It's funny, people always talk about how cheap Gibsons and Fenders were in the 60s etc. But if you do the math on money conversion they were actually the same or more back then.

      @honkytonkinson9787 Před rokem +11

And there weren’t really any cheap options back then that were playable. Even the student instruments that came along were pretty expensive!

Our perception of money probably has a bit to do with it. No matter how you account for inflation, $250 will always sound like a heck of a lot less than $2500, even if it’s actual valuation was more.

Both the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster were around $350 in 1959. The Strat got cheaper over time

The difference is that wages haven’t kept up with inflation for the past 40-50 years, so while the prices have stayed more or less the same, most ordinary working people don’t have the same kind of disposable income to spend on these expensive guitars anymore.

I'm 66 and just purchased my first "real" LP. It's a 1960 reissue AAA Standard - I freakin' love it. It sits right next to my chair in the living room, and I can't stop looking at it or playing it. So when you say "does it inspire you to play?", absolutely - my fingers can attest to that!! Nice video!!

Your best instrument is the one that pulls you to it and forces you to play.
You have no free volition in the matter.
You will play until your wrist is sore and your fingers bleed.

Then i saw online someone had a F310 from the 90s for $50, i bought it off the guy and when i got home i looked up the s/n on that one and it was built Jan 26th 1996. Congratulations on your first Les Paul! I got my first one last August. It’s funny, the first one I picked up was a November burst model. One thing I noticed is each LP I tried out had slight differences in setup, feel and even tone. Even the same models. So, I went with the best overall one I picked up. It ended up being a 50’s Standard in HCS. The big neck was new to me, but my strat is a V neck so I’m used to some thickness to the neck. Hope you and your wife enjoy the new axe.

Volume knobs were awesome to work also, turn them down and it didn’t make it too muddy or too bright like lots of guitars do, but kept sounding really nice right through the range, which gives it awesome versatility also. Out of my price range but would absolutely love one.

It was $2k and I was almost sold, but then I said to myself if I’m going to spend all this money, why not just go for the one at the top of my bucket list. If not I’d still be chasing that, and wondering if I’d ever get one. Is it worth $2799? Probably not…But it’s so good it made me consider selling all my other guitars. And they all have regular allen trussbord nuts, not the Gibson bolt that's so much easier to adjust. Not to mention the import 3-screw trussrod covers that butt up to the nut, as opposed to the more elegant 2-screw cover of Gibsons.

I bought my first LP standard in 2021 and the guitar tone is amazing. I think the signature guitars have a subtle edge but I wouldn’t say a $2500-$2700 guitar is average. I’d highly recommend getting a LP standard. Truth is, it really comes down to how you play the instrument and the guitar inspires you to play. Don’t get stuck on the price. Always try out the guitar first and you may be surprised how good cheaper guitars may be.

I totally agree. My band is preparing for a gig so I did a head to head with several LPs (not only Gibsons). I played through at least 15 guitars...the Gibson LP Standard 50s came out on top by a good margin. The feel and tone were second to none. It's heavy but there is NO DOUBT in my mind that wood density and the single cut shoulder (compared to double cut guitars) does something significant for tone, resonance, and feel.

Great deals on the early 90's ones right now. And they're just as good as the expensive 80's Tokais. Highly recommend keeping an eye out for them at a good price. I'm sure they'll soon be $2K. And im a huge Classic Vibe fanboy. I have 3 now.

Never should have let that go but I thought I was going to be bassist. But I did get a vintage tele bass in the trade.

It was set up and intonated perfectly, I tried playing several 50s and 60s standards and none of them spoke to me like the one I found. I guess it's true that with LPs, you have to play them to find the one you like.

@@jmdyt3626 I've owned two. A 2008 SG Robot and a 2008 Gibson Longhorn. The reason they're overpriced is because that SG Robot I got for $999 marked down from $2200. It had every feature that was used on the higher end Custom line. Ebony fretboard, 498R and 498T pickups. Custom green glitter paint with lacquer finish. Binding on the frets and an automatic tuner. Lesser Gibson SGs were priced higher and had nothing close to what I mentioned. So yea, I say they're overpriced especially when they're assembled from shared parts off the shelf and given vastly different prices with no explanation. Just a different model number.

I never had the lust for an LP but DID get the Gretsch Jet I had wanted for years. Very different sound though with DynaSonics. Unique to that PUP.

For me I can't justify the expense, but some people must be buying them, however I do spend my money on vintage Australian made Matons, mainly because for that money you can buy pretty much top of the line locally made guitars, and the quality is second to none.

I like your comment about ignoring interweb opinions and buying what you want. I did exactly that.
I bought my first Les Paul a couple of years ago - a 2018 Les Paul Standard HP II (Heritage Cherry Fade). As soon as I opened the case I knew it was special. Build quality was phenomenal. Like the highest spec antique furniture. Musical furniture, if you will.
Since then I've bought a 2016 LP Studio HP (Vintage Sunburst) and a 2015 LP Less+ (Desert Burst). They're both brilliant too. I bought them used in 'minty fresh' condition. Zero build quality issues. Genuinely can't fault Gibson with any of these.
Tonally, the Standard is Brighter than I expected (but can be tempered by the Tone knob). The '57 Classics in the Less+ possibly sound closest to how a LP should (in my head) but for whatever reason my Studio has become the 'go to'. It covers all the bases.
They are worth every penny I paid for them. In fact, thanks to Gibson's year-on price increases, they're now worth more than I paid for them...

Took me a few goes to find a Les Paul I wanted to keep. The best one was probably a '94 Studio with an ebony board that weighed next to nothing which I foolishly sold. I have an R7 Custom now which had suffered a snapped headstock in the past. Perfect for a modder like me. It has a bigsby on it now. It weighs nearly 11lbs but it is very resonant and easy to play. Now that I own a high end Gibson I'm more interested in mid priced guitars from smaller brands. It's a sort of FOMO killer

I think the Gibson USA Standards are definitely worth the money, especially if you can find a really good used one. The problem is LP's are finicky. That is a slick looking guitar. I think that the regular models are absolutely worth the money. Get into the Murphy Labs and some of the other premium stuff and I think they're really marketing to collectors at that point, rather than players.
I just got my first genuine LP in the last year, too. I'm super happy with my purchase.
I went for the r6 p90 version because I like big necks and so that I can have the option of minibuckers later if I want.
The burst version of the p90 guitar comes with a plain grain top so I went with the gold top.
My S and T type guitars have boat necks which I thought were chunky, but the r6 is a true baseball bat; which I love.
Had there been a flamed dirty lemon burst option with the same specs I totally would have gone for that even for a few hundred dollars more.

I tried a Slash Goldtop and the neck profile was what really sold me on it - I've seen videos where people say it's just a 50's Standard with a Slash truss rod cover, and they are soooo wrong it's not funny! The profile on the Slash standard is the closest you'll ever get to the Custom Shop 59 neck without spending Custom Shop $. The neck, in other words, is amazing. Even if the rest of the guitar was ho-hum (which it isn't) I'd buy one just for how that neck feels. The good news is the pickups sound really, really good, and, NO they are not just burstbuckers - they have definitely done more than a tweak here. I abolutely love the guitar and will be going for either the Goldtop or November Burst ASAP.
