the broth/ soup base. That's it.
In Japan they'll use leftover broth from hotpot (leftovers of meats and veggies also welcome) to make ojiya or zosui. Just heat it up, add one or two raw eggs, and leave to boil for a minute without stirring. Then add a bit of cooked rice and stir everything until rice falls apart. The amount of eggs and rice is to your taste. More eggs will make it thicker and lessen savory and spicy tastes. But rice will absorb the moisture over time, especially if you leave it for a few hours. Adding a lot will turn it into oatmeal. So add little rice if you prefer more soupy texture. I guess you can do the same with oatmeal instead of rice. It'll probably have to be cooked a bit longer though. Maybe like 3-5 minutes.
That sounds really weird cause I'm not used to it. But I will definitely try it! I'm just coming down with a cold so it's the perfect time to give it a try. I'm thinking about adding chicken, carrots and onions, parsley and carrot green.

I add them to boiling water with pieces of apples, later when almost done add chia seeds and when done - banana if I have it, honey and a bit of ghee butter. Fun fact: this method also works with risotto! When slowly adding liquid to a grain, letting it cook out and evaporate and repeating, it results in a muuuuuuch creamier and silkier dish (I can’t exactly explain the science behind it but trust me I’m a chef and I make silky risottos lols) Also warming up the liquid beforehand usually makes the cooking process a little smoother or more seamless
I've always been an 'old-fashioned oats' girl, but I prefer to grind the oats a bit before cooking them and use a bit more of liquid. I only season them with brown sugar and cinnamon, or vanilla, berries and nuts if I'm feeling fancy. But I shall try your version of them next time!

instead of brown sugar and orange zest I added honey and vanilla and it tastes soooo good the spices toasted with the oat bring the best flavor ever thank youu
Okay but here’s how to make my current favorite oatmeal: Depending on how big of a portion you want add your desired amount of oats to a bowl (or a pot). Pour the double amount of oatmilk into the same bowl/pot and add as many cut up apples as your heart desires. Give it a couple of minutes in the microwave (or cook it on the stove) until it reaches a thick texture. When it’s done you can add some skyr or greek yogurt on top for a bit sourness to the sweet oatmeal (trust me it’s delicious) and there you have your oatmilk apple oatmeal. It’s very filling and It’s a delicious mix between sweet and sour great for someone with a sweet tooth like myself!
I have not eaten a bowl of oatmeal in a while since I now make oatmeal pancakes with apples , blueberries, strawberries and walnuts in them. They are also good cold with almond butter on them ‼️👍 And I make a double or triple batch. Put them the toaster the next day ❗
I love to make oatmeal with almond milk, honey, cinnamon, a pinch of salt, a banana and a kiwi. I make it very smooth and bit liquid. I top it off with desiccated coconut, nut butter, sometimes chia seeds. I also like to I add cocoa powder to the pot or chunks of chocolate to the bowl, it tastes amazing. I usually keep a few pieces of the fruits to have a more colorful topping 😊
I steep dried cherries or cranberries in the milk as I warm it on the stove along with a handful of chopped nuts. Then add the oats, cinnamon, pinch of salt, flax powder, & chia seeds or protein powder. At the end I add a bit of honey to adjust for sweetness & top with a banana or granola so the soft texture doesn't get monotonous. It's so good 🙂
My favorite oatmeal is to just add either pb2 powder, cocoa powder (or just the chocolate pb2), honey, and banana. And I don’t cook it, I just microwave about 1/2 cup oats with 3/4-1 cup water for 1:30
This doesnt seem like it would take a long time? You’re just boiling the oats. Adding spices is not time consuming. What is faster than this except cold cereal? Toast?
As someone who grew up eating oatmeal porridge (I refuse to call it just oatmeal) 2 times a day, I can say that when you add a pinch of salt and some sugar and butter to the microwaved construction porridge it makes for a good, tasty, quick breakfast for a low price. Then on weekends you can go crazy and make the stove cooked one
Personally found soaking the oats for 5 or more minutes in some hot water before cooking on the hob. I add more hot water and cook; near the end add a bit of plant milk and warm it through till you get the right consistency.
