Where’s our money? - The “Madgermanes” of Mozambique | DW Documentary

- They take to the streets with German flags, drums, and whistles: In Mozambique’s capital city of Maputo, the “Madgermanes” are demanding justice.
Julio Faizal Lakha is one of them. He went to the former East Germany four decades ago on the promise of a good education and well-paid work. But the reality was less than ideal. Half of his wages were withheld and deferred until later. Around 17 thousand other contract workers suffered the same fate. Most returned to Mozambique after Germany’s reunification. They have yet to receive the wages they are owed. And so, loudly, and rhythmically, they continue to demonstrate deep in southern Africa, every Wednesday at 11:00. A report by Marc Erath.

Hi sir I'm from Kenya I am a cinematographer I shoot many documentaries which is 15mins and 13min and I didn't publish in the media do u need those documentaries and where can we communicate
I can help me with many things sir Thanks for reading my message
So DDR payed the money to the Mozambique government as a form of debt decrease and the Mozambique government never payed the workers. Seems like a Mozambique government problem to me.
Yep
😂😂 it's just that we were colonized so much , we think white people are made of money . I remember as children , whenever we see a white person, we saw one like once every 6 months or so . We would run to them and say "money , money" and they would splash us with lots of coins. From 50c to r5. That's why we call a rich black person , umlungu coz they have money , not because they are white .
Not at all, is Germany problem, I worked, you pay me
@@amanciosibinde8592 the agreement was between the 2 countries. The workers were not hired individually.
@@amanciosibinde8592 70-80% of.the Cuban doctors salary is also paid to the Cuban government. You never saw Cuban doctors demanding extra payments from the countries where they work. Is the same
My aunt was one of the people that went to Germany. It would be great to see a closure to this madgerman situation..
Thank you DW News for this documentary
The resilience and determination of the "Madgermanes" in seeking justice is truly inspiring. This documentary sheds light on an important and often overlooked issue. Thank you for sharing their story.
They need to go ask the Soviet Union for the money.
Calm down komräd
The GDR payed the state of Mozambique. There government owes them.
DW is definitely the best documentary channel
By far
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
I heard of similar stories about the Vietnamese in the former East Germany.
Nice work
An important report! May the former workers be successful in their endeavor.
Another truthful and bravery documentary shared by the (DW) channel about Migermana issue ..thank you respectful ( DW) documentary channel for sharing

