Crossing Bass Strait to Tasmania | Ep 5 - Bass by Kayak
Vložit
- čas přidán 27. 03. 2017
- Bass by Kayak follows Beau and a band of merry men across Australia's Bass Strait in a Sea Kayak. In Episode 5, the lads edge ever closer to the end of their journey. Well-oiled, laughing at nothing, comfortable (but with sore backsides) and with the weather gods laying it on, they speed towards Little Mussleroe Bay on the NE tip of Tasmania.

Loving the series. Incredible achievement. Dan is hilarious
He is one of the most likable bastards I've ever met. British, warm, not overly interested in dental hygiene.
@@BeauMiles such a wholesome honest hug at the end !
"Oh My" by The Animators became one of my favorites songs after seeing this the first time.
How does this video have
me too.. very lucky
Way way underrated!
So true
Luckily it is now more than doubled but still way too low, especially for this kind of content. Love it!
Amen.
These guys are the true kayak kings. Me and my buddies all have Hobie PA-12-14's sit on top fishing or recreational kayaks. We do 5 day camp/fish trips 4 times a year. I fun fish usually 3 days a week. But we all have motors, and electronics, add-ons, and accessories. These guys are real kayakers, who know and deal with weather, large crossings. Sea kayaks are beautiful. 🛶 🌊🙏
A very belated well done lads. That was amazing..
It can come anytime Ant. Goodonya
3 years later I’m finding this and it somehow doesn’t have a million
Great stuff Beau, Ive been following you for years but have somehow never watched this series. Sitting here all morning making my way through this series on my day off before i begin renovations on the house for the day. Cheers mate
I’m officially a new fan! And will watch every video moving forward. The way you write and speak is extremely inspirational
I've been following Beau for years but have never come across his Bass by Kayak series until today, stumbling upon it by chance while trying to figure out for a voiceover I need to make if "Bass" is pronounced as "Bass" or "Bass". A few other sources on CZcams suggested it's "Bass" but as soon as I saw this video I knew I'd be able to trust Beau's pronunciation of "Bass". Many thanks for this clarification. I'm going to complete the recording now, and then I'll be back to watch the full video!
Beau- as someone who produces nautical charts (on & of the west coast of Canada), I love the low-angle shots you used in the intro segment and around 4:40!
Have watched loads of your videos since you landed in my feed. You are a very talented story teller mate.
As a newbie to sea kayaking it'd be great to see the essentials that you pack for a 2+ day trip Beau!
Agreed
How does this guy not have millions of subs... I think he is way better and has so much better videos then for example Lost LeBlanc. This man is a real adventurer and I wish these kind of videos find his way back at his channel. (Want to see more of this so badly :P)
Mate the videography and narration of these videos is unreal. Such a humble man. Watched almost all of your videos in the last few days. Just can’t get enough.
Yep awesome.
Man Beau is one of the bests out there. Kudos mate.
I'm 64 and I have not been to Flinders Island since March the 26th 1969 just one month before my 11th birthday. Also exactly 14 years since my one and only overseas trip to the US leaving from Melbourne on the 26th of March 1983 not only that my first born a daughter was born in Devonport on March 26th 1991. ....Pete from Tasmania...🍎🏝 Oh I almost forgot well done lads at crossing the Bass Stright in your Kayak's....🚣🚣🚣🚣🚣
As someone who knows a bit about film making can I just say that having the dedication and constant presence of mind to get those shots AND focus on the gruelling hard work of the journey itself is a real achievement.
Amazing work Beau.
I would love to see more bts content around the film making/workflow side of it if that is ever a possibility.
Wonderful to be able to experience vicariously the delight of new friendships and the delights of this magnificent world.
Wow i really loved watching the series. Great trip, great people, great video's! Nice and keep up the great spirit!
Ta Rik,
Will do. More to come!
Watched all 5 episodes on Boxing Bay. Inspiration for the New Year ahead. Excelent stuff!!!
So good! Awesome watch. Thank you for posting
Cracking journey boys, thanks for sharing.
Great adventure, slick film. Thanks for making it 🙂
Wow. That was awesome. Thanks for sharing this adventure 💖
Real peach of a series Beau. Good on ya.
Really great series. Congratulations!
Been loving all the videos you have put up. Thank you
I've loved every moment of this series, which is seldom the case for me with CZcams videos. Well put together and a grand adventure
Beautiful series to watch. Couldn't stop watching them
Great series of videos! I just binge-watched the lot.
AMAZING series! I dont want it to be over!
