    My dear Jeri 🐝,
I also share your passion for bees and this was such a pleasure to watch. You are sharing everything in such a creative way…All the bee related treasures you’ve collected over the years are a delight (🐝 are even featured in your wonderful story books)…one day I dream of having my own bees too. Your beehives are beautiful and thank you for the explanation. The felting process of making the bees was very interesting to watch. You have quite a little army of 🐝 ready to fly off to their new homes there. I wish I were not so far far away from where you are…🤗☕️🤍

I keep bees too, and like you, it’s not for the honey. I just love them and seeing them in the garden. The last ones I had were the Italian kind, and they were so gentle. Sometimes, they would attach to my clothing when I was outside and thus, “follow” me into the house and I’d have to gently escort them out.
Unfortunately, after last winter, I lost them. I think it was because of mites and our cold and rainy spring. I spoke with a neighbor, who is a professional beekeeper, and he lost a lot of hives as well. He medicated mine against the mites a few times, but it didn’t seem to work. I also spoke to another beekeeper who has been keeping bees since the 90’s, and he told me that it didn’t seem to matter if you medicated them or not, as he has on numerous occasions either medicated or not with about the same outcome. He gets some hives that just seem to make it through the winter and some that don’t.
Anyway, on that note, if I were you, I’d try to locate some of your local beekeepers and speak with them, as they’ll be able to give you some pointers as to beekeeping in your area and what’s going on. They’ll probably like the fact that you are just doing it for the bees, as I think anything we do for them is appreciated. Likewise, it’s fun to get to know others that love the bees.
Another thing that I think you’ll love, is the fact that bumblebees often use old mice nests or bird’s nests to live in. Thus, Beatrix Potter, the naturalist she was, showed such in her illustrations of “The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse”, where Babbitty Bumble is trying to enter Mrs. Tittlemouse’s house. Likewise, if you leave a nest in a birdhouse, oftentimes the next year, you’ll find bumblebees have moved in and the birds (chickadees where I live), won’t use the birdhouse. (Now, I leave a nest in one of my house’s especially for the bumblebees.)
Another thing you may know or not, is that each kind of bee likes different flowers. Bumblebees don’t like all the flowers that honeybees do. So, if someone tells you that honeybees are hurting your wild bees in your area by taking their food, know that such is not true. Honeybees, in my area, seem to like holly trees, most mints and herbs and the maple tree flowers. On the other hand, Deutzia flowers bring the bumblebees in droves. Likewise, bumblebees seem to really love the cottoneaster flowers (which are so tiny, it makes you wonder why). However, both bees seem to like the blackberry flowers and foxgloves and dandelions. If you can grow a few weeds in your garden, you’ll find they probably will like certain ones too.
Anyway, love your new hives, and you have inspired me to try again. Whatever we can do to make nature thrive is good for us and the planet. Planting native plants in your area will probably also help the bees. Have fun. ❤❤❤

Such great information, thank you! Bumblebees are actually my favorites, and I had no idea that they liked birds nest; always wondered why Babbitty was clumsily bumbling around in Mrs Tittlemouse's tidy home.

I have been keeping bees for years and it is truly a great joy. My garden and orchard love them, too! One really important piece of information to note is the location of your hive(s). They do NOT like to be in busy places and will leave a hive that gets too hot in the summer time. I had to move mine off to the side of the vegetable garden where few people tread and there is some shade in the afternoon. You can wrap them in the winter to keep out the wind, if that is an issue, but generally the hives are kept in a quasi-sheltered place. Have fun... you will be an outstanding beekeeper!

Your content is always so interesting, beautiful and well put together. And very very motivating. You do a wonderful job of keeping us viewers entertained and our minds enriched with history/new information. I for one appreciate that immensely. Those felted bees are absolutely adorable! You are an amazingly talented artist lady. My husband is a bee keeper for about 4 years now. He has about 8 hives now. It's fascinating and a bit of work to keep healthy bees. And my goodness people love raw honey 🍯! It's a fabulous and entriquing product and one can do so much with both the honey and the wax. You should think on attending/joining a local bee club and getting yourself a mentor. It's a big help when you come across issues with your bees when your first starting out. I don't tend to the bees up close, but I do help him with the harvesting of the honey and go to his bee club events and such. It's good to keep informed of his interests so I can talk and understand a little bit of his shop with him. It's really a lot of fun and so pretty to see that honey all clean and pristine at the end of the processing. And yummy to eat, lol. 😊 I try to video some of it for him so he has the memories to view later on also. And I can't help but mention if your in bear country beware that honey will draw them to you. There are precautions you can take though, check with your local bee clubs and wild life authorities on that info if you are. I'm excited for you and wish you the best of luck with this new adventure! ✨️ 🍯 🐝🐝🐝🥀🌼💜

This episode was a real joy for me! I love needle felting and bees! I find it easier to felt bumble bees but will give honey bees a try now too after watching your inspiring video. I'm going into my third year of keeping honeybees now and I'm constantly learning about them. They are truly fascinating creatures. I'm not in it for honey either but they did have a surplus this year, so could share some with me and it was amazing to taste what they had created from the surrounding countryside. They also produce lots of wax too. They will enjoy all the flowers in your garden. Frederick Dunn has a CZcams channel and has lots of info on bees. Learn as much as you can before their arrival. I'm looking forward to seeing your adventures with bees! ❤ Greetings from Ireland!

