I have two Omegas, one is a limited edition Bond piece, I have one Rolex Daytona, I have Fortis, TagH, and lots of other watches in my collection, but I also have four Steinharts, two of which are limited editions of just 100 pieces. My daily driver flips between my Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Red and my Omega Seamaster 2254.50. The Steinharts are great watches and real watch enthusiasts love them.

Excellent (& honest) review, I agree with you about preferring homage watches of discontinued and highly collectable references. As someone who can't afford to spend luxury car or small house money on vintage watches I really appreciate companies like Steinhart and the passion they have for classic designs.

So love this review and the great observations here you make. And while I don't like the Ocean Red's faux-yellowed unframed markers nor its red lettering, yet I so adore the dome crystal and aluminum insert with the "10"-minute marker. I like them so much, in fact, that I have exchanged my own Ocean One's flat crystal-with-cyclops and original bezel insert for those of the Ocean Vintage Red. It took a while to find them... but I eventually did. And, wow! What an improvement!
While there are other high-end homages (including Steinhart's own newer 39mm little brothers), yet only the Steinhart 42mm models (e.g., the Ocean One and this Ocean Red) come with fully brushed -- not high polished -- cases and bezels and with only the case sides polished as stylish accent... thus presenting a more rugged masculine appearance as the no-nonsense, hard-as-nails, professional dive watch it truly is. Additionally, I actually love Steinhart's thinner case shape over the Rolex's that has the Ocean One sit lower on and closer to the wrist, especially for those like me with flatter wrists. And I also love the Steinhart's more-tapered lugs that meet and meld beautifully with the bracelet as also did the lugs on the pre-ceramic Subs.
In my view, if you're going to homage the Sub, then you must do it right: It must be a fully "Swiss Made" watch with ETA 4-hertz (28,800 bph) movement and with top-notch engineering and design, throughout. And that narrows the field considerably! It also must strike the right aesthetic chord, too. And... if possible... even perhaps improve a bit on the design of the Rolex with a thinner sleeker case over the bulky block case the Subs/Sea Dwellers have...such that while looking like a Sub, yet to the discerning eye, it also actually surpasses it and stakes that claim for itself as both homage AND its own design! And only the Steinhart 42 fills every one of these parameters... ticks off every box of that exacting list of criteria perfectly.
In my view, only Steinhart offers REAL Rolex-esque quality yet also with a leaner, meaner aesthetic and more professional-grade gravitas. While understandably not possessing the flashier "look-at-me" aesthetic of the polished luxury watches seen on the wrists of glamorous James-Bond pretty boys Sean Connery and Roger Moore, much less the prissier Pierce Brosnan (yes... I know... he wore Omegas), yet this and all other 42mm Steinharts most certainly would have looked and functioned perfectly on the wrists of real spies and special operatives as more realistically portrayed by Jason Bourne and, yes, even Daniel Craig's version of Bond. After all, while I could never see the real Bond beating a man to death with an insanely priced $10-15K Rolex Submariner held and used like "brass knuckles" as Ian Fleming once actually portrayed him doing, yet I most certainly could see this happening with a $500 rock-solid Steinhart! And I am so grateful to Steinhart for being the ONLY company to understand all these key qualities and components such a watch should have... and incorporate almost all of them into a single watch line at a truly affordable price.
I am hopeful that someday, Steinhart will offer ALL of the very best features into a single watch by offering the Ocean One 42mm with domed crystal, aluminum / ceramic insert with the "10"-minute marker, and a better designed clasp (as you noted in your vid). But for now, I've been happy making exactly these mods to my own Ocean One, which now has the domed crystal, aluminum insert with the "10"-minute marker and, now, the better and more tapered bracelet and clasp you have on your Ocean Red. And it is FINALLY for me... the absolute PERFECT Sub/Sea Dweller homage.
Thank you again for providing such a wonderful and spot-on review of the Steinhart 42mm and all its superior characteristics over other homages... and, frankly, a few qualities and characteristics superior to even the Rolex costing well over 10 times the price.

Very similar tastes to you in the fact that I own the ova oris 65 and several Rolex sports models . In fact the ovm version 1 was my first automatic around 7 years ago .and this got me interested in watches . I sadly sold this on my journey and replaced it recently with a version 3 . Prefer the solid black dial of the first but the tropical dial is ok too . Great watch for the money although the oris 65 is a far more refined piece , however at five times the price this isn’t a surprise. Nonetheless the ovm is a fabulous piece for the price.

I had this version for a few years, and really liked how it complemented my Omega Aqua Terra as a casual weekender watch. Unfortunately it flooded while I was swimming in Costa Rica. Got it back from service, then the crown stem fell out. I think I got a lemon because I haven't seen anyone complain about these issues on Watchuseek. I'm really considering a new one of this model because as you said, it's an homage to an out-of-production true vintage piece that could cost 50-100x the price of it. I just wish Steinhart's logo didn't look like it was on its way home after a long night at the bar.

That was a good question- I wish he had answered. At that time I was buying lots of Steinharts and really enjoyed them. I moved up in class since then. I bought Breitlings, Omegas, and Rolex brand pieces. I still have some of the Steinharts but have been giving them away to close friends since buying the luxury brands. I don't wear them any more, not sure why. They are a great value and are nicely made watches.

@@UptickWatchReviews OK! Sounds good! My middleman is FedEx. I am in the USA. Unfortunately for me, Steinhart uses FedEx for shipping and charges shipping fees. Than FedEx charges its fee and mandates to fill out "Homeland Security Application". If not filled and paid, the parcel sent back within 5 days. Gnomon has no shipping fee and ships via DHL. Arrives to NY in about 4-5 days max.

I would rather get a quality watch Such as a Steinhart at a Good Price. And add a Premium Bracelet myself. Keeping the expense of the Upfront Purchase . To a Minimum. Bracelet's are like unto that of Tires and or Wheels for car's As Long as the Drive Train is quality and the Suspension. One can Up Grade the Incidentals. Very Smart of Steinhart. Opening up to a wider Market with a Lower Price of Entry

A Rolex makes you feel special? Why?
Rolex couldn‘t sell you a watch like this, even if they wanted to. It‘s made after the Rolex Seadweller Double Red, which was produced and sold in the 70s. Today it costs you between 40.000 and 60.000 dollars, that depends on the condition the watch is in. If you can find one, that is...
The Steinhart Vintage Red is a great watch, if you can tolerate a bad quality control, concerning mostly bezel insert and date wheel. They are almost never aligned properly.
The watch itself runs great (better than my Submariner), and with the new Steinhart jubilee it‘s great to wear it. And if someone tries to tell you he feels a difference wearing Steinhart or Rolex, it‘s nonsense. Try to grab one of the first batch with green lume. The fake lume on the later VR looks terrible, and they changed the red lettering after the first batch, which looks terrible, too.
