  • Jerry Corley lists 10 tried & true, scientifically supported ways to avoid and overcome bombing while doing stand-up comedy. These techniques are based on decades of road work, thousands of performances and scientifically backed study in neuroscience, audience psychology and hard knocks. 13:15 Recently, I was in a yearlong residency for a clinical psychology Ph.D. program.
During the final month, a fellow student said to me, "we've all been who we are at heart in this program. I'm a teacher. You've shown that you're a solid stand up."
I replied, "Yeah, I think I've represented stand ups well throughout this thing. We drink a lot, and we tell the truth."
Then it's like.... I'm saying this in a clinical psych program. Yikes. But I could trust her. 🤣

@JerryCorley I hit a mic in a new state for the first time in a long time and wasn’t doing to well. Just before getting off stage I said, “ oh,this is what bombing feels like.” The audience laughed hard… I took it as a big save lol

Regarding point 4 (don't mumble), a great way to catch weak points is to get an AI to transcribe a recording of you doing the bit. AI isn't great at doing transcription, but for this, that's a positive. Watch for where it gets things wrong and focus on those parts and enunciate better to make everything work.

That’s a great idea! You can use Otter.ai or upload the audio to rev.com or temi.com, or upload to CZcams keep it unlisted for privacy and let CZcams auto captioning transcribe it. Then you can see where it’s inaudible or it messes up words. Great idea, thanks!

I gained a great deal from this video. I hope this summary is helpful. Thank you Jerry!
"Top Ways to Deal With a Bad Set" - summary
    1. It's Not About You. You're there to serve your audience. "You guys doing ok?" That's the right focus and it also takes the pressure off when you realize what it's really is all about.
    2. Make sure your jokes are relatable. The audience needs to be able to relate to you. The audience is asking: "Who are you? and why should I care?" "Who are you and why do you behave the way you do? Does your dilemma relate to something I've gone through?" Be sure to start with something relatable.
    3. Share your dilemma - give your audience a reason to root for you, they're on your side (e.g. benign retaliation ... 1 of the 13 joke structures that Jerry Corley teaches in his e-book)
    4. Don't mumble (dropping off the ends of your phrases). Makes it hard for the audience to follow what you are saying and conveys a lack of confidence.
    5. Hammock your jokes: Start and End Strong. Start with your best material (tried and true), new stuff in the middle, more of your best material at the end.
    6. You're a Joke Mechanic: Don't take it so personally - just fix the joke if it doesn't work
    7. Use "Savers" - have funny responses ready for when the audience is not laughing. (Bill Burr: "Why is it so quiet in here?")
    8. Bombing is part of the journey - not that big a deal. We all do it and we're on your side. Take it easy.
    9. Rationalize the Venue - M.A.P. Material - Audience - Performer. So if the open mic is just an audience full of distracted comics (and hardly anyone else) adjust your material. If you have some strong "reverses" you'll get respect. If the venue doesn't do things right ... (for example does not introduce you properly) talk about it with those running it so that it works better next time.
and now best of all ...
    10. a) Develop a personal Mantra. (I am perfect in all my flaws ... own those flaws... show those flaws) Who am I? What do I stand for? What is your mantra? What is my life's philosophy? Figure out your brand. If you know who you are then you will be able to overcome bombing since bombing doesn't define who you are.
    10. b) Look for the universal truths in life in what you are trying to share. "The joke is always hidden in the universal truth of life". (George Carlin)
Have an unwavering understanding of who you are. Know who you are, get up there with confidence. If you don't know who you are how do you think the audience will perceive you? Once you understand that, bombing won't matter so much. You'll fix the joke and go at it again. (you are not determined by external validation)

Amazing! Thanks Jerry this is golden advice. I HIGHLY recommend the book and A la Carte classes Jerry runs. The man knows his craft. I've begun implementing the lessons I've learned and have seen a huge increase in laughter for my sets. Can't recommend enough.

I have kill on open mics
I also had a bad nights
    Just dead silence
Sometimes I have open mics which just go somewhere between.
I am not sure is it the right mindset or not but if I get laughs it works it does not need to be tweak and if it doesn't and I am lazy ass I just throw it out. Thats my system

Hey Jerry. Can you explain the core of compare and contrast and how writing in that structure can heighten a joke. For example, I understand that the triple creates a pattern that is shattered by the punchline. Thanks

    (Nit-picky comment)
this land wasn't stolen, it was conquered. To pretend that natives didn't put up a fight is demeaning to their warrior spirits.

    • @JerryCorley
      @JerryCorley  Před 9 měsíci +2

Good point! 😃 But I’m native and belong to a lot of native groups. Many of the tribes say it was “stolen.”
And really “conquered” is just a way of saying they used force to take something that wasn’t theirs. They were mugged. Their land was stolen. It’s perspective and semantics.
