My homage to ancient Rome. Aetas Romana is Latin and means "the age of Rome".
With this song I tried to create something that takes me back to the time in which Rome was at its peak and stretched from Britannia to Syria over snow-covered plains to scorching deserts. The song itself is not like Illyricum, which was meant to be as traditional as possible. In this song I chose a composing style closer to movie scores, which gives much more room for dramatics and feelings of awe and mystery. The first 4min are actually a different scale than most of the later parts, it starts with an Arabian scale and then transitions into Aeolian minor which is a classic European scale. So in a sense it can be seen as if you'd travel from the East into the centre of the Roman Empire as the song progresses.
All music composed and arranged by Adrian von Ziegler.

    Usage rights - please read:
I’m posting the usage rights and important information about my music right here in a comment on every new video so that they’re easily accessible to everyone. =)
    USAGE:
If your project (any project at all, movie, photography, websites, live shows etc.) is non-commercial, which means it doesn't earn you any money, then you can use my music for free. Only given credits are necessary, that's the only condition. Credits would be totally fine as a small text in the movie, website etc. written "Music by Adrian von Ziegler". In live shows and other projects where including a text would be difficult, an oral mention would suffice as well. =)
On CZcams and twitch you can also use my music for free even if you monetize your videos by the way!
ANY school projects have automatic free permission to use my music, no license payment is required.
If the project is commercial, meaning it makes money in any way (except CZcams and twitch, see above), you would have to buy a license for the music you want to use. The license payment would be small in almost all cases except for big budget productions. It would be a one-time payment, so you can use the music you bought forever in that project. It does not give you any rights over the music however, so remixing the music, re-selling it etc. is not allowed.
Giving credits is also necessary in commercial projects.
Please note that "for free" only applies to the usage license. Music is my full-time job and is where 100% of my earnings come from. So no matter what you use my music for, whether it's commercial or non-commercial use, I appreciate that you purchase the music instead of downloading it for free. Many people misunderstand this part so I need to clear this up. I love making music, but if everyone would just get it for free I would not be able to pay rent, so please understand. It was always my dream to make enough money to survive with music being my only job, and that is only possible because of people who go and buy that music.
Remixing, sampling and other forms of altering the original song into a new piece of music is also generally not allowed unless the remix is 100% non-commercial and labelled with the original title and author of the song (me). Adding bird noises, nature sounds or similar things are allowed. Nightcore alterations are also allowed while non-commercial and labelled with original title and author (Google "Nightcore" in case of confusion).
So if your project is non-commercial or a CZcams project, just give credits and there is nothing holding you back from using my songs. ANY song you want. =) If it's commercial stuff just write me a personal message or an email at adrianvonziegler@gmx.ch and inform me about the scale and details of the project and we'll make a deal.
    REQUESTED MUSIC:
I have recently made a very good experience with collaborating with other artists and am now - carefully - open to requests. Please note before sending me a request that any agreement will have to assure me a high level of control and independence over the composing process and certain copy- and intellectual rights over any composition that has been created on request (this entails for example that I can still upload and sell any music that I composed for a given project).
    Important:
I do not allow my music to be used in any project that has a clear political, racist or discriminatory message or is pornographic. By that I mean anything that goes from direct political, racist or discriminatory videos or underlining speeches with my music, onto remixing my melodies into a song that has lyrics with clear political, racist or discriminatory message and similar things that clearly promote these things. Same goes for explicit pornography. Media with nude art is allowed, if not pornographic in nature and purpose.
I hope you're having an awesome day, and thanks a lot for being interested in my music! =)

Arminius was born in what is today known as Germany as the child of a tribe leader. He was brought to Rome as hostage. He grew up in the Roman empire under the house of a noble, he became a member of the Roman military and officer even. However when Arminius returned to Germania he actually switched sides and caused one of the most devastating Roman defeats as he managed to get most of the Tribes to fight the Roman army advancing into enemy teritory.
I guess not everyone was so much in to the Romans and their lifestyle I would say a lot of them understood what the Roman architecture meant. Domination. Superiority. Submission of other cultures. This is something thats been probably somewhat common as well. Maybe even more often than any admiration. Many despised the Romans and also their Empire.

Most hated what the empire currently was and missed what it had been at its best.

