    Fender, please reinstate John Cruz as a FCS Master Builder. The way he was cancelled (for a joke) was extreme. Give the guy another shot; he gave y'all a lot of technology and years of his life. You can't cancel him for a social media post regardless of what the post was about. Redemption, forgiveness, and PEOPLE are more important than mistakes.

    Full disclaimer up front. I own 3 Fender custom shop guitars. These are great instruments IF and i mean IF you do your homework and find the right ones. Overpriced???? Absolutely! Overrated??? Can be! They are unique but not equal so beware. However they do have their place in the instrument world. I was skeptical just like you so i went and found used ones literally half of the retail cost so THATS the only reason why i have accumulated three of these guitars. They looked the part and they sounded incredible. For me they fill a nostalgia void. Thats enough reason for me so i took the leap of faith. I own a 1951 Nocaster, 1957 Strat and a 1960 Strat. All CS heavy relics. Those are my favorite years from Fender and i would need to hit the lottery twice in one lifetime to own the originals.

    I think the unique wear on the back of Gary’s guitar neck is caused by the unique way he had to grip the neck in order to play the way he did. He often used his middle finger where most would use their ring finger so the wear would be very different to almost anyone else.

    I've had vintage 57 strat's V's, a few '59 full C"s profile. a 60's strat the neck less full which is nice, 66 shaved thin the most strat neck ever, a few 67's Strat's that had almost the best not too thin "C", ' 68 and '69 CBS strats was more round I didn't care for
    Believe it or not I owned a '36 V neck National Resonator that was once Robert Johnson's which was a nice V full with neck..

    If fender and other guitar manufacturers want to help solve their sales problems they need to help find and promote a new generation of guitar gods. I bought my first guitar after hearing guys like Richards, Page, and Clapton on the radio. Same for many other guitar players when they heard Slash or Van Halen. We've lost the new generation of guitar gods. There's few we hear on the radio today and say to ourselves, "i want to learn that riff!" Find new guitar gods and you'll sell more guitars.

    • @yargnad
      @yargnad Před 5 lety

      That's not Fender's business. Record labels had always filled those roles in the past. The new generation is not demanding guitar gods, they want electronic dance music and "the experience". And honestly, guitar gods only ever truly appealed to the male market segment which used to be the the single most driving factor in sales. The world has changed quite a bit since those days. Now anyone can and does make music easily without needing to be able to "play" an instrument at all and that has far more appeal to those who thought they'd never be able to do so.
      I totally called this 20 years ago when I first installed Reason and made tons of tracks quickly and easily without a single physical instrument. I had guitars and amps, but they're a hinderance in comparison to just double clicking an icon, for ease of production.
      Guitars will always be difficult to master and when the alternative is clicking, which anyone can do, most people will take the easier route. There actually are plenty of amazing guitarists around, but there's nowhere near the demand for it as there used to be.

    • @jazzfunkhead6866
      @jazzfunkhead6866 Před 5 lety +1

      The guitar god has been replaced by the rap god. Metal and Hard Rock dug its own grave. Steve Vai is honestly the only one left who can truly pack a house on his name, resume and playing in 2019.
      Music goes in cycles and trends. Country artists sound like pop music now. To support your point about hearing something on the radio to make me want to play guitar back in the day for me was Nile Rodgers funky riffs on Chic's song "Good Times". That blew me away as a teenager and I begged my uncle for days until he gave in to let me play on his guitar to try and learn it.
      With time someone will come along and change things up like Hendrix or Cobain and we will be talking about guitar gods again. Just have to be patient for it.

I will say though that I once played a John Cruz Strat about 15 years ago and that thing was UNREAL AWESOME! It was also $7,000! I don't think of these as guitars for regular people and besides that why would someone want to take that out on a gig and risk getting it all banged up when you can get a regular Strat and do that? The whole "relic" thing is a total gimmick. It wasn't like the old guys were literally just looking for an old beat up Strat. They just happen to play theirs so much that they wound up looking that way. It's hard for me to imagine a young SRV or Rory or Gary paying out the butt for a Strat that just "looks" beat up.

      Masterbuilt Fender starts at about $4500 new and go up from there. The American Select series was only a step below and ranged up to about $2500. These guitars are significantly nicer in every conceivable way than a MIM. Even the new American Professional series is drastically better. Heck, all of my Made in China Fenders are nicer than any MIM I've ever owned. There is a huge difference... and for that you'll have to pay.
      That being said, there's no reason to get an American Fender unless you're incredibly serious about playing guitar. The amp makes much more of a difference in the sonic quality of your tone, so put your money into that first.

