All the anime fanart and all that? That was just the people animefying all the characters until the sole creator of the series, ZUN, decided to outsource a fighter game spin off that had anime designs and created several manga, though he never drew those art. So Gensokyo was created and become a home to Yokai and other beeings no longer tolerated or outcasted from the modern world. Thoese are the incidents where the games are about. Also since when some Yokai fight eachother, the world could be in danger, the Spellcard rules were established.
