The mutants abilities to create illusions is a concept deservedly equal to 'discovering' a planet of apes. Even the makeup of their radiation ravaged flesh compares on the level of the apes makeup. But the ultimate 'zinger' is the worship of 'The Almighty Bomb'. Sometimes critics and fans treat sequels as remakes and compare them to the original. If there had to be sequel to Planet, Beneath was the best sequel that could have been made. Even the producers themselves said to justify a sequel they had to do something entirely strange and bizarre and go off into another direction. They certainly did, and if Beneath had failed at the box office, we would not have the Apes franchise today.

I love Beneath The Planet Of The Apes, it’s a worthy sequel to the original. I loved the insight to what they were going to originally do with the sequel and I’ve see pictures of the “ape boy” in the past but people weren’t ready for that. I’ve like to have seen Taylor survive with Brent and Nova and lead a revolt against the Apes with the help of the mutants. But you would lose that iconic ending that would lead to the next three movies. Maybe they’ll do something like that if they make any more Apes movies.

James Gregory with his facial mannerisms, speech pattern, and breathing was fantastic. He spoke with pauses as if what he is saying is extremely meaningful, even though it is a rather plain, juvenile choice of words he uses, an elementary level vocabulary, the militant Ursus is one of the most memorable, best characters in motion picture history, IMO. He played the role very well. His bravado is so audacious, it is comical at times, yet scary, and very entertaining to watch. He's the real stand out in this movie. That's how it works with most sequels. They figure it's pre-sold, so why spend a lot of money on it?

One plot device that had to be altered from the first film was how Brent arrived on future Earth. In the first film, Taylor and his crew flew through space at near-light speed in which time dilation allowed them to age slightly over the two thousand years it took for them to return to Earth. In the sequel, Brent's ship simply passed through a time warp/bend of some kind. This had to be done because if Brent's ship had taken the same course as Taylor's and, allowing for time dilation, then by the time Brent arrived on Earth, Taylor, Zira, Zaius and cast would have been dead for many centuries.

  • @thevfxmancolorizationvfxex4051

When I first saw Beneath, I was immensely blown away. For every silly mutant makeup, and James Franciscus' performance as a bootleg Charlton Heston (why they didn't recast him as Taylor since Heston didn't even want to return in the first place is beyond me), the visuals were stunning, and moments like the statue of the lawgiver bleeding and then exploding are just chilling to the bone. Plus, POTA were killing off it's main characters long before Infinity War did

If they recasted Taylor’s actor the film would loose legitimacy… it wouldn’t feel like your watching the same story bc the main star of the original film would be missing. Hestons presence in this movie was enough to solidify this as a legitimate sequel. Made these sequels valid. that’s why

I still remember how I felt when I saw that ending. Don't get me wrong, Beneath had a gloriously epic dark ending but that sight of the destroyed statue of liberty may be the greatest movie ending of all time. The only one I can think of that stands a chance against it is the ending of Empire Strikes Back.

Cool shot of the spaceship at 1:49 . In 1996, I was on a road trip thru the southwest, and ended up in the area where it had crashed into the lake. I thought it looked eerily familiar at the time, but it wasn't until I saw the film again a few years later, that I realized where I had been.

Franciscus infused Brent with so much life as oppose to Heston's Taylor. That scene in the bomb chamber after Taylor is shot and Brent is taking out as many apes as he can has always been a favourite of mine. He's fighting right up till the end when he dies a bad ass. The scene between Zaius and Taylor was the denouement to their story and fitting to take us into "Escape." Thanks for the video. This film doesn't get the love it should.

    What I wanna know is...
How was Heston able to tip off Cornelius and Zira about his intent to blow up the entire ape planet, with enough time for them to rescue his spaceship from the bottom of the lake and figure out how to repair it, and then fly it back to the 1970s?
How were Cornelius and Zira even able to perform any of those tasks when they belonged to a primitive society that didn't even have cars, let alone spaceships?
    It makes no sense.

What's best about the entire Apes film series are the messages contained within. After recently watching the entire run with my wife (who shame on me had never seen any of them) the latter 3 films, Escape / Conquest and Battle establish some interesting ideas about humanity and how we might deal with such an uprising. Sadly I feel we would treat the Apes in a similar fashion making them pets and servants following a disease that wiped out cats and dogs. Not to mention the government interference and arrogance on full display. But this is what the best science fiction does. Allows us to insert aspects of real life events into futuristic films. Apes and Star Trek TOS provided this opportunity very well.

That said, I remember watching the ending as a kid and still thinking to myself, “A bomb that could blow up the whole earth? How is that even possible?” You don’t have to even be a science nut to know that that’s just over the top even for fiction (so is the Death Star too-sorry). It never took away from my overall enjoyment (and rating) of the movie at all. But if I had to nitpick just one tiny plot device in the story, the planet destroying bomb would probably be it.

It was a decent sequel despite the budget cuts. I don't think it would have done well if Chuck didn't reprise his role albeit briefly. The possible stories before it was made seem interesting as well. The following films breathed new life with other stories, I wonder if there were other possible stories that might have been different from the next 3 films. Overall a great franchise. I had some of the Mego action figures. I own the VHS remastered 5 films as well as the DVD of the short lived action series and remember watching the cartoon as a boy. The 2000's movies brought it back to life. I really had wondered after the Tim Burton film if a sequel could have been made, it left you wondering with the ending similar to the original.

All I can say that the film's storyline had interesting concepts and characters but it was NOT at all perfect because of the limited budget of 1970 at the time. So in the final analysis, the first sequel to "Planet of the Apes" was a good, though not great, movie. It helped solidify my status as a BIG FAN of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise for a long time.

I never bought the whole "rescue mission" idea of the 2nd movie's story. They knew they would NEVER be coming back to Earth in their lifetimes due to the near light speed travel; Taylor says so in the first 5 minutes of the first movie. There was no plan for them to go backwards in time. He clearly said "near light speed", but you need to go beyond light speed to travel backwards in time (even in fiction).

Hate to pop a balloon here but that famous ending was "borrowed" from a sf magazine published in Oct. 1941. In the book "The Science in Science Fiction" by Peter Nicholls, the author clearly shows an illustration from the magazine showing two primitive figures in loinclothes encountering the ruins of Lady Liberty. It was about this time that a young Rod Serling was pouring over such magazines. I'm not slighting Rod Serling as a writer but it just goes to prove that even the best have to "borrow" from other sources once in a while.
