A fascinating film. We have leylandii down both sides of our 150ft garden. It's a 1930s house and we moved in in the 1980s. The trees were pretty high then and I used to cut them down to 15 feet with a bow saw! I kept pruning them back every year but this year, it's time to get the professionals in. These things are the arboreal version of Michael Myers in the Halloween films... they just keep growing back no matter what you do to them!

😂😂😂 Fortunately they were far enough away but since this work was done, the trees have grown back and we can’t see the houses again 🤔 you could argue it was a waste of money

A job well done Trev. We have a similar hedge at the bottom of our garden and We did ours last summer. I am going to try and keep it cropped on going because they grow so quickly. 👍

@@PoshcatsCamping how well will the top grow back ? and how quickly? Also, I assume there is not much you can do with the width as going back to the brown the confier will likely never grow back ?

Wow what a difference! We had conifers as big as these (maybe not as thick though) running all the way down our garden (about 150 ft) when we moved in but we took them down ourselves. Was a very long job though. I used to love the chainsaw! When I lived in Suffolk I used to chat up the farmers to let me take down their dead trees for firewood. Another love of mine ....chopping wood so good for the soul. Alas those days are gone now but I so did enjoy watching this. You always manage to bring my memories back Trev. Incidentally I used to work in the orchards at Aspal Cider (not sure if I mentioned this before) I think living in Suffolk brought out the Tomboy in me. A bit different to the Office management jobs I had when I moved back to Essex before I retired. Thanks again for the memories - Lin xx
Thank you for your lovely comments Lin. These trees are about 110 feet along the back of the garden. It’s a new garden now and we have a few more jobs planned. My bad legs wouldn’t allow me to climb trees any more. Oh to be young and fit again 😁👍🏻 Trev

I planted a tiny ‘miniature’ conifer about three or four years ago. It stood about 12inches high. It’s now 6 foot! I took the top off as it hit the top of my fence, I hope I can keep it under control but these damn things grow an inch every time I blink , I swear they do. Like weeping angels (Dr Who reference)

That is so deep you could live inside there! Looks very neat but not sure I like looking at the other houses! Those guys look so comfortable in the trees. I couldn't do that job. Conifer sap gives me a really nasty reaction.
We can see the houses from upstairs but that’s part of living in a town. The difference now is remarkable. We have a proper garden again. We hope to tidy the lawn, pond and fences as the next stage. Thanks for suggesting I put this video online. 😄👍🏻 Trev

Looks like it was left so long because it wasn't your light that was being blocked. Did your neighbours have to resort to the high hedges act?
It was very tall when we moved into the house and just kept growing. None of our neighbours had any issues with the trees before or afterwards so we were very fortunate in that regard 😃 Trev
Hi just found your channel, I am thinking of getting the same van and was wondering how well the Heating is on the bolero, eg does it heat the whole van ? Can you leave it on through the night? Is it costly? I’ve never owned a motorhome so don’t know much about them but have decided to sell my house and live full time in one, any advice or tips would be great 👍 cheers
Hi Neil. It is possible to live in a Bolero full time. The first thing to consider is the layout you prefer and what will work for you. You need to consider the weight (3.5 Tonne if you passed your test after Jan 1997) due to the C1 element on your licence and the length if you wish to park in local car parks or stealth park in the streets. With regards to heating, the newest Bolero vans have ALDE heating which is a wet system rather than blown air. it does heat the whole van using propane or electric hookup. The costs are difficult to quantify and depend on weather conditions but in the depth of winter the costs will be quite high. You could expect to use a 6kg bottle every week in winter (£23 per week) or you could have the Calor converted to an onboard refillable system to reduce the ongoing cost. I would advise that you have a good look around at different layouts and models, also check the older and newer vans to ensure you find something that suits your budget. There are a lot of good used vehicles entering the market now and opportunities to grab a good deal. Good luck with your search. :) Trev

