My father was a science fiction fan, and took me to see this film in the theater when I was nine. Two years later we went to see 2001, A Space Odyssey, and the year after that was the first moon landing. What a time to be growing up!
What a great Dad, taking his boy to all those fun things..
In spite of the war in Vietnam, there was a prevailing sense of hope. Science fiction was very popular. EVERYONE talked about 2001 and those movie posters were BIG and on every street corner.
man, you must be old.
I was nine also
Sensational film and it won 2 academy awards for 1966, stellar acting, great story and incredible special effects!!!!!
Loved how the evil Donald Pleasance character got taken out by Mr. Bubble.
It scared the crap out of me, I remember screaming during that scene
Was, stunned and delighted as the movie entered the Body. Never imagined any thing like that happening.
Had to sit through the whole Movie again. Such a great movie at the time. And amazed at all the dangers coming from the body it's self!
My mom took me to the drive-in to see this & One Million BC double feature. Was 10 or 11. Loved them both.
I well remember sitting with my family in our station wagon at the local driven-in theater one warm summer evening in 1966 to watch this movie. I was eleven years old and mesmerized by it. I also recall reading a big magazine write-up on it at the time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I was 10 when I saw it at the theater as well, and it started my lifelong love of Science Fiction.
Same here, eleven years old watching it at the drive-in with my family. I read the book before the movie came out, but I hadn't realized the book was based on the screenplay. Anything science-fiction related, I liked it.
This movie is simply a fantastic voyage from start to finish👍
It was a great film in it,s time , very mind blowing , and it still is and please , no remakes .
Why not a remake or sequel like they did with Alien and Terminator and Star Trek?
I wish they had made a sequel of fantastic voyage with the original cast while they were still all alive.
I bet it would have been great.
The two comedies that were made, Honey I Shrunk the Kids with Rick Moranis and Innerspace with Dennis Quaid were entertaining but I would still have liked to see a more serious movie. Maybe we'll see one someday.
During the 70s. Mission Impossible creator Bruce Geller had a screenplay for a Fantastic Voyage tv pilot but Geller died I an airplane crash in which he had the script with him.
I read the book in 1966, before I saw the film (I was 13). Asimov went to a lot of trouble to smooth out some of the problems inherent in the story. Miniaturization (in the film) is only possible for a very emphatic 60 minutes. No explanation for the tidy duration. Asimov explains that the degree of miniaturization affects the duration - the smaller you go the less time you have, which makes a little more sense. At the end of the story the 'Proteus' is destroyed inside Benes's skull by a white blood cell. The enlarging submarine matter would have destroyed the patient - a minor problem there. Asimov has the crew lure the blood cell to exit with them out the tear duct. In any case, the film is good fun with great production values for the mid '60s. I loved it, even while being aware of the many various logic holes Asimov valiantly tried to deal with. Good review, Jonny, thank you.
I loved that novel even more than the movie. I still have the first-edition hardcover on my bookshelf!
The cartoon Archer had an episode along the same theme. However this one ended with the submarine enlarging while still in the human body. What a mess.
That's a very good point....giant submarine exploding his head.
I think I read the novel before I saw the movie, but it was when I was a kid so I don't remember for sure.
I read the book years later after the movie and liked it alot. Leaving the proteus in the head I agree was a big plot problem but I never realized the book came after.
In 1966 i was 11. Every saturday you would find me and sis enjoying our favorite theaters 2:00 matinee. Movies were so much better than the sick garbage which sadly passes for movies today. Back then we kids had the best of both worlds hollywood had to offer. Recall a movie called time travelers 64 which I truly loved, and H.G Wells "The Time Machine!" just to name a few. Watching this flick for the first time, felt like i was there in that same sub with this all adult crew. Best movie ever made with we kids in mind......
The journey through the body’s blood stream is still thrilling to watch after all these years. Amazing special effects years ahead of their time.
It needed more CGI.
Stroheim333 that’s nice dear
@@Lumibear. Not at all, my dear simpleminded-nerd-who-doesn't-understand-sarcasm. Mate.
Stroheim333 that’s nice dear, keep trying.
@@Lumibear. Yes, probably I need to. It is not easy for you, but in the end you understand!
Great film, and a terrific music score .. I’m very happy to have the soundtrack on my iPhone.
This movie was highly imaginative. Realistic special affects without CGI.