Well I think that the Roman Empire, or the roman customs and laws still live with us today anyway, we are using their words... Most of the "post-roman" history has seen attempts to get it back in a way. Like the "Middle-Ages" were just a long shadow of the Roman era, as they still looked for Rome and then the reginition of interest in ancient authors and texts, the ideas of enlightement or later 19th century were in many ways mentally returning to the "roman ideal"... not to talk about Mussolini's dream to truly renew the empire in the 20th century... And in this light, we in the West ARE roman empire to this very day ✌😊

@Priester Thank you for your kind reply. Nah, mate, I am not a jesuit, what brought you to this idea? I met only one jesuit in my whole life when I was attending lectures on the philosophy of history (Geschichtsphilosophie), he was the teacher and was kinda crazy. So not really fond of them right now 😁😬
And one thing to the Roman Empire: the "barbarised" western roman empire, the "Holy Roman Empire" lasted until 1806 when it was disbanded by Napoleon. So if we take this into consideration, "the Roman Empire" ended only 200 years ago as an institution. But as you said, the institutions and goverments live on with their roman heritage. Even the symbol I have on my profile picture is christian, yet deeply roman. And it lives on... And there's one institution that also survived... the Roman Catholic Church, as the Pope is still being the "pontifex maximus" in 2020.
By the way, to anyone else reading it wanting to know more, Jacques Le Goff has a great (very thicc) book "Medieval Civilisation" (La Civilisation de l'Occident médiéval) and the first chapter tells a lot about this.

I think my personal favorite daydream about Rome is how it was more or less made for durability and resiliency. Concrete we’re still trying to truly mimic that was made stronger with age instead of weaker, holding together buildings made of stone and brick. How many generations walked down a street and it was the exact same way as their great grandparents saw at the same age, with a century between them.
We so often call new and different the magical one but I seriously find that to be just as magical. Real, tangible heritage used everyday just beside innovation and change. Makes it that people themselves are the obvious change instead of their surroundings and things.

I heard somewhere that, during the high middle ages (~1300s), people sometimes deconstructed buildings built during the height of the roman empire (~200s) for their easy-to-access stonework. The fascinating thing is that the mortar used to hold these roman buildings together was so slow-setting that even during the high middle ages, the mortar flowed and had the same consistency as newly produced medieval mortar, and so was often reused. I'm not sure if this is actually true, though the idea of the romans using mortar that outlasted their empire seems fascinating.

Amazing place to be in the ancient world. Vibrant and full of technological wonders that had been lost after the collapse of the Empire. Low-class peasants living in vast apartment and shared-housing, while the middle-class and upper-class peasants were living in their own villas or buildings within cities.
Had the same issues as any other major population centre; slums, violence, disease.
But, even with all that, it was still a sight to behold. Vast wooden structures among the lower-class or servants. Villas of concrete and stone among the middle and upper class. Nothing like the dull colours often portrayed in films and books, but vibrant in various shades of colour for the materials, and the art depicted on and within buildings.

On our donkeys, we took everything we possessed and started the long trip to Rome. From Jerusalem, we believed in Jesus and of his message so we began our travels to spread the message across the empire. As we began our journey, I thought honored that I'd go on a pilgrimage to spread Christianity throughout the empire. As we kept riding, even through Anatolia, we left the deserts behind eventually and entered the Baltics. We went through and converted people along the way, but most people rejected our message, then one day ... we saw them. A Roman patrol found us. I am writing to my loved ones or whoever will find this.

All Roman music was lost to the dark ages, yet scholars believe that they were as sophisticated as modern symphonies! I like to think they may have sounded like this!

That’s not entirely true, Roman music survived and evolved over the centuries with the Roman Empire up to its fall in 1452 or 1453.

Thus that is where Romania gets it's name from Romanus meaning citizens of Rome! Română translate as Romanian in the Romanian language from Romana just have to drop the i between n and a. Romana in Latin means Roman in which they would refer themselves as Romanian in case you didn't know.

I get serious Black & White (game) and Assasin's Creed: Odyssey vibes from this music. I'm always fascinated by the Roman civilization. Can you imagine that in the world of primal barbarians there was this highly developed superior culture? Yes, the Romans were greedy, merciless and cruel towards the bordering tribes but you cannot deny their supremacy in every aspect. I would love to live as a patrician during the peak of the Roman civilization.
