    Retired to CBS 2 months ago with 8 cats and 2 gerbils. Don’t know a soul here, never been here and have no connection to NL. What everyone in Canada knows about NL is that the people are very nice and the people that leave NL, talk of the day when they can return home. This was enough for me. Yes, I’m LOVING Newfoundland!

      @@FromShetoMe you have to travel at night. A trucker who used to drive carnival equipment from one site to another told me that the truckers driving the equipment gave up driving at night because at night at least one of them would total a truck when he hit a moose. I remember traveling to St John's from Fogo Island one night. Suddenly, I saw the truck ahead of me brake. The driver came back and said to me, "There's a moose on the road. We'll have to wait until he moves off." I'm glad that vehicle was ahead of me because I might have hit the moose, but the driver of the other vehicle had enough experience to recognize a moose standing in the middle of the road.

She told me when I mentioned I'd taught in Newfoundland that her mother adored the Grenfell mission and had been a part of a fund-raising group in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada's capital). There's a book on line that talks about a doctor and his wife's experience working for the Grenfell mission. I really should read the book about Grenfell. Apparently, when he spoke and when he wrote, he made up stories and some of the stories in his books were written by his wife! He embellished the truth to raise more money for the mission.

    That whole, camping along the side of the road thing and parking wherever you could, that's about as Newfie of an experience as you could have.. and you didn't even know it lol. For the May long weekend, there's a tradition of camping in JUST such places. For anyone who reads this, know that you're pretty much ok to park anywhere along highways in a "if I fits I sits" manner. And even if you somehow ended up on private land, it'll be happening in Newfoundland and you'll probably be invited up for a feed before being kicked off the property.

    Wonderful telling of your personal family story and loved the camera work. We took the long ferry arriving in Argentia yesterday morning after a 16 hour crossing. We got a cabin and had hoped for a last minute cancellation for a dog-friendly one. But that didn’t happen so our dog had to stay in a crate in the kennel. Apparently he didn’t enjoy it and barked himself hoarse. Shortly after leaving the Sydney Harbor it got foggy and stayed that way for the entire crossing. It was a weird fog. It looked like it should be cold but it was balmy outside. We ate dinner in the buffet rather than the restaurant because the restaurant hasn’t been able to find enough cooks to reopen yet. Spent our first day in the nearby town of Placentia learning about the unique local history of the area (without a personal connection). Since your last video we continue to be plagued by mechanical issues. One of our lithium batteries shut down and we had to call technical support to re-start it. Now half the electrical outlets have gone out in the RV and we haven’t been able to figure a quick fix. Now we’re in a quandary about whether to continue on to more remote parts of the province or to look for a mobile RV Tech around St. John’s. In the meantime we stopped at winery today and tasted cloudberry and birch wines. Talk about unique…

      A Memorial University of Newfoundland (and Labrador) prof told me that there's a new book published on Dr Grenfell. He's a very controversial figure in N.L. Maybe, one reason the land was so undeveloped was that the French Treaty Shore was claimed by France and Newfoundland and Labrador was claimed by Canada and Newfoundland (which was a separate country). Therefore, development didn't take place in that area. I traveled up the Great Northern Peninsula highway in July of 1978 as far as Conche for an outdoor education experience on the Grey Islands. The West Coast of Newfoundland is a well guarded secret. Very empty. Since fishing closed down so many years ago, a lot of people have left. .

    Such a great video, so looking forward to part 2. I live in Newfoundland, have always loved it but appreciate it more as I get older. There are many places to explore here that aren’t always easy to find. Will keep me busy for many many years! Thanks for another well made and edited video!!

    That definitely is the smallest moose in Newfoundland. The point you make about the purity of the water in Gros Morne. The brewers of Black Horse beer in Newfoundland claim it is made with water so pure it will not conduct electricity. It is actually safe to drink in the bath tub. Enjoy.

I am 6'3" and I often wonder how John does it. But I can surely appreciate the advantages to traveling in a smaller RB. Enjoy your week and thanks again for bringing us so many interesting adventures.

    Debbie, your travels give me the itch to head back eastward. During Covid we made it to the Maine-Canadian border wanting to cross, but it wasn’t possible. I hope in the next year or two we can travel to some areas that you have been. Warmest greetings to you & thank you.

    Excellent job on your video! I am originally from Happy valley, Labrador, but I reside in the capital St.John’s. My family and I have done what we call a staycation the last couple summers because of Covid restrictions and what not. But there was so much we discovered in our own province, and yet so much much more. You covered a couple places in this video that we also visited in the last couple summers. The roads have improved a lot, but some still remain battered in potholes. I’m quite excited to see the next part to see where you went next. So many things it seemed you may have either not recorded or you just missed, but ya still got to feel the island vibe:)

    I was born and raised in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. There is maybe a gas shortage once a year, not every day... You make it sound like our province can't even manage to transport gas to our outports, you don't have to "refuel when you get the chance", there is always gas, just like any other province. I've literally, maybe seen one gas station a year not get gas, and that's because of poor management not because of the ability of our province to transport gas!! Non the less, appreciate that you enjoyed our province and respected everything!

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  Před 11 měsíci

      Certainly didn't mean to imply poor management. Fueling stations are further apart than most people are used to and not being familiar with an area makes us more cautious. We've also driven to Alaska and done the same thing, filling before we were half empty. We were in Death Valley, California a year ago and their one station had run out of diesel. This is all just to say we should be prepared for the unexpected.

    • @dinkster1729
      @dinkster1729 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@FromShetoMe Newfs don't like to be told that their province is a little behind the times. It's a good idea to take a camper van because motels might be filled and expensive and not of the highest quality. Just as well that you fill up when you can. You never know. The year I was on Fogo Island we had just switched to no lead gas, but Fogo didn't have any. Fortunately, I bought a truck that required leaded gas, the last of its kind. 1975 Ford F100, manual shift and no power steering. I sure do appreciate my Safari after that truck. My father negotiated with the local Kingston, Ontario Ford dealer for it. If I'd known better, but I'd never owned a vehicle before, I would have insisted on automatic and power steering. Still, it's a good thing I had a truck that took leaded gas.

      @dinkster1729 You are on every Newfoundland video spewing hate and carefully disguised passive aggressive insults. I'm on every Newfoundland video too so I've seen you.
      You are Ontario born and visited sometime in the 60's and apparently haven't shut up about it.
      You're an old out of touch bigot, likely alone, who remains jealous of a place he was likely shocked to learn wasn't a "newfie" as he thought it should be. But you like many others try your best.
