  • The Atomic Cannon, at 280 mm, was the largest nuclear capable mobile artillery piece manufactured by the United States. On May 25, 1953, a 280 mm cannon fired an atomic projectile a distance of 7 miles at the Nevada Test Site. Twenty 280 mm cannons were manufactured. None were used in battle. (Sound effects Added.)

There was this weird, temporary time in the 1950s where we actually thought conventional Warfare could incorporate small tactical nuclear weapons to wipe out armored columns, ship convoys, Etc. This was before the Soviet Union had a big nuclear Arsenal with the delivery means to get them here. The idea of tactical nuclear weapons being commonly used went bye-bye once both sides had enough warheads and sophisticated enough delivery systems to guarantee Armageddon. And since tactical nuclear weapons would always lead to strategic nuclear weapons, it seemed a silly idea

velocity of sound is about 340m/s
estimate the velocity of the bullet to be Mach 2
    distance from the explosion center to the gun barrel: 340m/s * 2 * 8 sec = 5440m
the yield is almost the same as little boy
in Hiroshima, a person who was about 3500m away from the epicenter suffered burns to his bare skin
illuminance is inversely proportional to the square of distance: 5440^2^-1 / 3500^2^-1 = 0.414 times heat rays were irradiated into the gun barrel

There's even a nuke fired by a large grenade launcher (M28). At some point American battleships such as Missouri where equipped with nuclear shells for their main guns. And most submarines carried nuclear torpedoes. Including the Russian B-59 that almost used them once.

By 1953, they had likely improved the safety of this type of warhead. It was used in other applications, like a 16 inch naval gun shell.

With these switches, the ignition circle and the control unit were active and before that, they only had "dead switches" in the plug holes so that the bomb wouldn't blow up on the airfield or right after the start.
And it was designed to explode in 500...600 meters altitude (or approx. 1600... 2000 feet in America)