@F P Now now...be nice.
If CGI had existed in 1966, you can rest assured there would have been plenty in it.
I remember seeing this movie in 1971 on TV, and the scene where the submarine was shrunk blew me away... amazing...
I remember watching this movie in my youth. Great plot and effects.
A very enjoyable sci-fi cult classic from the sixties... This movie was relevant for inspiring people to become doctors, scientists & engineers. It’s one of my favorites. Good story & well acted by all.
I seen this movie as a kid because my father and all my uncle's were sci fi fans and remembered loving it. I recently watched bit as an adult ( 30 years later ) and I have to say it really holds up. When the Dr explained how the ship can be destroyed by antibodies....it really shows the writers did their homework. What a GREAT film.
I already know the title if they remake this classic film. _"Fantastic CGI"._
Yes, CGI can NEVER look good or real. Said the simpleminded nerd.
@@Stroheim333 I think the man was pointing out that the moviemakers who made those special effects happen without the advantage of CGI showed more genuine creative ability than someone who can program what they want into a computer. Their achievement is more impressive even if it is possible to get a better final result by "cheating". Intelligent planning is always more respectable than, say, snotty replies from dolts who wouldn't be caught dead attempting a difficult task without their electronic crutches. How sad that so many folks today look down on people BECAUSE they can add two and two without a machine to do it for them.
@@kevinhurd4258 Dear, if you wasn't simpleminded and full of prejudices, you should know that FXs today usually are a combination of practical effects and CGI. You should also be aware of a a very obvious, fundamental and irrational fact: That you only hate CGI when you chose to hate it. Guillermo Del Toro, for example, love CGI and movie fans love his movies, and nobody even _mentions_ CGI when they talk about them. You are not rational or intelligent in your hate, period.
@@Stroheim333 wake up, CGI is killing movies, it looks too cartoonish. Physical effects were much more believable because you had real artists and technical talented crews working in films , NOT a keyboard doing all the work.
I saw this in the theatre when I was a kid. Loved it so much I went back the next day. Raquel was gorgeous in this one,she only got better!😍😍😍
Love this movie! Great video, Jonny!
Thanks so much
I was 10 years old when saw this movie .. I was really impressed by it ..I also fall in love with Raquel Welch . !Fantastic movie !!! it deserves a modern remake !!!
JonnyBaak. Hello and good morning. Now do you remember any of the old American and British TV shows from the 50's and 60's? Well here are just a few. Dragnet, Lassie, The Littlest Hobo, Wagon Train, Hazel, Sing along with Mitch Miller, Stop the music, The Adventures of Sir Lancelot ( British ), Buccaneers ( British ) Circus Time, Circus Boy, Ivanhoe ( British ), Bus Stop, Scotland Yard ( British ), The big record, Inspector Morley of Scotland Yard ( British ), Police Station, Calling all Cars, Baby Peggy and Two of my Favorite 50'S and 60'S British TV shows, Emergency Ward 10 and The Adventures of P.C. 49. These were all some great Family TV shows that we all enjoyed watching together as a Family. And let's not forget, Mandrake The Magician, Bozo The Clown, The Soupy Sales show, The Man From Interpol ( British ) and Interpol Calling ( British ). God Bless.
Asimov's original novelisation is actually a good read, complete with a supplement explaining all the medical know-how. I know at least one school friend who wanted to study medicine after seeing the film. I guess Raquel Welch was a big draw at the time. Donald Pleasence, as always, is magnificent as the treacherous blood specialist.
Wow, never know Fox Studios paid attention to an episode of Astroboy --not surprised , Astroboy was very popular at that time on NBC tv.
what episode of astroboy are you referring to????
One of my favorite movies as a kid! I would watch it every time it was on 📺.
Rachel Welch=👍
Reboot?
I totally forgot about the animated series but when the stills were shown I recognized it immediately!
I remember the classic MAD magazine parody a lot more vividly than I do the actual movie.
"I'm new here! What does LS/MFT stand for?"
"Laboratory Sector for Making Folks Tiny!"
FantastECCH Voyage!
Very good 60's movie. Saw it when I was 10yrs old. And of course having Raquel in it did not hurt my eyes at all!
I liked the way the Laser gun was large so that it could contain a high energy density battery. Hand held laser guns ( that are any good) may never be possible but laser rifles maybe.