@@DWDocumentaryYeah, and you crumble when confronted with any criticism 😮😢😂
@@ADUAquascaping That's some dei minority thats paid a pittance
African leaders why are you so wicked 😞
why they are waving flags from west Germany when they were working for east Germany? If it was paid already now they have to settle this thing inside Mozambique. Europe cannot be responsible for ever for everything wrong in the world.
x2
I mean Europe is directly responsible for A LOT of the wrongs in the world.
Parts of world's most contested border between India and Pakistan were drawn in London by an intern FREEHAND.
I know this isn't what your favourite Far-Right political party/politician is saying but let's try to focus on the realities.
Why would l repay what you loaned me to your father? And not you?
Europe champions individual rights and freedoms…is that not so?
They should settle their debts and demand their money back from the Mozambique government.
Don’t get me wrong…l love Germany. One of my Oma’s was from there. But l believe strongly in people’s rights (especially where the state benefited from their labor). The Mozambican government was the bigger problem to be honest.
@@BatsiraiMusuka exactly, from the Mozambique government which already got the money from Germany several years ago.
@@AlexdaCunha l personally hate it when people say “read again” to someone that a reply has obviously gone above their comprehension. So l will endeavor to rephrase myself.
Governments are there to serve their citizens. When a government that obviously needs all the aid it can reaches out to another country’s citizenry…it assumes responsibility for those citizens.
Those citizens having done their adopted government a great service are to be paid for that very service.
Paying their government is not paying the citizens (worse still…not letting the citizens know you are paying their government in lieu of pay them is dishonest).
Let me put it to you this way…how would you like it if from now onwards your salary were to go first through a third party before coming to you? When the contract was between you and your employer? (Worse still, your employer went ahead and didn’t tell you how much he was allocating through said third party?)
You may argue…but as you can see even the lady in the German government clearly agrees with my sentiment. Things were not done correctly here.
DW rocks ! Did not even know about this until today. Keep it going guys !!
Thanks for watching! We are happy to hear you are enjoying our content :)
Nice one, DW. I had no idea about this.
Lol I had to check if this was actually Germany or Africa.
Lol why carry a EU flag? Should walk around with Marks and Lenin portrait and a Soviet red flag. Viel Glück 😂
What a powerful piece of news. A longer docu would be great. Thank u DW.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Germany can get a loan and pay the workers. The equivalent to today's money, plus interest. Take the Mozambican to international court of justice and have the Mozambican government pay it and the interest rate over the loan. The longer it takes, the longer they'll pay. The Mozambican government, can then look to track who were the responsible and work it out. I'm sure its not to difficult to find who took the money.
East Germany doesn't even exist anymore. Africans love to conflate resentment with supposed justice. People living today are not responsible for the past. People living today are not responsible for outcomes.
Just imagine how much wealth they could have produced with their time instead of protesting for decades. It's obvious resentment and is entirely unjustified.
If anything, the Mozambique government is guilty, not modern Germans!
Well, they should ask Russia, who where in charge in East Germany up until 1990.
Got nothing to do with Russia.
@@lordjazoijua94 why not? Russia was in charge. Not Germany.
@@tobiwan001 they already paid. the money went into Mozambican politician pockets.
if germany must pay it should be a direct payment to the victims.
why give millions to those corrupt african political merchants
The whole thing is hypocritical, their own state offered them as labour and was paid for it in some form by the GDR. And don't forget, at that time they were only paid in Ostmarks, which were worthless internationally.
aluta continua🇲🇿
If Someone does Work for an employer, and the employer pays the money earned to a 3rd Party......thats the employers mistake, and their responsibility to rectify......Pay the workers what they're owed!
No, you're incorrect. They were hired via a government program. It's not the employer's fault that the government stole the money from their workers. The workers were contracted via their government.

