    Today I demonstrate how to germinate citrus seeds. Planting citrus seeds is easy, provided you do not let the seeds dry out. Plant them fresh from the fruit, if possible, or keep them slightly damp until you can plant. I have grown multiple citrus trees from seed and visited a dozen seedling citrus trees which were bearing wonderful fruit. Why not grow your own citrus from seed? I've had seedling oranges with great flavor... wonderful (though somewhat small) pink grapefruit germinated from the seeds of a store-bought fruit... I've seen beautiful lemons from seed... go for it! And if you don't like what you get, graft! There's nothing to lose. So how long does it take citrus to germinate? About 1-2 months. Keep them watered but not soaked and soon your citrus will germinate. I'm growing lemons from seed in this video, but Key lime seeds germinate and grow into great trees, as do every other citrus I've seen.

    OMG...I'm a dead lemon tree grower...lol! I'm currently growing lemon trees from seeds that I let dry for many weeks. The only preparation I took was to de-husk the seeds before sprouting them in a ziplock bag. The seeds DID take about two weeks to sprout, but they seem to be doing fine....got'em indoors under a grow-light cuz it's a little cool herein North Texas right now.

    So, if you have the room, plant a lot of trees. If any of them are awesome, great! And I would start grafting right away, leaving a branch or two of the original tree. If it is horrible, you have been getting good fruit from it. If it is awesome, you can get more grafts from it!

    If you put your thumbnail into the pointy top of the citrus seed and peel back, you can get the seeds to germinate way faster rather than waiting for the husk to decompose and rot away.

    I have what I think is a Sour Orange tree (N FL) and it came up from a kumquat that froze back. So I assumed the seeds will produce the very much wanted Sour Orange tree.I understand they only live in N FL and this one is around 13 yo since the kumquat froze out 13 years ago. I just ignored it in the back of my property until it began producing yellow fruit which were very sour. Each year they have grown sweeter and then last year they turned orange. This year they just produce all year round and are in amongst other oaks and we did nothing to grow them. No water, fertilizer, care, trimming. I just discovered that the Sour Orange tree only grows in N FL and was good for marmalade yes, but super good for Sour Orange Pie made just like Key Lime Pie. So I tried growing the seeds - I dried them out and of course they never grew. Then in March 2019 I planted 3 seeds in an earthbag expecting nothing. I have 2 little babies growing wonderfully now. They are 2-3 inches tall and I'm very excited to see what happens next. I don't know anything about raising them but will search YT for answers. So glad I just discovered you and will go back over your videos to search for answers. By the way, the tree is 25 feet tall and leaning heavily into the sunny space it gets so we are trimming out all the overgrowth of the wild grapes to allow more space for sun. I don't dare fertilize or anything yet.

    If I started quite a few seeds, and grafted young seedling trees with my great orange trees I have here, would they grow fruit sooner because of the graft (provided I do not kill them by grafting them), as I would be adding on a mature graft? Thanks for the video(s)

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes - they would fruit a lot faster. When you take scion wood or a bud from a mature citrus, it's all ready to fruit. No juvenile waiting period like a seedling as it grows. Once grafted, the top of the tree will think it's an adult. This is why you'll sometimes see little citrus trees for sale that are a couple of foot tall and in bloom or fruit. Seedlings never do that. Go for it!

    I started mine: orange, tangerine, grapefruit, and lime, last year from seed and are coming in quite well. mine sprouted in a week and a half (one of the few successes using the paper towel method to sprout seeds). i did clip the tips of the seeds to break that natural waterproof covering they have. they are doing rather well as they approach the one year mark.

      Most work on both, but bud grafting is usually used for citrus - likely because it doesn't really have a dormancy period like apple, so buds are more likely to take.

      David The Good The thing about bonsai fruit trees is that part of the pruning process involves removing branches usually before they can bloom. If it starts fruiting, the tree's energy will be more focused on ripening them, and less on continuing the growth of the tree. But it's definitely possible to get them to fruit too! I'm hoping someday!

      The rootstock has no influence on the genetics of the germinating seeds. However, Citrus is fairly unique in having many cultivars that produce exact clonal copies by seed. Some cultivars produce 100% clonal seedlings, others produce 0%.
      Dancy mandarins are nearly 100% clonal. Pomelos, Temple tangors and Meyer lemons are 0% clonal. Most cultivars produce both clonal and non-clonal seedlings.

      Cloned? As in, grafted or reproduced via cuttings? Yes on both of those. I'm not sure how easy they are to reproduce by tissue culture, though.

    I keep getting told that the citrus grown from seed won't produce fruit. That is not true?

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  Před 7 lety +2

      No, not true at all. They will produce fruit but it takes time. Also depends on the variety how long it takes for them to bloom. You can see a variety of producing seedling citrus trees here - all of them fruited: czcams.com/video/9qY8eTPwvow/video.html

    I grew a nice little tree from clementine seeds. Alas, the leaves are all going yellow. It gets water regularly. I read it might be iron deficiency??? 🤔

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  Před 3 lety +1

      Might be too much water. Citrus are sensitive to wet soil.

      They can take a month or more. Just wait. Also, warmer is better - if it's chilly, they'll sit.

    CRAP.
    Well those seeds are useless now.
    But I did put them in a sprouting jar so I'll just experiment & confirm they are dead.