Perhaps a high energy density battery that's used to charge a super capacitor for powerful shots lasting a few seconds maybe achievable.
It also inspired a video game on rails shooter called Microcosm released in 1993 by Psygnosis which had a similar story, but was set in 2051 AD on an alien planet instead of earth.
It's a fantastic movie and I vividly remember Mrs. Neil, one of my teachers, reading the book to us chapter by chapter, right after lunch recess back in the 60's
Own the book, the movie, and model of the proteus
Me too! SFMA, Lunar Models, and Moebius model kits of the Proteus. And the book, and the Gold Key comic book. Plus some patches.
And of course, the miniature of Rachel Welch’s char! ;-)
Congratulations
Great featurette. Let me add a little more. Was lucky enough to live in Los Angeles when the movie was in post-production. Litton Savings and Loan on Sunset had a huge space under its parking lot called "The Litton Center of the Visual Arts" and for several weeks they devoted the entire space to "Fantastic Voyage." They had a small Proteus model, plus some of the brain set as well as the fiberglass arteries. Somewhere I have an old Polaroid of me standing in the heart. They also had some of the footage of the Proteus going through the body and people swimming through the brain. Absolutely loved it and visited it several times. Still have the poster and a program. Also, you should mention that although the film ends rather abruptly when the crew comes out, there was actually a scene after shot where it turns out Benes' fate is still uncertain. Prehaps it was to set up a sequel, but it was never explained why the scene was cut.
Thanks for sharing
Like everything else, in movies you’re not gonna please everybody. Some want a definite answer at the end. Some want to leave it to the imagination. Me, I’ve got several ideas-including one that involves a gaseous bullfrog and the Empire State Building.
I've only seen the movie, "Fantastic Voyage," once--back in 1966--at the threatre. However, I still remember parts of it vividly. So it made a great impression and would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.
Remember this one. Fantastic film. Thanks for sharing man! T.
One of my favorite movies. I remember seeing it in the theater.
Brilliant Johnathan, thank you.👍
Good movie. I know someone who was at medical school, who wanted to watch this movie. I had the DVD.
Okay, I'm one of the people who thought the movie was based on the book from Isaac Asimov. Surprised to find out it was the other way around.
One of my fav sci fi movies when growing up.
always fascinating to hear the history of movies!!
Thank you for your work, one of my favourite sci-fi movie, I was afraid about the slimy thing’s
This science fiction film is a joy to watch, so entertaining.
Was a great movie. I remember going to see it on the "Big Screen" back in 1967 (I was maybe 8 or 9 y/o). Just saw it on TV not long ago. What really appealed to me, was showing the very lovely Raquel Welch as a Technician , and not a Bit T#$ Bimbo. Really showed how good an actress she was. The special effects were and are great. Just found the book on AMAZON and been reading it. Great story and the book gives some background on why it was so important to try and save the patient. Let you read the book to find that out. And, I remember the "Life Magazine" write up. Wish I still had it. Thanks for doing this movie.
Fantastic stuff
I too thought that Asimov wrote the story first. Another great video. Thx
9:26 is that Nicolas Cage....LOL!!!
2:05 Interesting that he'd use the term "inner space" since this movie inspired 'Innerspace' which is its '80s counterpart without being a remake or reboot.
3:20 Of course, a US soldier has to be depicted with his helmet strap unfastened. That's practically a trope.
4:00 What wasn't inspired by anime?! So this means Astroboy inspired Fantastic Voyage which inspired Innerspace which inspired the video game Microcosm (which might have also drawn inspirado from Innerspace).
9:41 That would explain where Microcosm gets its title. That would also indicate that it's likely more inspired by Fantastic Voyage than Innerspace.
9:58 Definitely drawing inspirado from 'Jonny Quest'.
Hi thank you very much it help me in life.
They used to show this movie all the time on the afternoon and weekends in the 70s and I saw it several times. I enjoyed it, but there were parts that terrified me as a little kid.
I can relate. My first viewing of this film was on TV in the mid 1970's, probably on ABC-TV's daily "The 4;30 Movie" (after the soaps and before the evening news in NY) ... it had kids like me riveted to our televisions with its suspense and wonder.