Tbh I kinda like the first version as well though. ..it just tastes comforting esp during cold seasons , with lots of cinamon and it makes the perfect breakfast comfort meal.....(for me atleast)...
My favorite is to add slightly roasted apple slices and chopped nuts, a tablespoon of peanut butter and a nice splash of maple syrup on top. I also do the oatmeal as you showed with oatmilk and cinnamon. It is soo sweet and delicious :)
If you’re on a weight loss journey (like me) and want something like this daily without the brown sugar and more pound reducing friendly, I got you (I’ve lost 60 lbs and toned up using this recipe): 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, tsp chia seeds, 2 tbsp organic maple syrup, seasonings of choice, 1 serving of collagen powder (don’t get the super expensive stuff, go to the healthy baking aisle, the $11 bag did way more for me than the $60 scam tubs) fruit and nut of choice (my fave is walnuts and strawberries, or stewed apples in the maple syrup and cinnamon if it’s fall, but if I’m adding sugar free chocolate chips to mine, or doing a fall recipe I’ll add pistachios/pecans cause why not) If you’re making on the stove, about 1/2 cup boiling water. If you have an electric kettle, add some boiling water (about 1/2 cup) and stir, then microwave for about 30 seconds to reach desired consistency and enjoy the daily energy. (If you think carbs are bad for weight-loss, you’re weird. Bodies need carbs to survive.)
I don't know why people don't like oatmeal. My secret to good oatmeal ever since I was a kid was adding more water(to have better consistency), mixing in sugar and powdered milk, then topping it off with some Milo. I occasionally put in some chopped bananas or mango to add more flavor.

Fun fact: this method also works with risotto! When slowly adding liquid to a grain, letting it cook out and evaporate and repeating, it results in a muuuuuuch creamier and silkier dish (I can’t exactly explain the science behind it but trust me I’m a chef and I make silky risottos lols)
Also warming up the liquid beforehand usually makes the cooking process a little smoother or more seamless
I can confirm, I made that face when I ate it
I've always been an 'old-fashioned oats' girl, but I prefer to grind the oats a bit before cooking them and use a bit more of liquid. I only season them with brown sugar and cinnamon, or vanilla, berries and nuts if I'm feeling fancy. But I shall try your version of them next time!
That actually looks good i not gonna cap and I love oatmeal so
Toasting is key. It removes the stickiness
I never knew this. Thank you!

Love the mushy oatmeals, the first one is almost perfect for me
Fana one of my favorite artist and I love how you end the interview with the song that they choose. Great Work!!
I'm from Yemen and we have a traditional meal name 'arikah' it's similar to this and its very delicious we usually eat it for breakfast.
By the way you haven't done any video about Yemeni dishes
And i recommend (Arikah and mindy)
one of my personal favorites is to stir in a nice big, generous, loving amount of peanut butter(of course if you don't have allergies).
Pb&J oats is sooooo good
Is it just me or does he have shaders. Like the lighting is on the next level
Bro created the commercial food 💀☠️💀
instead of brown sugar and orange zest I added honey and vanilla and it tastes soooo good the spices toasted with the oat bring the best flavor ever thank youu
Nice! I only use the microwave because I can make a bowl in 90secs, add some peanut butter and chocolate chips or brown sugar and call it a day.
more oat meal recipes please.
I love this! Tried it today and the hubby loved it.
Also, it helps to let it be thinner when boiling. By the time it cools, it thickens a lot.
Okay but here’s how to make my current favorite oatmeal:
Depending on how big of a portion you want add your desired amount of oats to a bowl (or a pot).
The toasted spices went airborne! 🤧
I have not eaten a bowl of oatmeal in a while since I now make oatmeal pancakes with apples , blueberries, strawberries and walnuts in them. They are also good cold with almond butter on them ‼️👍
And I make a double or triple batch. Put them the toaster the next day ❗
I always add peanut butter to mine for some tasty protein, and if I'm being cheeky then some dark chocolate chips too!
Me: puts oats from a packet into a bowl, then adds milk and if I'm feeling fancy, then I'll add blueberries
It's so good 🙂
I think maple syrup works even better than honey.
