- In this video, i teardown this 8 speed unit that had no forward, found the C and E clutch burned up. Parts a little rough to get, sent converter out for overhaul and worked real nice on the Road Test. Happy Holidays to all, thanks for the continued support.

As always , amazing Garry.
Thanks for teaching.
Thank you for your video and knowledge.
Muchas gracias por tus video 👍
Thanks for these videos, they're really helpful. I'd love if you gave a rebuild/reassembly video for this same transmission. *LIKED*
will keep that in mind
Oh shit, this is the one I have been waiting for. 8HP70 and a 90 is what I want to see.
Not a bad unit to work on just parts are hard to ge
You probably seen both the 8hp70 and 8hp75 for the V8 Ram 1500, do the housings have the same dimensions and mounting patterns ? I want to swap my 70 for a 75 and use the 8hp70's electronics so everything is plug n play.
What was the total cost in this rebuild for the parts? Great video too 👍
Hey gary i got a 8hp45 bmw f30 320d it was stuck in park stripped down the box and found p2 carrier spinning on input shaft replaced that now when changing to 6th it hesitates and goes back to 5th and then limp mode gear ratio error 5> x any advise will be greatly appreciated
nice
A Nag1 to 8 speed swap would be nice!!!
In the original bmw workplace manual for 8hp45/70 they diddnt say to replace the bolts only the sealant ring arount them how do u feel to use them again? I work on the same transmission for a project. And indeed some parts are difficult to find. Thanx in advance ur videos help me alot
I think you will be fine
Pretty tricky one there
Great videos like always. Which zf transmission are best .
I like the 6 speeds, they have common issues like they all do but the units don't really blow up, rarely have hard part damage
@@GaryFerraro thanks for quick reply. What like common issues they all have.
@@harvrindrsingh The 6 Speeds have rear stator bushing wear and solenoid problems
Hello Gary, thanks for this very interesting video. Nice to see how skillfully you work with these complex gears.
I also have a ZF automatic, I think the 45 (BMW F36)
I also have a problem with my zf automatic transmission.
As I roll the car towards the stoplight, I hear a grinding noise until I come to a stop. When I let the car roll towards a traffic light and I hear the noise and put it in neutral, the noise is gone. So it must be gearbox i think. It still shifts well, a little harsh at times, but they all have that in the long run.
What do you think, when you read my story?
regards.
Ok, Question, while standing still foot on the brake car in drive or reverse, do you hear the noise? if you do, when you put it in Neutral or park does the noise go away?
@@GaryFerraro no, I really only hear the noise when slowly coming to a stop at the traffic light
My zf850re @ 60k will pop out of reverse when backing out of my garage? Any ideas?
Great video Gary! Do you have a favorite ZF transmission?
I like the ZF6HP26 units
Isn't that the transmission that came with the 2012 ram?
Great video, question for you. Where did you get that test plate?
The guy i was rebuilding them for had, i would think you could probably get them from the dealer
@@GaryFerraro thanks
Do you rebuild transfer cases that have clutch’s in them?
Not anymore, shop is way to busy so now i just purchase rebuilt ones
One acre of parts for a f. gearbox.
I have a 3-4 flare sometimes.. wondering if my D clutch is failing?
probably but also could be just that the clutch pressure adaptives are maxed and cant command more pressure a quick transmission readout software wise could help if the clutch fails the trans will throw a code since its super smart and knows if something is wrong
Question for anybody knowledgeable here....sometimes my 8HP95 will shift from 2 to 1 while creeping forward after coming to a stop. The engagement from 2 to 1 is a very hard engagement. Speedometer reads around 1-2 mph when then happens. Is this normal?
hi, that's bad programming on the transmissions part had that aswell and chose to just remove 1st gear all together in software so it doesnt do that anymore.
What is the proper name for the rear seal connecting to the shaft
That is the Name, Rear Seal
Can't believe they have that chain in there.
off axis pump, a lot of Transmission have that now
What pick are you using for the snap ring? Looks much stronger than mine
what time in the video am i using it?
Any idea where i can get a spare clutch D hub shell from? Building an 8HP70 currently.
Never mind, Erikksons hooked me up!
Gary, I just used your video to tear down and rebuild my hp70. When I installed it my dash cluster says its not in park and is in limp mode. Any ideas you could offer would be greater appreciated. Great video btw. Thanks
Did you hook up the park piston to the linkage inside the trans?
@@GaryFerraro yes sir
I also ohmed the solenoids and they are in range.
@@ronswartz3695 scan it for codes, if any clear them and see if it's ok
No matter how many times we change the atf fluid. If there's wear on the internal components of the automatic transmission, changing the atf fluid will not resolve it and the car may not even drive anymore.Do you agree?
I guess that depends on what’s worn and how bad. If you have no more friction material left then when you flush it you won’t have the gritty fluid to help and it could make it worse. You should change the fluid before you have problems. But changing fluid can resolve issues, I had a transfer case in a f25 bmw x3 that would shutter when turning and doing a fluid swap fixed the issue.
Great video Gary! Do you have a favorite ZF transmission?
Ever had an 8HP70 with a harsh at times 2-3 shift?
I have had some with harsh downshifts, i reset the shift adapts and it fixed it
yup bad adaptives do that for you. reset, if its still happening a tune up on the transmisson will most likely fix that.
Longest pan I've ever seen.
Gary, quite recently we brought my 2016 1500 ram, with this transmission, into the shop because of a card in bike stokes sound when I hit the 30-40 mph range. It would go away upon manually shifting or putting it into neutral. To me, everything pointed to the MDS, even found a video that sounded exactly like the problem I had and it was the MDS.. So, they brought it in and said no, its the transmission pump.. its chain driven and when we put it up on the lift we can feel the pump shaking. But watching this video leads me to believe how could they feel the pump shaking especially where the transmission is on the dodges... they said when on the lift they replicated the speed and could see it shaking, could feel it shaking... nevertheless they diagnosed the problem as being the oil pump is shot. Is there any way that the chain can slack and cause a card in bike stokes kind of noise??
If it were pump you would hear it all the time, the pump is always turning. So you hear a noise in drive and reverse and goes away in park and neutral?
@@GaryFerraro So I only hear the "ticking noise" when I am decelerating and enter into the 40- 30 mph range... the sound will come and go. But if I use the manual shifters on the wheel the sound goes away.
No sound in reverse or in park.
So was it a 70 or 90?
This was a 70
@@GaryFerraro is the 8hp90 more different or almost the same?
almost the same@@240sxandcivic
Have you use nokia 3310 to film this ?