Ah, yes! The Proteus! Designed by Harper Goff, who designed the Nautilus for "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Both designs were ingenious nautical craft that looked so realistic, one may imagine that they actually existed! I never cared for the cartoon series' characters or the 'submarine' that bore a stronger resemblance to a jet-propelled aircraft...
this movie was simply Fantastic! I've always loved it! I liked the Filmation Cartoon as well although the ship was different. But this movie has always been a favorite of mine.
I remember the cartoon more than I remember the movie. I did enjoy the movie.
*This* would be awesome idea for a reboot.
This is one of those movies that shaped history.
I won a ticket to see a preview screening of the movie at 20th Century Fox studios. I was ten. I sat in the front row but moved when they started to inject the sub. That was too much for a kid my age. However, I loved the movie. A few years ago, I found a company on eBay that sold a hand carved replica of the Proteus and I had to have it.
Thank You Its My Favorite Sci-Fi Movie.......
Great movie. I even built a Proteus model. I guess the little 5 inch Proteus model in the movie was carried off by a bird! It is mentioned in the bonus material in the DVD.
One of the first movies to have real time suspense!
As a very young boy, I could not wait until the weekend because I would be going to see this film. Then, on Friday afternoon, one of my teachers spent the entire class telling us about the entire film.
I was entirely devastated and it ruined the entire film for me.
Today it would be called a spoiler alert.
Wow, that is a shame. I can only begin to imagine your feelings at the time. But the teacher must have been extremely inspired and thrilled by this movie, to actually spend the entire period talking about it. At least that's a good thing. Still, you must have been so crestfallen. The stings of childhood, huh? Do you watch the movie now, or did that past experience sour the whole movie completely-- without the desire to revisit it?
I saw this at the El Portial in North Hollywood. It was in the 60's when California was Republican.
Come along and ride on a Fantastic Voyage!
I'm the Captain of this vessel,
We want to take you on a cruise, ya.
All around the land, music is at hand.
We want to play it for you!
Anti Body and the Amazing Dancing Corpsuckles!!!
I saw Fantastic Voyage and 1 Million Years BC as a double feature at a drive-in when I was kid! Couldn't get enough of Raquel Welch!!! I loved FV, still do! The Filmation animated series was garbage!!
Miss Welch....hubba hubba !
This was great thank you. I just wish you touch on the characters in the movie a bit. The cartoon yes I remember it , born in 68. Now I got to watch it lol. Over all this was great thank you
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Harper Goff was probably the designer of Body Wars for EPCOT
Center since he was one of the original designers of Disneyland and a close friend of Walt's.
I thought the "Proteus" was a really futuristic looking submarine...
Love your channel. New subscriber here.
A FANTASTIC movie, Jonny! Great pick to do!
By the way - Fantastic Voyage II was TERRIBLE! Don't even bother to read it. Kinda disappointing, for Issac Asimov.
I remember watching the movie on TV because I missed it when it was released the theater. The same thing goes for 1,000,000 Years B.C. I'm SURE these were the reasons I ALWAYS thought of Raquel Welch as my ultimate fantasy woman.
I had a poster on my bedroom wall of Raquel wearing a skimpy loincloth with skimpy top from 10,000 BC flick
Loved this movie, but never I understood why the sub didn't revert to full size.
I always wondered that myself. In the novelization, they knew that the sub's molecules (and the dead body inside), would return to normal size also, so they had to stab at the corpuscle with knives to get it to follow them to the extraction point, sub included. When they were extracted and returned to normal size, the sub was in a crushed state. Hate to think what Dr. Michaels' body looked like!
Wasn't it digested by the antibodies that attacked and killed Donald Pleasance?
@@raymondkizer1216 - In the book, no. Even if the sub was completely digested, it's molecules would still return to normal size, killing Benes. The book thought things through a bit more than the movie did.
I mentioned it somewhere else. The cartoon Archer had an episode of the same premise. It ended with the submarine enlarging inside the human body. Messy.
Raquel in a wetsuit ... nuf said
As much as i still love this film they never explained what happened to the ship or the man left behind
Thanks for a nice video celebrating a great sci-fi. Watching this as a child I was terrified of being eaten by giant white blood cells.
You forgot the Dr. Who arc influenced by the film with The Invisible Enemy. And would include the Lost in Space episode "Trip Through the Robot"?
scenes of that ship in the matrix series of movies always reminds me of fantastic voyage
The killing of the ant with his thumb, ( nasty)..