@@ADUAquascaping Actually it is, Colonialist Countries have been installing supporting and using corrupt Governments for decades as a way of obtaining resources for a fraction of the cost since Slavery was abolished.
This is no different. When Countries in Africa want loans from western countries that attempted to colonize or enslave them, those countries impose restrictions that inhibit development and growth along with a ridiculous amount of debt.
If they can impose rules that work against a country then they can impose rules that benefit the people that they are employing in that country. It's not hard to use geopolitical pressure to ensure a Government does things the right way. The The fact that they did not ensure the workers would be paid in this situation, or seek to protect the rights of those workers speaks volumes. And it achieves the same goals as Colonialism........
Resource Extraction
Arrested Development
Exploitation
Injustice
It's no wonder why countries in the Global South view countries in the West with a Deep level of distrust...........The West Colonised and Enslaved Africans in order to boost its economy and industrialze itself, improving the living stands of its people while abusing people in other countries.
Nothing has changed.
informative though at time I disagree with western media Bias as an African, this is a good one and hope modern Africans are negotiation the current job vacancies in the the global North as we know that German do not have enough labor since population is majorly old , old the new workers are getting good deals like Natives would
That's very sad what the mozambican government are doing for madjermanes...my parents are madjermanes...we are feeling the pain of this...
People meet to move on and work, move on
33 years after reunification ... just in time 😄
Pacta sunz servanda. Germany did.
“Karl marx avenue” lmao
People say colonizing past is the problem. No way, its the CURRENT african leaders curroption.
Colonizers made these corrupt governments to serve them.
Poverty and Africans is more or less the same thing, even if you pay them, they're still gonna end miserable.I'm African too but this is my strong analysis regardless...
To be fair, at least DW is covering this issue where most news outlets from Germany are not.
Why should they ? It’s a Mosambik problem.
I disagree. The DDR was a different government from West Germany. Once the reunification happened the old DDR government was disolved. Germany is not East or West Germany anymore. The bill should not fall on current Germany. Also, it seemed like they got scamed by their own government as well.
Isn't it responsibility of the ones that bought the companies after the downfall of the wall ? When you buy a company you also buy all obligations right ?
Why would Germany pay twice, when the real thieves were (are) govt of the Mozambique?
😢This is how innocent people trade their time for slavery 😮
Thank you DW for this very informative doco. It is incredible that in an age well-beyond the systems of Slavery, Indentured Servitude and Sharecropping in the "First World"...we see this brazen exploitation of poor, Black people in a developed country like Germany. Germans are notorious for their meticulous record keeping, maintaining the chain of command, proper protocol etc. Yet they contravene they established terms of a labour agreement, where they were supposed to pay these workers directly...to arbitrarily making deductions from their pay, to service debts owed by the Mozambique government...a government full of corrupt, self-serving leeches.
Germany would NEVER have done such an underhanded thing with another European country, regardless of how POOR & IGNORANT the workers were. The sad thing is, no one is taking these “Madgermanes” seriously. Their government allows them to blow off steam once per week, and they've turned their protest into a mini Carnival. No investigation has or will ever be launched to determine where their pension contributions went. It is not hard to believe that gov't officials in both Mozambique and Germany are just waiting for these people to get old, tired and just die.
Nothing changes it always there
respect for reporting on this
govs have way too much power
which is best in the world idk
and then they talk about pro israel
Jews are indigenous to Israel and were refugees fleeing genocide. Palestinians started the physical violence! Research it, I dare you. Islam is full of hypocrites and extremists. Name a Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, or Jewish terrorist organization who kills in the name of God? Who is killing in the name of God other than Jihadists?
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: “The Antichrist will pass by this salty barren area i.e. Madinah, in a passage of a canal. Most of those who will come out to him will be women so that a man will return to his intimate wife, mother, daughter, sister or aunt to tie them up for fear that they might go out to him. Then, Allah will afflict him with Muslims who kill him and his followers and the Jews will hide behind a tree or a rock and the rock or the tree will say to the Muslim: There is a Jew behind me, come and kill him!” 3 This Hadith was reported by Ahmad in his Musnad.
Arabs invaded Israel. Islam invaded dozens of countries (regions) and forced conversions

I'm sorry, not my false but I can see it
Cannot wait to hear this extortion😅
Stuff like this is what gets views, shares, and engagement on social media now. It's good we are highlighting issues like this but it's important to remember that these are the viewpoints of a small minority of people and do not reflect society as a whole. "Give me my money" is what they're saying but what are those in power or the government doing to actually make this happen?
You're saying they need to get violent?
"Hey bro topple the government to get paid for your work you did 5000KM away in Germany"

Yeah everybody wants the Germans money
gebt ihnen ihr Geld!
You can yourself
Aw pay them please!
So these are the original Germanic tribesmen!? 🤯
Have they considered earning their own money, like the rest of the world ?
You might think about that again.
Western welth is build on colnoes. Exploiting their resorces.
And that basicly never stopped. Today interntional industries still get out whatever they can.
The playingfeld is not even.
Have you?
They did work, but they didn’t get paid. Did you watch the video?
What are you talking about? Do you work for free? They are demanding the wages they earn, do you understand that?
Your money went to ukraine
Shame on Germany for such abuse and exploitation of the poorest people and countries.
You need to pay attention. The GDR paid the money to the Mozambique government; later on the government of a unified Germany paid again and the money was stolen by Mozambican politicians. How many times do you expect Germany to pay? The responsibility is with the corrupt government of Mozambique.
It was the Mozambican government that stole thw wages.
Germany should just pay the money.
Germany paid twice already. Both times the Mozambique governmet stole the money.
Contract are to be obligated. Germany fulfilled their part. And more than that.
Germany abided by the contract with Mozambique and on top of that, they decided to pay these workers 75 million euros, which the Mozambique government pocketed - Germany has absolutely nothing more to do here, they already went overboard for them.
Germany have to pay
