- Mary Chapin Carpenter is an 18x Grammy nominated, 5x Grammy winning, 6x platinum-selling singer-songwriter with over 16 albums and decades of touring so far in her career. We talk with Mary Chapin about her songwriting process, including her need for solitude and her practice of "song walking," we talk about how she still faces rejection even with all of her accolades and commercial success, how common and easy it is to personalize mistreatment from people in power (and how to combat that), and much more on this very candid final episode of Season 1.

THE OTHER 22 HOURS is hosted by singer-songwriter Michaela Anne and producer Aaron Shafer-Haiss. It features conversations with musicians and creatives, focusing on the time musicians spend OFF-stage, and some of the tools and practices guests have found to be most helpful in building and navigating a career based in creativity.
These conversations focus on the times outside of the public eye and ask the question, what do you do to create sustainability so you can sustain creativity?

My late father was a big MCC fan. I probably saw her at least 5 times in concert in the 90s. Such a talented singer/songwriter, great performer and classy, humble lady. I still listen to her early records fairly regularly. "Never had it so good" and "Down at the Twist and Shout" are my favorite tunes by her but she had many other great ones. Thanks for the interview.
She's in a league of her own! Thanks for sharing, and for watching
MCC is in a league of her own. Thank you for recognizing her gifts and helping share them.
She absolutely is - as an artist and a person.
Thank you for the interview. I really like Mary Chapin's "children," as she calls her songs.
Any conversation with MCC is worthwhile. Superb ❤️🇮🇪
Agreed
I respect MCC so much! Thank you for this fascinating conversation with her!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and listen!
Great conversation. Mary has been a big hero of mine for long time, and meeting her at an ASCAP event years ago was hugely inspiring for me as a young songwriter. She is truly a master of both art and craft.
She absolutely is, and you can hear it in the way she speaks. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this wonderful conversation with MCC. ❤
Thanks for taking the time to listen! We hope you find that some of our other conversations resonate with you as well - Rodney Crowell, Gretchen Peters and Joe Henry are all great.
I am not a musician but MCC is my favorite. What y'all had to say about how managers can tend to minimize a person and make them feel they deserve that bullshit speaks directly to me in a shitty job situation right now. Perfect. Thanks for a great listen.❤
Here’s hoping your situation turns for the better soon!
100 cuts in the film. Still, this is great to listen to.
Oh at least 100 cuts in the first 15 mins! Haha. Being a podcast first and foremost the show is tailored to audio-only, so those cuts are pauses in speech, "ummms" & "ahhhhs", and stuff like that - we don't remove any of the actual conversation. The unfortunate side effect is that those cuts really show up in the video.
That said, we have recently launched a patreon (rather than selling ads) - and one of the goals is to improve video production for our community here!
Because I am a fan and follow MCC, I just discovered The Other 22 Hours podcast today. What a wonderful interview . . . and postscript! I also scrolled through hilights from many of the other interviews you produced this year. What a wonderful service to those actively making a living with their creativity as well as for those of us who follow artists and dabble im creative pursuits because it pleases us. The recurring theme of finding balance, honoring one:s self, and expressing gratitude for those truly in our corner is good advice for anyone. Enjoy your podcast production break and I look forward to following you again when you resume im March.
It absolutely is great advice for anyone. And as Mary Chapin says, in the end, true success is creating things YOU are proud of - and that’s universal. Thank you for being here with us!
Love this! Best conversation I have ever heard with Mary Chapin! Thank you!
That is quite the honor, thank you so much for watching!
Great guest. I've always loved MCC and been a big fan. I"m not a musician and never heard of this podcast and never would have listened otherwise. But you have so much to offer as you have great conversation. I hope you can get some more big names to draw someone like me. Very good content. I found this all very interesting. I wish you much success with what you're doing!
Thanks for taking a chance on the show! If you liked this one, some others that might resonate with you are Ep 16 w/Rodney Crowell, Ep 39 w/ Joe Henry and Ep 43 w/Gretchen Peters
I saw MCC with Shawn Colvin back in October here in PA. Is it me, or does she not look well? The night we saw her, she sat down quite a bit and Shawn did significantly more performing that she did. She is such a sweet person and such an excellent musician and songwriter and I hope that maybe she is just tired from the extensive touring she did in 2023. She is one of my all time favorite artists and hope and pray she is with us for a long, long time...
In our judgement she was sharp, witty, and as well-spoken as ever. 🙏
Looks like she has a Bell's palsy, which makes the right side of her face droop. It isn’t generally a major problem.
Love MCC, thank you for having her on. Her lyrics have helped me get through difficult times. Love hearing her speak and you did an excellent job.
Thank you for watching! Shes a gem.
What a wonderful conversation from all 3 of you! The comments on "mistreatment" ar elatable to any career - I certainly identified with them in my career as an ocologist. Chapin's final ,postscript was especially meaningful. Thank you for a wondeful event to close 2023 out with!!
Thank you for watching!
@@theother22hours ocologists, that bunch.
Mary Chapin Carpenter is my absolute favorite songwriter. Thank you for this interview!
Absolutely our pleasure, thanks for watching!
Wow! Synchronicity or what! Last night I made a list of things I will do to step back and just be as I, in the words of MCC, 'find myself between two choices' to be the old compliant self or the one who knows and protects my own worth. This morning I am writing my thought- dumps and listening to MCC's 'We Travelled so Far' album (love MCC's music and been to many concerts here in the UK). I wanted to learn about what was behind writing the album as so many of the lyrics resonate with life's emotions and how we face them. Amongst the list from the search was this podcast interview with MCC. The interview itself was so refreshing as Michaela, Aaron and MCC shared experiences, emotions, fears and determination, the importance of speaking up and gratitude. Then comes the postscript MCC emailed - the list of things to do to enjoy life, to just be - this pretty much matched the list I had written the night before! The synchronicity of my finding this podcast now, today, compelled me to comment - I don't usually do that sort of thing but in the words of another brilliant MCC song... 'Send it out into the universe' and here's the question...When is the musical 'We Travelled so Far' (to include a storyline incorporating this and more of MCC's brilliant lyrics) going to be written? Just sayin'...'there's nothing like nothing to lose'. x
Thank you for a wonderful interview with MCC... !
Our pleasure, she’s a gem!
That she is ! @@theother22hours
Love this episode! Mary Chapin Carpenter is simply the best. I love her music, lyrics, etc. Have seen her many times in concert, but my favorite was a small intimate concert years ago in Los Angeles with a very small and intimate audience - absolutely beautiful acoustic concert.

Mary is one of my favorite singers and I have all of her albums and I have gone to two concerts once and soaring Eagle Mount Pleasant Michigan and the other was at Ann Arbor Michigan at the state theater. Thank you for being you and such a singer. You inhabit my soul and heart.
This was so informative and truly makes one think about life and where we all should be in it. It boils down to believing in oneself and giving kindness and hope to others. You guys are excellent at what you do. Kudos.
Beautifully said, and thank you for the kind words!
