- Tom Cruise's absence from the 2023 Oscars drew a few jokes from host Jimmy Kimmel. But, really, why wasn't he there considering all those nominations for "Top Gun: Maverick"? Did something upset him, or were there other reasons?

Were you surprised that he didn't show up to the Oscars?
no
Of course he wouldn’t come. He’s the most successful movie star out there…in fact, the LAST movie star out there. He’s had hit after hit after hit. Iconic movies! He knows that these vain, narcissistic people will never give him an Oscar and confirm he’s the best. No way. They will never give it to him.
Although I was glad for some very deserving winners, the sad truth is that for many, the Oscar ceremony is increasingly becoming a waste of time to watch, me included.
Not at all. Tom Cruise is a true blue movie star. He cares for the audience, not a bunch of narcissistic elites.
@@dharmisthadutta sooo he says😏
If I were Tom Cruise, I wouldn't go out of my way to go. The members of the Academy have done nothing but crap on him for years.
Good.
True
Yeah. Tom Cruise is rhe most popular Actor in the Movie Industry. His movies make millions of dollars. Top Gun Maverick made a billion dollars.
Yep.
💯
It's simple. It means the Oscar is not the most important priority to him. The number of seats filled in the theater is.
Amen!!! The “fans” filling up the seats would mean more than some dust collector on a shelf.
IMHO, the Oscars/Academy Awards are them stroking their and each others ego shows……
And Tom Cruise is his own man.
No no no no, Scientology is first and foremost to him. Second only to David Miscavige.

@@antmagor Oh yeh cynical invocation is #1 in the You Tube comments section however my appraisal of Mr. Cruise is far from cynical.
Tom Cruise has faced a lot of criticism from the media throughout his career, and has been snubbed by the Oscars several times. Despite this, he has managed to stay relevant in the industry for decades. Unfortunately, some people try to reduce him to just a pretty face, ignoring his hard work and dedication to his craft. In addition, the first Top Gun movie has faced its share of prejudices over the years. Ultimately, Tom doesn't owe anyone anything, and his contributions to the film industry speak for themselves.

It brought me back to the theaters 12 times over. The only movie I’ve ever gone to multiple times.
It was 5 years for me...

Tom Cruise is way beyond above the Oscars.

He was recognized at the SAG awards and gave a great speech. Plus he’s the only super star. I think he’s good without the vanity of the Oscar’s.

Tom Cruise single-handedly saved the movie industry after Covid. One of his best performances doesn’t get nominated and people are complaining that he didn’t come to the Oscars.
Speaks volumes about him. The true metric is how successful his movies are. Maverick and MI movies have done so well. He is a master of his craft of movie making. And whatever your views on him he is committed to making awesome movies. Much Respect. As for the oscars? Mehhh.
He didn't care even if his film was nominated. He is just too successful for them. A man of mission. Same goes to Cameron.

He's said before that he has chosen family time rather than attending awards ceremonies. The man is big enough of a super star; he doesn't need to attend these events. Tom was busy risking his life doing insane action stunts in the UK.
He is not doing the stunts - and if he wanted to they would not let him. Are you dreaming ? if he even had a banale injury it still could delay filming. Not gonna happen. And the banks or whoever gives the money would not allow that the lead actors risks the shooting. Even only getting some severe scratches could mess with the plan, if they cannot fix it with make-up. And the more HD they go with the material the harder it becomes to not see it. Covering things up (also with the sets) used to be easier.
I was surprised he didn’t get a Best Actor nomination. Top Gun was nominated for everything else. Tom Cruise made that movie what it was.

I absolutely agree and love the comment that Cruise was out saving the movie industry while everyone else was fretting. It’s that fretting to put it nicely that is why their viewing ratings have plummeted over the years. Tom Cruise makes movies not for Academy members but rather for his fans. He gets what he wants and fans get what they want. Simple as that!
It shouldn't be earth shattering that a person skips an award show people in the industry get to together to celebrate themselves. Tom is a workhorse. The money grossed by people going to the movie theaters and buying his movies means more to him than awards. Good for him for working instead of going to the award ceremony. The biggest injustice of this edition! Tom Cruise's decision to skip this year's Oscars was due to his realization that he had little chance of winning. He has no shortage of planes to fly to Los Angeles anytime, anywhere. Although I have not seen "Everything, Everywhere," I have seen "Top Gun Maverick," and I thought it was spectacular! It is rare that a sequel is better than the original. (Terminator 2 was better as an example). Top Gun Maverick was definitely on a much higher level in production and storytelling than the original, and the original Top Gun was also very good. The sequel out-Gunned it!!
He knew Top Gun was nominated for some many of the awards and they wanted him in attendance just for the ratings. They never had any intention of letting him win any of them (except a sound award).

*NO!*
All awards shows that focus on any segment of the entertainment industry, are nothing more than occasions where a bunch of spoiled rotten, narcissistic, egotistical, & very often sociopathic people gather together to tell one another how incredibly talented, wonderful, and great they are.
I've always admired *George C. Scott* for having the absolute balls to refuse the Oscar for *Best Actor* in 1970 for playing the title role in the movie *Patton.* Arguably one of the best acting performances of a truly iconic military man of all time. He understood, as most Americans do, that trying to compare one actor's/actresses's performance against another's is like trying to herd cats. The harder you try to make such comparisons, in anything approaching an equitable fashion, the more frustrated one becomes, and eventually you understand that it is a thankless task that is impossible to complete.
Like Scott warned in his letter to the *Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences,* each actor's performance is *unique* and comparing them against one another for the sake of a ballless gold statuette, is *degrading* for all parties concerned.
