  • I've been a big fan of Hang On Back Filter's for a long time now. I finally stopped using them as my main source of filtration for a few reasons...

    I love that you use a variety of filtration on one tank! I could never get myself to do that....but I really think that's awesome! Not to mention the ability to hide it all....lol. Love the vids!

    I enjoyed your post. Thank you for sharing. I have two aquariums. On one I use a sponge filter with an air pump. That one is ok for my 20 gallon aquarium Shrimp Tank. I use a Tidal 75 for my 58 gallon aquarium for the other tank. It works perfectly well. I used to use a couple of different well known brands of HOB like the one you used before, and I can understand your point of view. My Tidal 75 HOB works marvelously well. Never had an issue with it in 24 Hours a day/ three years running. It’s quiet and has a Surface Skimmer on it that no other HOB has. The only thing I change is one of the media in it every three months or so. I also use the Aquarium-Coop large Pre-Filter Sponge on my intake to the filter, but I put a Nylon Stocking over my Pre-Filter Sponge to keep out the Snails and other things that would get stuck with the Impeller. My livestock and plants thrive in this aquarium. I manage to sell the Plantlets, stems, runners, and trimmings from my plants from this tank. I also sell many of the Fry’s from this tank. I attribute my success for being an Aquarist to my Tidal 75 HOB. I know of many other systems to use, but if it works; don’t mess with it. A beautiful aquarium doesn’t come of its own accord. You have to invest time and TLC into your aquarium to have a nice aquarium. You have use what’s best for you. I kept a Canister Filter for another tank. That worked well. I sold that whole setup to an aspiring aquarist. It’s still up and running. I’m happy for her. We must all Tank Accordingly! Later! Happy with my success in Yuma, Arizona.

      I tried the Tidals a year or so ago and found them to be way to noisy for my liking. But I did really like them!

    Yes, Have had so many headaches trying to keep my hang on the back filter clean, & have only had for 4 months! Too many parts to keep clean! I’m a beginner in this hobby, and was beginning to regret getting my tanks. I have slowly switched to sponge filters! Upkeep is so much easier, but doesn’t clear the water as fast after cleaning. May have to use 2 for each tank. Have a 20 gallon & 2 10 gallon tanks. And it all started with one goldfish! Now I have guppies galore! Love them all! Thought I would breed a couple, and my female had 19 Fry! Of course I had to purchase a grow out tank, and another to separate males & females! My husband said I’m in over my head! During this COVID-19 lockdown, this hobby has kept me busy!
    Thanks for the heads-up on filters! I totally agree! Sue

      My head ache is the hang on back getting clogged and over flowing. Something is wrong with the recent run of these two separate tanks over flowed within a month of getting them. I used them for years but yeah I don't trust them anymore

  • @Static1701
    @Static1701 Před 4 lety +1

    I did this last month. Changed out all my filters in the fishroom to Lee's box filters. I was worried that they might not do the job on the Ciclid tanks, but they do. Saving money on power and filter pads. One of the best things to come out of this for me is that the flow from the box filters does not disturb the fish like the power filters did. I use a Alita 40 to power them.

    I am always in favour of sponge filters mostly because:
    They are cheap, reliable, will last a very long time, shrimp safe, fry safe and the most most important I can run them with an AC/DC air pump which is a lifesaver during powercuts.

    I took my 110, 70 and 50 aquaclear dow because of the constant maintaince. I now use 350 and 450 hydor canisters. I absolutely love, they are low maintenance, strong flow and suctioning. Storing my hob for emergency backups incase. But my hydors where the best investment for my 55, 75 gallon tanks.
    And dont have to worry about the whole priming if power outages

      I had 3 different incidents, 2 in the last month of sponges getting clogged rising up in the path of the water flow to the down spout and 10 gallons of water ending up all over the floor from the over flow. First and second time I thought was a fluke, third time when it happened on my 50 gallon, I took these off all my fish tanks and they are going in the trash. I will go back to canister filter where overflow isn't possible like this. I used them for years but the last 2 I bought both over flowed within a week of using. I don't think the sponge filter was cut to the right length so the sponge filter holder rises up blocking the flow to the down spout area. Only place left to go is up and out over the edge.

    Undergravel filters and sponge filters are what I rely upon for biological filtration. I have an aquaclear and an old HOB, but they aren't my main sources of filtration. They are good things to store cycled media in for new set ups

  • @alans4281
    @alans4281 Před 4 lety +1

    I have done the same thing. I agree but would also add that having everything inside the glass box is one less chance of a leak . I was always worrying about a pothos leaf catching in the waterfall leading to multiple drips outside the tank.

    Every tank in the new fish room is on the central air system with sponge filters. Previously I was using the USB air pumps to run all the tanks. I did order a aqua clear today to help polish a new scape I just set up.

    • @DilettanteCulture

      Ceramic Media is my personal favorite.

    • @Robert_K1
      @Robert_K1 Před 3 lety

      I have phased out the media in my internal filter all together, I have nothing in it. I’m using the internal filter (or rather the pump in it) just to move the water around. I think as long as you have a fairly planted tank you have all the surface area needed for the bacteria. I’ve been doing this for a while and have no problems. Don’t go overboard with stocking, have a bunch of plants, keep shrimp/snails and you should be fine.

  • @centralvalleyaquarium5557

    With all of my tanks, I am only running 3 HOB's just for the same reason you were. To help keep the water clear. The other 90 tanks have sponge filters. They are so much easier to clean. Let us know how they work out for you.

    Got rid of mine as well - too unreliable, prefer sponge filter and can wedge some purigen or floss behind it to clean up the tank if I need to

    I ask because I'm new to the hobby and I don't want to buy a big air pump and then have to battle the noise.

    • @cameronadams1125
      @cameronadams1125 Před 4 lety +1

      The usb air pumps are good and powerful for their size, the loudest part of them is the bubbles produced from the filter. Depends on the size of your tank but the air pumps are cheap but I personally still prefer hang on filters

      Keep spare oring it will leak and ruin your house. It did mine that’s why I only use canisters Or HObs with the motor inside the tank and not outside. The ACs r good for media customization but the exterior motor design is just risky.

      With some sponge filters, like the ATI Hydro Sponge, you can attach an air diffuser which silences the water flow.