The house looked better with the full hedge
We loved the full hedge but it cut the natural daylight too much. We still enjoy the birds flying in and out from our windows 🙂
@@PoshcatsCamping mine is exactly the same but with 4 beeches in a row next to it.. I am having 3 of the beeches removed and will have access to one end of the pine hedge and will take it down to about 14 feet..I just need find a way of disposing off the cuttings,, My Pine hedge is about 20 feet high and comprises of 12 trees stretching for 60 feet. Fortunately our sun rises from the east
Do you know if this can be done to arborvitae bushes? I have 3 in a row that have gotten so tall I can't trim them myself. I'd like to cut off the tops about 24" or more.
Sorry but I don’t know if it’s possible to cut those type of trees. We were unsure if our trees would survive but they have and are now awaiting to be dressed back again to tidy them up for winter 🙂 Trev
Does that long pole have a cutting attachment of some sort?
Yes there is a petrol engine at one end and the hedge trimmer at the other end of the long pole 🙂

How is the hedge looking now? Did the top grow back or is it still brown on the top?
The front is still looking good. If you look onto the top there is no green at all, just hollow. Very happy with the result 😃
Wow ! May I ask you the distance between those plants in order to create a barrier so DENSE and TALL ? Thanks.
The trees have been allowed to grow there for approximately 40 years and now take up 10 feet in width. The trunks are approaching one foot in diameter and they are spaced about 10 feet apart. I think the person that planted them wanted a screen to protect a swimming pool in the 1980s but in 1996 this part of his garden and orchard was sold to make way for houses. That’s progress 🤣

Not much good at deflecting sound. Perhaps a tall fence with plants or climbers on would be better ? Trees are high maintenance once they get big. Unless you have a lot of space.

What does 'dressing' mean when referring to conifers?
When we say dressing we mean trimming the top, front and sides so they are flat and even like a giant box hedge. 😃 Trev
I would like to see if they are alive now that it is 3 years later. The electric company topped one of my Leyland Cypress 4 or more years ago but they only took about 30% this video looks like they took 60%. Just wondering if they lived?? Thank you
Yes the trees are still alive but just act as a screen and have no shape any more. We have dressed the front of them twice since this video. 😃
@@PoshcatsCamping WOW !!! Thank you so much for the FAST Response. I am thinking about renting equipment in 2 days and topping about 25 of my 55-60 foot Leyland Cypress trees. What type of tree were these in the video? I know you did yours in March but it is mid May in Atlanta Georgia. Do you think it will be too hot to top them now? The thing is they just cleared 9 acres of forest that used to create a wind break and now my trees are exposed to the wind and I am afraid they will just blow over. We can 50 mph wind when a hurricane comes through Florida or up from Savannah... Thank you for the Instant response!!!!!

@@JC-bu8zd the roots of these Leyland Cyprus trees are not very deep so by reducing the height you will minimise the risk of them being blown over. I am no tree expert but I know they grow faster between May and September but not sure that it makes much difference when you cut them. We took our trees down before the birds started nesting, which was a concern for my wife. Don’t underestimate the amount of tree that you need to dispose of. The shredder filled several tipper trucks.

I'm not sure whether there are Certified Arborists in England - disclosure, I'm in the Eastern U.S. This man could have consulted with the Royal Horticultural Society first before doing this. Two things just happened here - these property owners just gave up 1) their privacy from others looking in their windows and yard and 2) their sound proofing from traffic and street noises. Aside from considering the global warming effect. For those in the U.S., a responsible property owner needs to look into consulting a Certified Arborist before topping anything. They are trained specialists in trees and this kind of work. Tree services are not Certified Arborists. Trees should NEVER be topped, it kills them. And he doesn't say what type of conifer these hedges are - it looks like two at least species - whatever they are, some conifers NEVER grow back if they are topped. What we need to see is a video from one year later to determine what they looked like and if they were the kind that do well with topping.

We reduced them before the nesting season started. I was very worried about that but there’s still plenty of room at the bushy hotel 😁👍🏻 Trev

Yes still thriving two years on. We trim them now to keep them level 😃
@@PoshcatsCamping would you be able to do a short video of how the top looks now? I have some hedges like this for customers of mine and I’m very hesitant to cut them like this.
My concern was whether or not the top would grow back with new growth.
@@315-snoblow I think you are right to be hesitant. The trees were topped in 1995 and 8 feet was removed from them. This video was taken in 2019 and a further 10 feet was removed from the top. The trunks were not cut this time so you can see it’s purely the front that has grown thick that provides the screen. We lose 10 to 12 feet of our garden with these trees and although they remain 12 feet high if you stand under them there is no overhead coverage.