What a gifted storyteller you are. Well done.
Superb effort - congrats
Fantastic, well made & thoroughly engaging, just what a YT film should be. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this deserves a whole heap more views and success in it's own right.
Officially love your videos and keep up
great series of videos my friend!
Stunning trip and videos. Right in the feels and giving me the adventure bug to wash away the Covid cramp. Love from Ireland.
Awesome adventure!, wish I could have been there!
simply amazing and damn inspiring!
The feeling of knowing the end of our journeys is coming but not wanting it to...in itself that feeling is special and rare in our regimented lives. I am loving this series mate. Whether you kayak, ski, bike or whatever, the feelings you create in these wonderful videos beau all resonate. It’s all about journeys eh...thank you for sharing this.
Beau Miles this is an epic! I'm enthralled.
Hat's off to you, your adventures and videos are fantastic.
Thanks fs. More vids on the way- heaps actually, so hold on for a busy few months!
Awesome series loved every episode. Congratulations on your journey
Thanks highvoltage. Yep, a heck of a journey. I'm reliving it now as I write about it (for research), and experiencing things all over again.
This episode more than the others just makes me think "wow", I was lucky enough to go to Oz a few years back but seeing this makes me want to go back for longer. Thanks Beau.
yeah, flinders and tasmania is just stunning, so so so underrated
Brilliant, I want this life
love this channel
This is making me miss adventuring with my mates, gotta get back out there when i come home for the holidays. Just met a new sick group here in sydney as well tho. Can't wait for the hiking and climbing trips we have planned
Now, that was awesome. 110% awesomeness gents. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Romanov...We'll keep you posted on upcoming projects. In the meantime, check out the other ditties on the site and send along to all your people. Good man.
Nothing cool about a tan in Australia ❤ I also love my moon tan! 6:34
fantastic series ... and I bet loads of other poms like me feel the same. :-)
I've been meaning to do this crossing, just need the time, maybe when my little one is a bit older.
4:09 "Have you seen yourself"-Dan for the win.
Dang! would have loved to have known about you when you did this! Big fan and Tasmania is my home!
Never wanted to go sea kayaking until now!
bloody beautiful mateeeee
Really underrated channel. Great content
Don’t forget the “dinker”. Dinking around, in no hurry, getting nowhere fast!
Indeed Dan, Dinking around is the most under-rated aspect of travel- all the things you would never think of doing when departing (but hoping you get around to something, somehow). Two year olds are endless 'dinkers'; busy doing nothing (which is everything!). Gold
I love these vids!
Beau Miles ~ Great series Mate. One positive suggestion from a Sailor ~ best Breakfast is hot Porridge ~ tastes great & slow release energy ~ keep you going all day
Love It. Exciting Times.
Capó excelente video capó
I freakin love this video.
We want another series!!!!!!
Amazing guys! Thanks for sharing your journey. I guess the question now is, what's next?
Cheers Mr Picot!
I'll get back to you David...I've got a few projects on the burner 1) becoming a woodchopper (in the footsteps of my champion grandfather), 2) commuting to work in weird, bloody weird ways (see trailer vids) 3) The Urban Forager- coming soon...
+Beau Miles great! Can't wait. Keep'em coming
Excellent work. Your views and number of subscribers deserves to be much more.
Thanks Paul,
Pretty new to the CZcams thing. Send along to your networks mate and each views a win...Best.
Beau. I swear you are wearing something different everytime. Did you decide to pack the tall boy with ya! Great work. Makes me wanna get involved
well I never knew those islands were even there... great going education Australia....
flinders island? I wanna live there..
Wow!
Just wow! Found you through the beans video and thought it was funny but also liked you very much.. now.. just so impressed! True inspiration mate!
Long time i searched trips like these from youtube, finally found what i seek.. Great films, keep up the good work. Makes me wanna go to the water asap, that winter though :)
very good from argentina
Were the sails beneficial?
Love this series! I wanted to comment how strange it is to see humans in such a pristine and beautiful environment :)
Cheers, Talinite. Well yes, although Hogan island was cleared for sheep grazing (no longer), and Deal was cleared for an airstrip and timber (although pretty indigenous for the most part) and Flinders islands also heavily farmed. But yep, for a colonial place, it is astoundingly calm and beautiful and at times feels incredibly wild
wow🍻
Second go through this series..underrated quote ‘have you seen Austin Powers’
How do you get the aerial shots?
Who's flying a drone? What's that like whilst kayaking?