General Carter didn’t do it. Colonel Reid said, “You’ll wind up a Hindu. They respect all forms of life, however small.”
This one needs a good remake. I love it but I think they could exploit the strange land that is the human body in a different way these days.
Sería posible adquirir este,DVD de 1966 viaje fantástico
I like the old movies
Excellent special effects and a nice rack on Raquel. My dad love this movie
A fantastic movie from a back then fantastic Micky Mouse free movie Studio RIP FOX
For years, I'm waiting for the promised remake. Nothing happens.
100Singers you can’t copy art.
The thing I want to know is did Ms. Welch’s rebreather work?
THIS would make a kick ass game, if done right.
The animated stills look like Johnny quest on antibodies.
You would think the movie would of been a big hit but in those years where it came out sci-fi wasn't cool and most of it that existed was very campy. I believe that all changed when Star Trek came out for the first time on television. I know I was really wow'd when it did as there really wasn't anything like it at the time. I didn't see FV until years later sadly but I've always loved it. I don't believe Stephen Boyd lived that long after the movie if I remember right but he was very good in it and other movies like Ben Hur.
The only gripe I had with the movie was all the "God talk". God this...God that... It seriously had me rolling my eyes.
Faith was a central attribute of Dr. Duval's character. Sorry that you prefer no-dimensional robots in your entertainment. I like my humans to be human.
@Teddygalbis - Uh huh...And then these "Atheist" scientists wouldn't be atheists then, would they?
Not familiar with Meyer but, could you give me some quotes or citations where these atheist scientists all of the sudden confess to a creator god?
@@colormedubious4747 - Sorry for hurting your feelings.
@@Orlor You're not and you didn't.

Great stuff! One of my favourite movies that had to have an Englishman as the bad guy. Oh well, Americans.
Slight divergence for you, but have you seen Twelve Angry Men?
The first things Donald Pleasance did here in the states were episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE and THE OUTER LIMITS. I guess he got typecast.
@@jackgrattan1447 I can't argue. Disney had a go at him too. "Escape to witch mountain" 1975.
Edit:
Not to mention THX-1138.
Why not mention the names of the key effects people?---at very least the name of the Oscar winner for visual effects on the film? I have Jerome Bixby's original script and drawings here, and he, not Otto Klement, is the one who deserves the major credit for the original version. Klement was Bixby's agent and friend at the time, and Jerry would often give his friend more creative credit than appropriate, truth be told. This was a truly unique idea at the time, far above and beyond most of the filmed SF at the time from a purely imagination standpoint...in my opinion. But thanks for covering this film. I didn't know some of this stuff. :-)
Harper Goff designed my two fave movie submarines: _Nautilus_ & _Proteus._
RocKITEman _ 2001 AMEN, brother, AMEN!!
No mention of the great Donald Pleasence?
Another great movie that, if re-made, would be awful... :)
It kinda has already.
David - Hmmm... Innerspace (1987)? I guess one could sort of call it a remake. I remember a cartoon, I think it was called "CMDF"... :)
@@DaveLennonCopeland yeah innerspace. Fun to watch too
@@DaveLennonCopeland "Innerspace" was a fun bit of entertainment.
Martin Short at his grocery cash register: "I'm possessed!!"
Eduardo Corrochio - Yes, I agree... I must say thought, as an Englishman, I do find American (USA) humour a bit odd or rather different, but Innerspace was very entertaining indeed... :)
7:15 "First Season Episode" of I Dream of Jeannie ? Those episodes were in black & white.
The Disney ride would become "Monsanto's Adventure thru Inner Space" and was both fun & popular, lasting over 18 years.
The first season episodes of Jeannie have been colorized.
@@outsider238 If this is an example they did a heck of a good job. Thank you.
There was to be a remake of Fantastic Voyage, what ever became of that?
one flaw in the story...they left the sub inside the guy. impossible for antibodies to destroy it to the molecular level, so the poor sap had sub parts pushing through his brain.
The sets were also reused in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea S02E01 Jonah and the Whale (also by 20th Century Fox) czcams.com/video/cxqRQdkx6W4/video.html
PLEASE DO INNERSPACE 1987

Donald’s death by corpuscle sort of traumatized this then 5 year old . He was a bad guy but jeez?!
