The materials used in the anode and cathode set the voltage, the electrolyte and surface area set the current. Carbon and Magnesium are about as good as you can get. Here is the Galvanic table - the voltage you get from your battery is the difference between the two numbers shown for the materials - graphite (carbon) 0.2 - Magnesium -1.6, so the voltage could be as much as -1.8v en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvani...

Great experiment.
The most surprising thing is how well my solar snowman is running on tap water. I had to get the de-ionised water as a comparison, to check what was going on.
Great stuff, it confirmed the thinking with practical tests. 1.2V isn't too far off the 1.7V, but I'd think amperage would only be about 3uA.
BTW, tried a pulse motor earlier with the same circuit, but 30AWG coil on a sewing bobbin - 43ohms compared to 500 of a rocker coil. Whole video went South because it only ran with vinegar. All those millions of ions and acid also ate the Mg fast! I wanted to join in lol
Brilliant 🤣🤣
To provide an even more convincing demonstration, you could rinse out the jug and the metal strips a few times with de-ionised water before starting the experiment. Any slight traces of washing up liquid or other contaminants from previous use or washing are enough to supply a few ions.
I did that.
There aren't many things you haven't tried to get the old ions going. 😅
Watching the different liquids, fruits, and vegetables you have used is very interesting.
God knows what else you have used to produce electricity. I was thinking blood.
That has to work. After all, we are living batteries.
Don't get me wrong. I was thinking of a nice raw steak. Although a random person might volunteer.
That would be exceptionally interesting. 🧛♂🤣🤣
Blood did cross my mind, need about half a pint to make a reasonable sized battery. Know anybody who wouldn't miss a little 🤣 Of course there are other bodily fluids too 💩. Then of course there are ideas like putting a slug between the two plates. On a slightly more politically correct line, I have just tried a couple of metal objects that were laying around, like aluminium and Nichrome. Neither worked, but it was worth a try. The aluminium did work briefly although that might have been because of the other residue already in the container.
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan Slug between two plates. 🤣🤣🤣
They don't like the salt so they may have very few free ions. I would stick a couple of spoons of table salt between the plates also.
That would perk them up and help with the electrical flow. The slug protection crowd will be after us. 🤔😁
@@mikeflight9 slugs don't like copper anyway 🐌🐌(although that may be an urban myth - a Google search comes up with contradictory results).
I noticed the bottle for the de-ionised water has a picture of a battery on it.
Yes, you top up your lead acid batteries with de-ionised water to prevent them from being contaminated by the ions present in tap water.