Beautifully made videos, I'm so happy to have found this channel!
smiles
"Have you seen yourself?" 🤣🤣🤣
Who steers the Drone at 6:04? Do they follow you by themselves?
That is beau's shortr, fattr, uglier twin brother jeau. He is allowed to tag along but must keep his head down and request permission to speek.
They have automated tracking functionality, yeah
@@LucasInCPT Lmao
Great adventure. Very inspiring. Can I ask what drone did you use and how was it flying/filming while paddling?
Thanks
Hi Logan, We used the Phantom 2, although co-producer Mitch Drummond did the piloting from shore. I'd dunk the thing If I flew it from the sea kayak, although I hear some game chaps and chappetes are doing it?
10:18 Handshake? Nah, let's hug!
Fantastic series. Just out of curiosity how did you get that footage around 6:55 and forward. Or rather who was operating the drone?
Are you deploying the drone from the kayak? How do you catch it?
man some of these coves they are camping in look like great swim/snorkel holes. wonder if they were just too tired, didnt film it or maybe the sharks are pretty thick down there. Id be basking more sore muscles in that crystal clear water every evening.
mate the swimming and snorkeling on flinders island (especially around trousers point, the spot they stopped for lunch after whitemark) is bloody incredible. Not many sharks at all either.
@@rag4877 ill put in on my bucket list. we travel mainly to hawaii (from the states) or mexico but AUS/NZ are on def up there on places to go. plane tickets just get crazy expensive crossing the whole pacific!
Bean foreshadowing @6:11
Here I was thinking you were a true blue Aussie, Beau, and then you go and say "gas station".
Mawson did not have a bath for a year. They could never get the ring he left scrubbed off the bath.
Can anybody identify what cap beau is wearing. I searched for quite some time now and can't find it. And 1080p doesn't allow to read on paused video content. ^^ seems to be the only closed neck shield that's really sewn together in front to withstand winds.
Hi, how big is the falcon sail on the epic kayak? 1meter or 1.3 meters? I have a 1 meter sail, on a tempest 170. Not sure if I should get a bigger sail. How does it handle on big winds?
Hi Behrens,
From memory it was a 1m as I had a 1.2 and from memory it was the biggest of the sails...I wouldn't go more than 1.2 as it was a boat tipper in 15+ knots, where-is the 1m could be kept upright with stronger winds and gusts.
The Falcon Sail in this video is 1.0 square meters.
If you are wondering what size Falcon Sail is best for an adventure like this, a 1.0 Falcon Sail is going to give the best wind range sweet spot. So if you carry 1 size sail the 1.0 is for sure the way to go. Typically I carry both a 1.0 and a 1.4. They are very easy to change, so I can pick the best sail for the conditions and make it happen. If it is a big wind day above 10mph, the 1.0 is the best choice, if its a light wind day, some people want a bigger sail. But still if you have 1 size sail for a sea kayak, the 1.0 is the way to go. Once you hit maximum hull speed, extra power is not going to do anything positive except teach you how to handle more power. Learning how to handle the power is a good thing, but not so good on big crossings and when you are focusing on other objectives.
I'm convinced there is a sixth person in the group
Hey Beau, what were you using to get the aerial shots when you were out of the expedition? A drone?
G'day Peter,
That's the Phantom 3 taking those pics. We've got a DJI Mavic now in the air also, which struggles a bit more in higher winds, and is a bit more washed out, or contrasy- but both are magic really.
What's that song at the end
What’s the name of the last song?
the end made me lowkey sad it was over
Same with me
@@BeauMiles haha watch ur vid 1 mile an hour vid every morning at 5am when i wake up, to inspire me to use the day efficiently
That beard is not going even slightly down that drain beau haha
It cheated and fertilized my potplants with my beard-gold. Lemons the size of a baby's head.
I can't figure out who's controlling your drone in all your group paddling shots. Was there someone else with you not seen on camera?
G'day, Evan. Mitch Drummond, co-producer, flew into Flinders Island and took some glorious shots of us while we headed south. He was also at the end (Tasmania). There are also a few re-shoots in there, and some training paddles that were pushed into the main timeline. Mitch is a heck of a pilot these days.
@@BeauMiles ah I see. Great shots all the way through. Love the series! Any more kayak expeditions planned?
@@EvanAagaard Always a few on the burner, but nothing in the next 12 months I can see. Odds and sods coming out shortly...Best
29 people are still stuck on that conference call 😑
who de f fly the drone ?
100% coaster myself
what's the song at 9:10
