This is my review for Olympus 2207, a Fallout 2 total conversion mod that released an English translation not too long ago. This is the latest edition to my series analyzing as many major Fallout mods as I can before my ambition overcomes me and I decompose, locked away in a tomb by my loved ones, forever haunting those who don't give these criminally underlooked projects a chance. I absolutely love how the devs attempted to recreate the original "clay-like CGI" of the old games. From the talking heads, to the cinematics and cutscenes. My jaw literally dropped the first time we saw the titular city
That’s not “clay-like” my guy, the talking heads are literally claymation put together by an artist for the game.

@@antipsychotic451 The actual power armor what you can get in the mod is not ripped from stalker though, only the Tartarus guard sprite look like the exoskeleton from stalker.

Honestly I kinda like how the olympus tower is running, the tower administrator stopped caring about the tower, and in the absence of an over-arching controlling force to rein in the occupants, everything went to pot internally

The way you descibe it, it sounds like a alternate/parallel universe more than anything else.
I kow this sound dumb but hear me out, you know how the Undertale fandom has like 1000 different subcultures based around alternate universes and timelines that somehow flip the story of Undertale on its head? Olympus looks like what would happen if something similar to that existed for Fallout.

I like how the power armor in the game is just ripped from the exosuits in stalker
the russians are notorious for stealing "Ukrainian" culture and lore and presenting to the world as "their own inventions".
Just the Tartarus guards, the other one is original.
It isn't exactly ripped, this mod was supposed to be fallout-stalker crossover but the idea was scrapped during development, thats why those particular armors were used in the mod

I had an idea back in the day similar to the ongoing conflict between the US and Chinese Ghouls.
My idea was a Chinese Submarine you could find hidden deep underwater (like an Easter egg, no marked quest to find it).
The sub would have Chinese ghouls who think the war is still going on (this makes more sense than in this mod due to their isolation)
After fixing their submarine you could either convince them that the war is over and they surface and depart on land or you can have launch a nuke on the target of your choice (you "have the updates US target coordinates"you tell them).
Or kill them all from the get go of course and get a Chinese naval officer uniform.

I suspect the usage based skill system is a nod to Fallout's forebearer - Wasteland. Back in 87, when it came out, it was a very novel feature.

criminally underrated channel
Some guy on NMA claimed that you can defeat the final boss non-violently if you have very high Speech, but I tried editing my save file and nothing seemed to work. Also I think some endings may be bugged - I did the quests fertilizer quests at the metro station, but I could only get the ending where everyone leaves eventually. My guess is it's dependent on the Karma, if that's the case then it's plain stupid.

I have to play this someday. Played Fallout 1.5 Resurrection and some other total conversion before and I really enjoyed both of them.
Btw. to play these older titles with high resolution monitors, it could be good idea to use apps like Lossless Scaling (on Steam). It'll enable you to use lower res like 720p or 1080p internally and do a (higher quality than normal) scale up to 1440p or 4k. With lower internal res everything wouldn't be incredibly tiny.
I've got a few comments on my other videos about the zoomed-out view, and I find it's mostly a preference thing. I've found that the originally intended scaling is (for me) really claustrophobic. I like seeing everything. That's a good tip though, i'll try that and see if that changes my opinion. Thank you!

I was wondering if you were going to address "borrowed" assets. It's not a deal breaker for me, but seeing the armor of guards from the beginning, which is exoskeleton armor from Stalker series was a bit odd. I also think they used skeleton from Oblivion at one point.
I know creating new stuff is not easy, even so with limited or no budget, but for an ambitious project like this looks a bit wrong.
I'm not a big stalker guy, i had no idea! Thanks for letting me know though. Asset usage usually isn't a big issue for me in mods because the mod author makes no profit off of it. As long as the assets are taken from games and not other mods, i'm able to mostly overlook it
Considering this is a mod I don't see any issue with that at all. There are way worse things you could go after this mod author for, if you were so inclined.
I collaborated with a bunch of dedicated fans and linguists on translating this mod into Polish based on the English version. I was responsible for dialog in the opening tutorial location and when you come back to it, and I have to say, despite the English version being kinda wonky, it was one of the better organized translation projects I've worked on.
Still need to play it to see how it turned out.
I really like the Fallout soundtrack, but it's almost entirely lifted from Aphex Twin and the like. Aphex Twin's a hugely influential musician. There's really no shortage of people that emulate his style, including Mark Morgan.
It was a result of Interplay sending Mark Morgan music that they wanted him to emulate, he sent them demos, and they were like "actually, this is perfect, we'll use this."
Either way, Fallout 2 I don't think follows that suit.

This Dystopian mod reminds me of OddsWorld in a way. I also like the Greek Mythology metaphors they use. Having the lowest level be Tarterous and the Higher levels be Olympus is kinda genious. Especially considering the Godlike status the people from the higher levels hold.

In fallout 1 there is an ultra rare encounter that if you are heavilly radiated it actually increases some of your special stats permenantley.

The thought that character stats/personality changes dialogue options and quest assignment is really cool, and it's a shame it wasn't taken as far as it could have been. Would have been a very cool system to build an RPG around.

Great content! You just don’t get to see people going over mods in this depth. I’d love to see you go over the original frontier mod for fallout new Vegas. It’s got some great aspects and some terrible aspects and a nice sprinkle of controversy. I felt so mixed after playing it but it’s full of potential.

