To sum it up. The problem with a ECOTI is it's limited to night time use. Additionally, if your NODs go out, your ECOTI is useless. A dedicated thermal is a 24/7 device and works even if you NODs do not. A dedicated thermal usually has a further detection range as well. Not to mention having the ability to hand a thermal someone else if the situation dictates.
For most people, a dedicated thermal will give them the most flexibility.
You can get an eyecup adapter for the coti to use as a handheld. Still pales in comparison to the L3 mtm unit.
To add to that.. Save up and get a good thermal. I have a FLIR LSX and I wish I would've gotten a better one.
It's good enough, but any lower quality that that would suck.

Pitch: a smartwatch screen reflected for a heads-up display transparent lens for one of the tubes. can see a compass, map, speech to text messages, all hands free. yall should work with an Android device or app developer to sort out the screen specs to display correctly.

According to your site the handheld is only available to LE and the military… The only other site I found it on had it listed at almost $12,000, and you were talking like it was cheaper than ECOTI?
The Insight MTM has been discontinued, but you can find them pretty regularly on the second hand market for $3,000-$3,500. Cheapest I’ve seen is $2,800, making it significantly cheaper than a AN/PAS-29B ECOTI.

FWIW networked warfighting gear sounds cool as fuck....until you realize it's emitting an electronic signature then it's a lot less cool for a multitude of reasons. That's just my opinion, and the opinion of many with whom I served.
The whole concept will be useless vs a near peer enemy, it's a day dream if you think they can run operations then like they did in Afghanistan , Iraq , or Syria.

Ah yes, the lack of IR discipline problem all over again. I wonder how long it took the military to realize that insurgents could use shitty camcorders to see their IR light show. Probably as long as itll take them to realize that every local nerd with a couple of SDRs can DF their constantly transmitting ATAK location pings.
