  • The Commodores 1985 hit song "Nightshift" is a tribute to legendary singers Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson who both died in 1984. The two have since been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The title of the song was inspired by the 1982 movie title "Night Shift". For The commodores, the song was their only hit after Lionel Ritchie left the group in 1982. It peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Chart and UK Singles Chart, #1 on the Hot Black Singles Chart and R&B Chart. It also won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1985. When the song was performed on Motown Returns to the Apollo in the early 1980's, more verses were added to honor other Motown legends who had passed on.
