Homeowners Neighbour Wouldn’t let us Cut her side of this OVERGROWN Hedge!

  • Hi everyone this video is of a hedge I have filmed before in an older video. The neighbour stopped letting me cut the other side of the hedge so it had become very overgrown and messy!
In this video the neighbour had finally allowed me to go round her side and get the hedge tidied up again!
Hope everyone enjoys the video and has a good Easter holiday. Thanks for watching 😊🙂

I had neighbours like her until recently and as soon as they moved out and before the new tenants moved in I lopped some pretty major branches from the 2 storey trees growing over the fence onto the neighbours side. Very satisfying! And I now have sunlight in my backyard ☀️

Having been in the business for many years, we found putting down plastic tarps to collect the debris as we cut made for much easier and faster cleanup. Especially helpfull in wet contitions as well. Saves on hand picking large debris and raking so much of the small.

Hmm. New neighbour has mentioned something about a "green hedge to me. Suddenly I foresee issues. Probably not from her side, because they're a few decades younger than I and love gardening. I have to pay someone to wield the edge trimmer etc...More work for me. I'm going to have to change that program. Also I think it's short sighted of them as well. Why make more work for yourself? not going to stay middle aged and fit forever, right? As we see so often on this kind of video. You never know what the future holds...

Had a neighbor who had tall aborvitea trees on her side of the property line that grew over a foot into our yard through a cyclone fence and 12 ft high. I trimmed them back to the fence and two ft above it just to be able to mow without cducking. She got upset and threatened to sue me if the trees died. They didn't. The next year the foliage closed up the exposed in er branches. Years later, however, many of the trees along her entire property line died, which were not along my property line. She had to get a landscaper to remove and replace them, and even some of the new ones died. I'm glad she couldn't try to blame me for her losses.

In my view hedging should be planted further into your own garden/away from any fence thus allowing the back to be trimmed so they don’t start pushing on to the fence behind, no matter whose fence it is. Most people, especially the elderly, want privacy but may not be happy having to let some stranger onto their property each year. Our neighbour’s conifers and brambles used to poke through the gaps in our fence and we had a battle keeping it tidy and off our path which ran alongside it. It looked a mess and brambles caught our legs. We didn’t complain but it was a continual nuisance . Anyway, now in a new home and replanting the hedge here that is far too thick and pushes back on our own fence - so, with our experience, we are planting all hedge a few feet into our own garden and when needed walk between hedge and fence to trim. Should be easier to paint preservative onto fence in future to help maintain that too - hopefully keeping us and our neighbours happy!

I had this problem with a neighbour years ago, the law says you may cut anything overhanging your boundary, but you must place all cuttings back on the neighbours side of the fence etc, if you do not do this you may be liable for criminal damage, l gave my neighbour the option to rent the land his trees were taking up! He declined,so out came the hedge trimmer! And an afternoon of hard graft for him clearing up HIS cuttings, the problem never arose again, his marriage failed,he moved on,and a neatly trimmed conifer hedge was born!! Stand YOUR ground !

Rent the land?. What a stupid thing to say in the situation. It grew on your side needed to be cut from your side so just do it and cut out the grandstanding. Any normal person bothered by it would just cut it and either get rid themselves or put back on the neighbours side but you clearly made the entire thing a bigger deal than it needed to be. Also you say "tree" then end with "bush". If you're going to twist the story so you don't come across as the twat you acted like then get your story straight. Or just tell the truth in the first place.

Thankfully new people moved in not many years ago and they do occasionally give them a very light trim. From what I can see you've got your work cut out cleaning up that mess.

People are nervous about things because they have been undermined in the past in some way. I know people can be stubborn or cantankerous (myself included) But, once I am shown politely that I was being helped, not hindered, I was on board. Not every mule that balks is a biter. Just have a little softness when it comes to neighbors. I learned this the hard way from being on both sides of the fence.

You did a beautiful job on those hedges and had the perfect equipment to do it. I have a Stihl chainsaw but it's way too heavy to hold with one hand. My neighbor's tree branches are pushing on our fence and causing too much shade and the lawn won't grow there. I need to take some limbs off. We don't need their permission if it's growing over our property line.

Hedges are a huge bone of contention, made worse by people who plant them too near to a boundary so they can"t properly maintain them themselves without causing neighbours the expense and hassle of having to keep something they didn't plant under control. If they are a boundary hedge then it is a different matter but there should be some agreement on the height. In this case if there was no expense involved then it was perhaps a little foolish of the neighbour not to have them trimmed. The situation can become more difficult should the owners of the hedge move. People should be more circumspect in their planting near boundaries to avoid causing any undue stress to neighbours. Any dispute between the two has to be recorded in documentation during the sale process.
    Lovely job on the trimming.

There will always be neighbors who don’t care what their yards look like, who don’t trim bushes and trees, and don’t rake leaves or pick up branches and fallen sticks. When you ask them if you can do it for them, they take offense, say no, and then don’t do it. What they don’t realize is, taking care of your property is not only showing pride in what you own, but good for your mind, body, soul, and healthy. Get outside, get moving, and get some fresh air.

I worked as a gardener for many years (fully qualified sole trader) and came across many people who simply wouldn't respond to bullying tactics. This is victim blaming.