    I understand a connection one has to a guitar. But C'mon man, Idc how many times you went to a grave or what you are thinking when building a guitar. End of the day it is a guitar and its not worth the money you want for them ever! Yes guitars are different from one another. Different feel of a neck. Different config's of electronics and looks. BUT no guitar is worth more than 500.00. And I'll tell you why. Power tools! A custom shop guitar is just a guitar made to order. If it were everything you wanted in a guitar than why do people have a custom shop guitar but still have other guitars? And the biggest thing is sales. If I were selling guitars for thousands of dollars, I would say whatever you wanted to hear. The fact that you can buy a new guitar for a hundred dollars and really nice guitar for 2 to 3 hundred dollars is a slam dunk on the whole thing! Look up Harley Benton and see great guitars brand new. Play one and play a CS over priced guitar. Yeah, That's all it takes.

    • @longlivegarybusey6409
      @longlivegarybusey6409 Před 5 lety

      In my opinion it's idiotic to buy a guitar with that much legitimate wear from a longevity standpoint. I would never want to pay thousands of dollars for a guitar someone actually bumped around and scraped up and sweat on and had sticky controls from being caked with cigarette tar, spilled drinks, and hooker vagina. If we're talking cost, an authentically aged 60's strat goes for a shit ton more than a new relic. You're right in the sense that you could buy an american standard or even an MIM standard and beat it up yourself and save a lot of money initially but now you've lost money if you go to resell it. Custom Shop relic won't lose value. Neck is straight, frets are new and dressed, neck pocket is tight and not cracked from over tightening, pickups are more consistent and well made, pots and wiring are new, tuners may be aged but internally are new and will last for years to come, nut is new, springs may also be aged but have new spring tension....screws are new but made to look old so they aren't stripped or prone to snapping....I really don't get why people are so hard against someone having a cool looking beat up guitar that hasn't actually had a life travelling around with the worlds most careless clumsy sweaty guitar owner.

      Was my opinion too until an original 1964 Stratocaster in Sunburst came my way as I was very very tempted to buy it for a small fortune. I decided to get it checked out and it had the usual issues of tuning instability and all those years of sweat in the wiring of the pick ups made it one noisy mess. All corrosion on the bridge saddles, springs, Tremolo Block made it hard for setting the action and intonation properly. It looked bloody beautiful in the case and when I had it in my hands but with all its issues, i wasn’t going to part with all that money. So I decided to check out a Relic Custom Shop 64 in Fiesta Red. Fell head over heels. A fine build of a Guitar, no issues and reliable in every sense. So there you go. Try one and see

    The guy at the end of this clip should’ve been playing a fender Squier. Definitely should not be buying a custom shop guitar for $5000 at his skill level

    They are very talented craftsman but you have to put it perspective. They spend hours and that reflects in the cost of producing something that is a copy of an original that was purchased for £100 painted different colours, has none genuine parts on it, customized to fit the player who owns it. Like Gary Moores Strat, or Rory’s Strat. I own a custom shop Rory Strat, it’s a lovely guitar but Fender for me got it wrong.

    Your heroes played guitars made by Mexicans and housewives. Not "wizards". You don't need no damn wizard to make a good bolt on mass produced guitar. Stop with this magic shit.

    Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but it is unfair for the instrument itself and for the builder to have a demonstration like this. My opinion!!!! I would surely wanted to buy a Ferrari if I could and drive it. But I wouldn't make a promotional video if I couldn't drive her the "proper way"....

      As John mentioned earlier, he wants to see the smiles on his customer's face. I play the same standard as the customer and having own a Custom Shop Strat, I also have the same smile on my face!

  • @notalkguitarampplug-insrev784

    They even don’t know how to make stainless steel frets!!! It ‘s just a great marketing machine. Go for a Tom Anderson, Suhr, Xotic if you want great quality and attention to detail. This this is just for Fender fans who want to throw money on assembly guitars.

  • @bluwng
    @bluwng Před 6 lety +24

    I love Fender but this is a modified assembly process I seriously doubt any of these guys can hand build a guitar from a raw piece of wood. You Knuckle heads pay customer prices for an assembled guitar.

      bluwng they can pick a nice piece of wood, maybe add a little extra shape to the neck, load it in a cnc, order a paint job. I love watching videos about this process, but I've bought two hand made guitars in the last few years and I'll never go back.
