    Loving your Newfoundland videos! I want to add one thing about the sculpture as you walk to the settlement from the L’Anse aux Meadows Visitor Center. As you know, some early humans spread into Europe while others went east and eventually into North and South Americas. The sculpture celebrates not only the meeting of two cultures but also celebrates the moment when humankind made it full circle around the globe. Descendants of the humans who went west met up with descendants of those who went east right where you’re standing! I found that very cool. I love Newfoundland and the way you chronicling your journey. Thanks for taking us along!

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, I do remember reading that. My initial interpretation of the sculpture was rather unimaginative; I thought it was slag from the ironworks. ;-))

    Hi! Great video! We were there about 4 weeks after you with our two teenagers girls. The Viking village people said during Covid they were slow with tourism, so they themselves made the fairy houses to bring interest to folks with little children to walk that trail. Some kids don’t want to walk the boring trails the villagers said. So now the fairy houses can perk their interest. We loved them!! Also, I got to see bakeapple berries in the meadows! Ripe in August! So beautiful! We wish we booked enough time for Labrador but I guess we will have to come back!

    I'll echo what another viewer said about the fairy trail: it was indeed a "covid project" to keep the team busy but, it also comes from the sagas and Norse culture. Hildafolk, or the hidden people, were mischievous elves in Norse Folklore so these houses are for them! Did you see any Hildafolk on your visit? Thanks for coming to see us! Watching this video again in retrospect. Interesting to compare what we ended up doing and Not compared to you. Based on your video had planned to go to the Insectarium on the way south, but timing didn’t work… things are starting to close down for season. Did take a guided hike to the Tablelands and it is otherworldly complete with carnivorous plants. Did the Trombolites and stayed at the City parking lot beyond the trailhead overnight. Spent the next day at the indigenous peoples historical site at Port au Chois that highlights several waves of human occupation over the last 8,000 years. There is a lighthouse there too and we saw a group of Caribou there down by the beach. Stayed at Barachois Pond PP last night. It was windy and stormy and closes for the season after tonight. Heading toward Port aux Basques to catch the ferry back. Tried to move our reservation up, but nothing earlier was available. Probably impacted by the closure of the Argentia ferry due to electrical problems.

    A close friend of mine did a similar trip a few years ago, and she stopped counting moose after 2 dozen. Oh well. Too many, or not enough? I thought 2 dozen was ALMOST 2 dozen too many to see along the highway, though. 😀

It brought to mind a book I read years ago, that I think you would appreciate, especially as we draw close to 9/11. We bought a SIM card that I could use to upload video but one of the problems is they said it was only 3G. It was quite expensive $80 for 20GB. It was slow but worked. Verizon’s partners in Canada limit you to 500MB per day per device. I have 2 devices and John has one. We turned off all the background stuff that gobbles data and used hot spots wherever we could find them. All the Tim Hortons have them but often very slow. For nav we could use the Garmin in our car.