My favorite oatmeal is to just add either pb2 powder, cocoa powder (or just the chocolate pb2), honey, and banana. And I don’t cook it, I just microwave about 1/2 cup oats with 3/4-1 cup water for 1:30
Microwaved oatmeal meal is never as good as stove top. You don’t have to cook it as slowly as he did.
I like the blank oatmeal
Please do a savoury version of oats! I think you will like them. Maybe even make one with beans.
Dude it's a fricking breakfast I don't have all the timen in the world. This is made to make fastly imagine doing this every morning.
Cook it the night before and reheat it in the morning. You can also pre-slice any add ins.
@@Appaddict01 thats better but still its not good
This doesnt seem like it would take a long time? You’re just boiling the oats. Adding spices is not time consuming. What is faster than this except cold cereal? Toast?
@@---pu7ke Ok try it out and then send to me how long it took you to make it.
So you make oatmeal look palatable by hiding it completely. I should try that.
This dish will give you an oatgasam
As someone who grew up eating oatmeal porridge (I refuse to call it just oatmeal) 2 times a day, I can say that when you add a pinch of salt and some sugar and butter to the microwaved construction porridge it makes for a good, tasty, quick breakfast for a low price. Then on weekends you can go crazy and make the stove cooked one
I’ve made this three times already and it’s absolutely delicious. 10/10 totally has changed oatmeal for me.
NON BOILED oats are much healthier, so if you care about health, go for overnight options!
I just throw them in a tropical fruityoghurt (1:3) ratio and eat them within 5 minutes.
1.2 oatmeal, Kirby is such a pink guy.
The oats being cooked in their blended brothers and sisters
Meanwhile, I'm a simple guy. I cook my mushy oats, add some honey and enjoy them 😂
Aint nobody got time for that😭. I have 10 mins for breakfast in the morning lmaoo
Personally found soaking the oats for 5 or more minutes in some hot water before cooking on the hob. I add more hot water
and cook; near the end add a bit of plant milk and warm it through till you get the right consistency.
If you’re on a weight loss journey (like me) and want something like this daily without the brown sugar and more pound reducing friendly, I got you (I’ve lost 60 lbs and toned up using this recipe): 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, tsp chia seeds, 2 tbsp organic maple syrup, seasonings of choice, 1 serving of collagen powder (don’t get the super expensive stuff, go to the healthy baking aisle, the $11 bag did way more for me than the $60 scam tubs) fruit and nut of choice (my fave is walnuts and strawberries, or stewed apples in the maple syrup and cinnamon if it’s fall, but if I’m adding sugar free chocolate chips to mine, or doing a fall recipe I’ll add pistachios/pecans cause why not)
If you’re making on the stove, about 1/2 cup boiling water. If you have an electric kettle, add some boiling water (about 1/2 cup) and stir, then microwave for about 30 seconds to reach desired consistency and enjoy the daily energy.
(If you think carbs are bad for weight-loss, you’re weird. Bodies need carbs to survive.)
I just made this and it was SO GOOD thank you kevin!!!!
I don't know why people don't like oatmeal. My secret to good oatmeal ever since I was a kid was adding more water(to have better consistency), mixing in sugar and powdered milk, then topping it off with some Milo. I occasionally put in some chopped bananas or mango to add more flavor.
Yes that’s what I do sometimes except without fruit. But milo oatmeal is great
I forget- which one makes the oatmeal mushier/slimier? I actually like it better when it’s denser and not slimy- which I assume is less water…?
Usually I eat oats without cooking. Am I a maniac of some sorts?
My son and I made some this morning. I cheered when we tasted it and praised him as the best chef ever! Thanks. ❤
You know it's good when it's as thick as a cinderblock and spoons stand upright
besides cinnamon and cardamom what are other spices that go well with oatmeal?
Oats are great. But lemon juice makes the oats with honey even better. You don't even need sugar. (Like if you tried it and loved it.)
Instead of adding surgar or honey you can add banana. It makes it sweet enough and is so good especially with cocoa and peanut butter
Toasting the oats is a game changer. Followed him on this one (I didn't put any garlic or garlic salt though) and got a delicious breakfast recipe! Thank you for making my day 😅
"Let's make it look good"
*slaps a whole ass parfait on top *
This is my 8th month of asking kwook to try traditional yemeni food- you should defined try fatah and saltah
