- A REALLY RARE video of Deep Purple performing one of their signature songs black Night on Top Of the Pops.
Note that though they play it close to the original, they don't copy it - thus, no lipsynching.
There guys were right up there with the top greats, nothing but just a great band
I watched them this night with my nose to the TV screen. Heavy rock from then on. I was 14 and now 63. :)

...and I had exactly the same experience in 1995. Saw this clip on the tele (BBC 2’s Rock Family Trees) as an 11 year old and loved Purple and Blackmore from that day til now (now 37!)

Love this live version best! Funny that they wrote it half-drunk in 10 minutes - and they now admit lyrics don't make sense at all. The perspective of age!

@mrjohn1964 Oh right, thanks for the info, i'll need to check 'em out. It was just Roger Glover i saw talking about it in the old 1995 BBC rockumentary Rock Family Trees. I suppose it doesn't really matter anyway as Ricky Nelson didn't do the original version of Summertime (think it went back even further than '62!)

David, I saw the same documentary as a 12 year old rock guitarist, sat in the living room in my pyjamas back in 1995 and this clip changed my life...I was hooked from this moment on! As I remember it, they contrasted the Nelson track with this footage and I loved the heavier sound. As you've said elsewhere here, this re-recording is actually better (rockier) than the single...weird!
I have always preferred this totp version to the single. Did they record it especially for the show? Lower in pitch, slightly slower and heavier...
Due to pressure from the musicians Union TOTP had a ban on miming( lip syching) to the record version. ( introduced 1966) Bands had to rerecord the song and then mime to that OR they could sing live over a backing track OR if they where a solo act like Shirley Bassey or Tom Jones they could sing live with the TOTP orchestra backing them live. This last till 1980. One of the reasons bands like Queen produced videos to get around rerecording Bohemian Rhapsody.. Edit: occasionally bands performed totally live; David Bowie performed Jean Genie live in 1973 for example.

@mrjohn1964 Much thanks should go to the late Ricky Nelson, they stole the riff for the song from his '62 track Summertime, ha ha. I actually think this re-recorded TOTP version rocks a bit more than the studio single cut that was released.
