there are actually two ways to interpret the scene were Barnum's wife is looking at him during "Never Enough", the first (and most popular) one is that she's looking at him and realizing he might be in love with Jenny Lynn, the second one (and my personal favorite) is that she's actually listening to the song and realizing that SHE will never be enough for him, their family will never be enough and he'll always want more.

Most of the actors did their own singing…Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Keala Settle, as well as many minor characters. Rebecca Ferguson as Jenny Lind actually can sing, but once she heard Loren Allred sing it, she said she needed to do it.

Rebecca may not have been the real singer of the song, but I think that's interesting that the only actor who DOESN'T sing is the one playing a singer. On purpose?
Ironically, Rebecca Ferguson does do her own singing in another Hugh Jackman film called Reminiscence. And she's quite good.

so the scene where she sings never enough, that's not her singing, it's in fact a woman named Loren Allred, she wanted to be behind the scenes doing the vocals, the person who lip synced it did a good job at it. Loren came onto Britians got talent and performed it on there, Simon was excited cause he said it was one of his favorite songs in that movie. i'm just so happy that Loren came out behind those curtains and showed her true talent. i loved this movie, i just watched it a few mins ago lol. i felt emotional when they were singing the song this is me.

not only did Zendaya and Zac do all their own stunts for Rewrite the Stars, but that scene was the first one they shot together for the film. spectacular performance by both of them, as well as everyone else. my only gripe with the film is that they kinda glossed over the conversation about growing up in poverty vs. wealth and why PT pushed so hard for it. Charity ends that conversation by remarking that he doesn't need everyone to love him but that wasn't really his motivation. we watched PT grow up struggling to survive, losing his father at a young age and having to fend for himself, never knowing where his next meal would come from. he didn't want his daughters to have to go through that, which is totally understandable. did he lack balance when it came to providing for his family? absolutely. I just wish the film treated it with a bit more nuance instead of making it seem as if he just wanted to do it for fortune and glory like Indiana Jones. anyway, despite that I really love this movie and the songs always put me in a great mood! 😃

Since everything old is new again, try writing a letter to someone special. There is something very personal about receiving a handwritten letter, seeing the impression of the pen on the paper and the words are very personal. Much like reading a book, you hear that person's voice and you can read it over and over again. Our only brother just passed last month at the age of 71. We found in his footlocker in his home all the letters from our parents, his sisters when he was stationed in Vietnam and a DMZ in Korea during the early 70's. We could see how many times he took out the letters that had dad telling him to focus, keep his chin up and that he was caring for his car, Mom and her gardening successes, Thirdgirl's cheerleading and Secondgirl's made gloves in army green. I told his about the bully in my third grade class and he wrote back with instructions on how to stand up to her and to ask Firstgirl for punching tips. Reading those letters, our whole family came alive again.

PT Barnum was at the center of the outrage machine for a while when this movie was popular. Some of the things people said about him were true- for example, he bought an old slave woman and made her perform long hours every day, claiming she was 160 years old and George Washington's old nanny. Though, for what it's worth, he later changed his views of slavery and became an abolitionist. Some of the things people said (like that he kept his "freaks" in cages and whipped them) was absolute nonsense. But most of it revolved around the idea of having a "freak show" at all. Obviously, today we see it as horrible. But people tend to forget the time this happened, and the lack of alternatives available to these people.
For most people with any kind of deformity or condition at that time, the best life they could possibly hope to have would be to be hidden away within their family, never meeting outsiders, never being able to work or live independently, certainly never getting married and having a life and family of their own. And that was the best option. As abhorrent as we find it today (people paying to gawk at others' deformities), Barnum's show offered them something far better. A chance to earn a living (and a good one- he paid VERY well), travel, meet other people, and have their oddities celebrated rather than hidden away. The man who played Tom Thumb became one of the wealthiest and most celebrated performers in the world at that time. He married another woman with a similar condition that he met through the show. In fact, when Barnum fell into financial difficulties later in life, several of his former employees (including Tom Thumb) used their own money to bail him out and help him reestablish himself.
PT Barnum was not a saint. He definitely did multiple morally questionable (or straight up objectionable) things throughout the course of his life. There's plenty of gray and a bit of black there. But neither was he the horrible, evil man who abused and exploited his employees in order to get rich off people laughing at them that outraged 2018 wanted to paint him as.

Never Enough is a really powerful song, but in context of the story the lyrics are really dark. It's lovely to listen to but it's a song about ambition/greed. Ambition (Barnum) about never sitting back and accepting one's position in life, greed (Jenny, the socialites, etc) saying that no matter what they get they'll never be satisfied or even thankful.
