I figured this moment had warped a more serious character into their memory and they forgot about his goofy lax mode. But now I'm realizing that's all they really knew about him. lol, now I'm even more baffled they thought his voice didn't fit before.

Not pointing out anything from the manga, but... Hoshina mentioned that his family have been kaiju hunters since the Muromachi period, which means the kaiju have been around since at least the 1300s.
Yeah, I had the same initial reaction when I watched ep 1. The main thing that sets this one apart for me personally... Kafka. Most other anime with this premise have protags with dark/depressing/tragic backstories. Kafka's kind of a goofball. Also, I like the fact that his "humble" background on the clean up crew is actually useful when he's not in kaiju form, benefiting the whole team. As a human, he's not especially good at killing kaiju, again, not like most protags in this genre. Just some personal opinions from an initial sceptic.
its honestly soooooo hard to pick a single favorite from this show! everyone is so unique and fun to watch. the standouts for me are ofc kafka (love that big teddy bear sm), shinomiya, ichikawa, and hoshina. i might have to pick up the manga even tho im the middle of reading so many things rn but this is just too good omg

@@mxkimxschxin It was implied that most of the characters are confirmed to be full fledged adults. With mentions of Kikoru graduating at the age of 16. Not that she is 16 currently. But yeah since it most ages are not outright confirmed, we can only assume that Kikoru is 18 at most. So the age difference is still quite weird if she were to be Kafka's love interest. 😅
@opia6597 Pretty sure Kikoru is 17, and while I don't disagree that a sibling-like or father-daughter type relationship would be preferable, there's nothing wrong with a one-sided crush on Kikoru's side, so long as it doesn't go anywhere, which I doubt it will.
Daikaiju means Kaiju who have fortitude of 8.0+ or more.. Kafka's kaiju has 9.8+ fortitude (Strongest kaiju in history said in ep 4) Hoshina is no match for him.. ❤
Vice captain hoshina doesn't know. There's no way for him to know for sure kafka is Kaiju 8. He knows something is strange about kafka and something is strange about Kaiju 8. And he's aware Kaiju 9 appeared as a human. So he has the dots but outside meta knowledge who would jump to well kafka is obviously Kaiju 8. Plus mina knows kafka from childhood. One would have to assume a Kaiju took on a human form as a child befriended mina whose town was destroyed by Kaiju and kafka s words as a kid inspired her to join the defense force to kill Kaiju. That's hard to accept and believing kafka turned into a Kaiju later is also hard to wrap your head around. Point is hoshina doesn't know shit, he just has some gut feelings about no concrete ideas
Loved your reaction as always. You should watch society of the snow. It's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one. If you do watch it I recommend the original language with subtitles, the acting was amazing

The sub makes more sense because that's what the animation was made for. Dub has to fit the timing and lip movements while making sense in english. That's just the natural trade-off.
When Kafka fights the red kaiju I kind of hope he loses. Its gonna be annoying if he's somehow stronger than every other kaiju. The plot armor is gonna get old after awhile.