@@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow The beeswax is so precious, the bees work so hard to make that too, I don't waste a piece. Plenty of winter projects to keep me busy when it's too wet to be in the garden!

Hi Jeri! This is so wonderful! I too have loved bees as long as I can remember, I remember as a young child I would look through my fathers National Geographic magazines and always read the articles about bees and use the pictures for book reports. I always found them fascinating! Down the street from my childhood home was a penny candy store that had an indoor beehive that we could watch bees in the hive, even the queen and see their coming and goings, it was so interesting. I found myself through the years collecting bee things too, vintage honey jars, vintage books on bees and other things. You have piqued my interest, I would love to have a hive… maybe this is the year! Love your felted bees as well, they are awesome!

    Nice story as always. 🙏🤩
The frames you filled with the wax plates should have a little distance to the edges. They are normally put on wire strings and heated to the strings , so that the plates can swing a little bit when the bees are wandering upon them. The plates should not be fixed strongly to the frames but onto the very thin wires. The bees will kit wax themselves to the plates and build the cells , where the queen can lay the eggs in.
The honey frames are not fixed to the under brood box before early summer, then the bees will bring in the collected honey. First they need the honey for themselves and the young brood in the stage under the honey box.
The beehive itself should not be treated or covered with wax, only with lin-oil. The bees will prepare everything with propolis, which they collect from the trees and build this kit to klister every little single hole with this plaster. Then sometimes everything sticks together,😅 but the bees know, why they do that. It’s antibiotic and provides the bees‘ health.
The bees will not come by themselves into the hive. Maybe you get a swarm of a beekeeper, then you can let them live in your wonderful beehive. You will have to work with them. Right, that you are responsible for them. It’s not easy, but fascinating to have bees.
I had them for many years, it was wonderful and I recommend you to learn as much as you can, before starting with the bees. Otherwise there will be more stitches than playing cards. Wish you all the best with your bee and honey adventure, greetings from Austria🇦🇹🙋‍♀️🕊🌻🐝🍯Helga

You are very knowledgeable about this. I am a total amateur. There was a slim space along the sides of the plates and I assumed they were ill fitting... but I guess it was intentional. I won't be putting the hive out until spring, they will be on my covered porch. I am going to join a bee keeping group to learn all that I can before that time. Thanks for all the good tips!

Hi Jeri! It’s been a while as I have been very busy with closing everything down for winter and running back and forth between places. Bees! My father kept bees when I was a child and I remember very well how he harvested the honey. Lately I’ve noticed honey is extremely expensive. I love the honeycomb and get it when I can, did you know that the Egyptians knew of the antibiotic properties in honey and used it on their wounds to the skin? I like the honeycomb to chew on when I have a soar throat. I had a ton of honey bees on the zinnias this past summer and that is a good sign as for a while there it was bad. They actually truck bees down south then send them out west to pollinate the crops and for a while they were dying out , that’s when the big push was on to plant things like alfalfa and flowers that they’re attracted to about ten years ago. the bees you made are absolutely amazing! The way make beautiful things from nothing is a talent not found in many.
You will need to get a spinner to wipe the honey out of the combs. Or you can always cut the combs and keep to sell or eat yourself ( It’s so delicious that way) I remember from my father things like, you must put a queen in it if she does not come along naturally, bees regurgitate their nectar, when they come back to the hive and pass it on to another worker who also regurgitates it into the comb which is the honey. the pollen that’s is passed to the back hind legs, the bees also carry this back to the hive were the workers put it in combs and it’s used to feed the colony. Then there is royal jelly that’s another whole ball game. I wish you the best of luck with the hives, nothing like harvesting your own honey, Candy from God himself 😊 Great video ! Thank you for sharing Jeri…..God Bless ….Brian

Love everything you create and make.❤❤❤❤❤ There are over 20,000 species of Bees in the whole world. Ever since I became a gardener. I can’t believe all the species I have found plus all the other hidden nature gems lurking and crawling around.

@@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow I live in Sullivan County. I have also lived in Washington County,Blount County, Knox County and in Williamson County. I’m from Carter County. School and Work have taken us across Tn except for our move to Sullivan County which was to be closer to our parents and so our child would know and spend time with his grandparents. Now he lives in Maury County! We pretty much have covered east and middle Tn.!!!

Be careful if you live in an area with bear. They destroyed our hives twice. We had to put up an electric fence as a deterrent.