When I started this mod, I was amazed by it's technical aspects. The soundtrack, oh my god, it's so soo good, the sprites, and the gerenal "G" from the RPG was simply mesmerizing. That said... Oh. My. God. How I HATED the writing. I left Tartarus and went to NWO first, since on my way to Metro Station, I was ambushed by Olympus guards, so I assumed I should head the opposite way, and it felt subpar for me there. After I left there and went to the raiders settlements, well, thats when I couldn't keep playing. It made me physically ill reading the dialog, and my biggest gripe with it was how they portrayed women in general. Every women npc I met were: fangirling about the PC; completely and utterly stupid; a prostitute; submissive to other man. This got old so fast to me, since Catty, when she said that my character always knew what was better for her, to Lucy, to the women in Rainbow, to the fucking Casanova skill refering to women as "the weaker sex".
I don't know, it felt really forced for no reason, as if the creators trying to elevate the Y chomossome or something just because.
Anyways, I just found out your channel, and I love your videos. Keep it up, man!

Thank you!! All of your criticisms are spot on, and exactly what I was alluding to in the raider segment of this video. The way the game treats its black and female characters across the board is really gross
Actually it's a bit refreshing compared to most of the media nowadays. Women in the post-apocalyptic world wouldn't have it easy - and on the other hand, the male characters in this mod are not portrayed as examples to follow. The writing itself has its flaws, the background is badly fleshed out especially. Not sure how it is in the Russian original, and how much the clumsy English translation is to blame, but it sounds you're just overly sensitive.
@@EnclaveTrooper1 I have to agree. I wish I could remember the details, but there's a famous essay by a (maybe) Serbian who survived the conflict in the 90s. One thing he mentioned was that when his town was surrounded and barter became the only way to survive, women immediately abandoned any pretense of equality. When it came time for the men to form a party and negotiate with another group of men for supplies, not one single woman sign up for duty. And why would they? It was dangerous! Modern soyboys hate to admit it, but when the modern world ends, women go back to food preparers and child bearers IF they're lucky... or property if they're not lucky. If the irradiated wasteland of Fallout was real, you wouldn't see strong women handling guns and taking down raiders. You'd see armed groups of men fighting for turf and property, and yes, women would sadly be included among the property. This would also change their attitude toward men, making them more submissive, more eager to please strong men capable of protecting them from other men.

@@FiggsNeughton I mean, Israel conscripts both men and women. While it's not a post-apocalyptic location, it's not a safe place. Not to say women troops were deployed in substantial numbers by Russia during WW1/Civil War and later by USSR during WW2. D Some cultures also used women in military roles in the past (Dahomey amazons, Onna-musha, Female Sikh warriors). Bad times =/= women go to the kitchen.

Everything was good until I entered the factory; something didn't feel right. The factory has a depressing atmosphere. Mayor is made to look like an ignorant and boring character. Player's involvement seems too forced.
The cheif of security didn't represent the security force enough. For example, compare him to the leader of guards in metro station.
Finally you reviewed this mod, and yeah from what i know most russian mods tends to have many sexism/racist things in them at least from the ones i know and played, which is a shame but theres not much you can do about it, btw will you review complete overhaul mods like DUST or obscurum pandemic, the latter of which im more interested in since not many people appear to go in depth about it

I highly disagree with the batteries being a currency but not a consumable being bad. Sorry, it's a dumb idea that the thing people use to buy and sell goods can be destroyed. This is Metro players thinking that element of the game was ever good when it was just dumb at every level.
The tower residents sure are idiots. Or poorly written. But in their defense, the password "1234" only works once you changed it to that.
My main issue with the crafting "system", apart from it turning out to be criminally under-developed: carry weight. Same as other classic fallout mods with crafting systems, you are constantly short on carry capacity, for lugging all that useless stuff around. That problem is made worse by quest items also having weight. Sometimes a lot of weight. And you never know when you might need one. This is the first time I picked a perk to increase carry capacity by 50, and not regretting it.
All in all: exceptional world-building and atmosphere. But sub-par game mechanics and awful writing.

all of the controversy is overblown and honestly for free product it's very high quality. The story is the definitely little bit cringe on the NCR side I will admit but again these are people doing it for fun not getting paid and not professional writers

That's comparing apples to oranges and that is only one example their are tons of way worse mods out their Frontier is a good mod despite some very minor stuff which had been removed in updates.
Another question have you even played the mod? Because if you have you realize the stuff is very minor and all this controversy revolves around like two or three minor details bandwagoners have blown out of proportion

So it’s not any different.

Why is playing as a wahmen need to be a requirement? It's their game to design like they want to. It's pure fantasy already to think a woman could tackle the wasteland. I don't mind it, but it shouldn't be expected. Let them make their own game. There's a reason that doesn't exist and it ain't "muh oppression".
It's a common option in Fallout, I don't see why it shouldn't be an option with how "fantastical" the rest of the games are. It's not even portrayed as a big deal in the video.
It's kinda expected of RPG to let you play as woman or man.
But yeah, there's no big deal, especially if the story is more focused on the character. Like Witcher, for example.

The NCR questline is just stolen assets and ideas. Objectively bad.
The Legion questline is worse than the vanilla game. Wasted opportunity, mediocre at best.
The Crusaders questline, which is the best, is literally what if the Brotherhood, which are already annoying af, were Mormons, meaning that they are twice as annoying. Mediocre at best, too.
The best quest was literally an optional download because it was incomplete...
Considering the amount of time it took and how much hype it raised? Yeah, it's somewhat bad.

Seeing that they are russians and steal the design of exoskeleton suit from STALKER, I just hope that GSC World Game sues the hell out of them.
It's a free product which they are not making a profit of, and a good bit of STALKER's assets are free to use.
