    You'll see the interview next week. It's only Jonas but I'd love to do one with the whole band too. Happy Friday, all!

      And as for why I love this band, Jonas is a reason. But the sorrowful vibes from their very metal origins to now have always been the selling point. There are harsh vocals on their first two albums and I love those albums. They make sorrow beautiful. Strange but true.

    I might be wrong here but Jonas is sometimes singing with rhythmic displacement which is typical for progressive metal. It brings more life into the songs and gives the singer the opportunity to play with words and sentences, to create a different kind of flow.

    A couple years ago when I 1st started trying to get you to check them out, I requested Hypnone, and you've finally gotten to the album it's on, this is getting pretty close to finally happening lol.
    I'm so glad you enjoy this band. They are amazing, they have a way with atmosphere to pull on emotions, not as well as MDB, but that's my opinion.

    Pls do an older album
    Ive already suggested these and ill do it again! 😂😊
    -Omerta (since you love acoustics)
    And
    -Burn the remembrance (a sorta happy song, as most of theyre songs are depressing)

    Thanks for leading me on my Katatonia rediscovering journey (as I commented under the original My Twin reaction video). I'm still unable to fully connect with other songs than My Twin. There were many parts I liked about this song on first listen, but somehow it didn't fully lock me in. Maybe it needs more listens, or maybe I need to be in the right mood.
    As for the vocal melody, I feel like Jonas is rather telling a story than singing a melody here. Maybe I need to focus on the lyrics to connect with the song, but I rarely listen to music that way.

    I absolutely love Katatonia- his voice is what caught my attention first, it's so nice
    I recommend the song No Beacon To Illuminate Our Fall off their latest album.

    I'm glad you liked this song. It was my introduction to Katatonia, which led to an obsession. As a bassist, I LOVE jamming along with these people...and with you. Hope you keep enjoying their output.

    I can never tire of your Katatonia reactions. Jonas is an absolute mood (obviously). Speaking of that, if you're feeling adventurous, you can watch a documentary from the early days of the band until 2011 here: czcams.com/video/CSQh2cJk24M/video.html (Lots of Jonas narration)

    Sorry to crash the party, but did anyone suggest Katatonia - Brave Murder Day yet? Its not really your thing so maybe do it off the channel lol, but I'll just hint - Mikael from Opeth had something to do with it.... "Brave Murder Day" is an album, but first 3 songs of that album are called "Brave" "Murder" and "Day" and they're all classics (you'll like the 3rd one most! :)) It was released in 1996, same year as Opeth's second album Morningrise (you listened to "Black Rose Immortal" and "To Bid You Farewell" from that album I think).

      Mikael did the screaming vocals on that album, I believe. Maybe my favorite Katatonia album overall

    As to why I love this band:
    Jonas Renkse vocals are a huge factor. So haunting.
    [His voice reminds me of Maynards voice occasionally, incidently the songs from Tool i like most is when he sings melodically (vs angry maynard). Thats why i tend to enjoy APC and Puscifer more.]
    But their music/instrumentals is big reason also, they have very melancholic depressing sound that I love.
    They arent afraid to mix in Trip-hop, Heavy, Synth, and Acoustics. (Like Deftones)
    But my style has always been bleakness. Even when i listened to alt metal (Mudvayne) to Black metal (Shining, Xasthur, Abyssic Hate)
    I know its not for everyone

    I hope that before you go on your Kataonia hiatus you check out their earlier stuff. All of the songs youve done so far are certainly great, but they all sort of encompass the same time period for them (roughly), and therefore have a similar sound. Their earlier stuff is quite different (still great though).

      I’d be really interested to hear what she thinks of Jonas’ voice in that ‘Discouraged Ones-Last Fair Deal’ period when he was still trying to find his voice. He was out of key some and very fragile sounding, but that was perfect for those albums, so I liked it a lot, even if it wasn’t smooth, technically.

    • @arwiviv
      @arwiviv Před 6 měsíci

      @@biollanteazul Exactly. It was still Jonas, but a much different Jonas. Personally, that's my favorite era of Katatonia.

    I’ve been a Katatonia fan since the early 90s when my best friends girlfriend brought a demo. It must have been like 1992-ish.
    It was like e year before I found Opeth.
    Anyway, I need to emphasise the absolute need to check out the live performance called Sanctitude. As good as the tracks are on their own, the acoustic versions are so much more amazing. After like 10 years it’s still the best live performances I’ve seen (and heard). Completely scaled down and soooooo much better for it!

  • @biollanteazul
    @biollanteazul Před 6 měsíci

    Honestly the later (last 10 years or so Katatonia is harder for me to get into because they got more into prog, and while they’re good at it, it just doesn’t resonate as much as when they were focused and kept their rhythmic ideas simple and let Jonas hit those nice little runs that he got so good at. Viva Emptiness through Night is the New Day is their sweet spot.

    • @dennisrivera1453
      @dennisrivera1453 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I agree 💯 %
      But i will say, once youre brain adjusts to proggy sounds, and understands, it hits hard.
      I slept on Dead End Kings (DEK), becuase I just wasnt into prog rock/metal. (Re-discovered Tool/Soen, etc.
      Went thru a rough time, and depression hit, Katatonia can only fill that void. Gave DEK another listen, and i could not stop listening to the album on repeat.

    • @biollanteazul
      @biollanteazul Před 6 měsíci

      @@dennisrivera1453 In my case, I don’t have any trouble understanding what they’re doing, thankfully I have a decent grasp on complex rhythms, it’s just that in think it’s less effective.
      I very well may have a bias because so many of my favorite bands went down the “maturing means becoming a prog band” path, and my personal feeling is that in most cases those bands actually gave up some of their uniqueness in doing so (the biggest examples being Opeth and Enslaved).
      I don’t give up on bands because of it, but so far, very little of it connects with me. I’m not Katatonia’s case I think they got bored with the sound they were best at, and I respect their need to try new things, it just doesn’t resonate with me at a similar level.
