Today I demonstrate how to germinate citrus seeds. Planting citrus seeds is easy, provided you do not let the seeds dry out. Plant them fresh from the fruit, if possible, or keep them slightly damp until you can plant. I have grown multiple citrus trees from seed and visited a dozen seedling citrus trees which were bearing wonderful fruit. Why not grow your own citrus from seed? I've had seedling oranges with great flavor... wonderful (though somewhat small) pink grapefruit germinated from the seeds of a store-bought fruit... I've seen beautiful lemons from seed... go for it! And if you don't like what you get, graft! There's nothing to lose. So how long does it take citrus to germinate? About 1-2 months. Keep them watered but not soaked and soon your citrus will germinate. I'm growing lemons from seed in this video, but Key lime seeds germinate and grow into great trees, as do every other citrus I've seen.

Same tbh. I love this guy. What a good dude.
Grew up hearing my dads stories working in the citrus fields of California and he always grows citrus everywhere he can growing citrus in containers of terra cotta pruning them uniquely according to their pots. Has a special place in my heart
Definitely doing this - today! I have my first Myer lemon for the year and will plant the seeds today. Thanks!
Mary
That's great! Go for it.
Really appreciate the encouragement and the advice. I hope all is well with you and your loved ones
You too
This is fantastic! I just pulled seed from a orange today that my kids wanted to to learn how to grow a tree from a seed. Thanks for making this video!
That's marvelous, Jolene. I just planted a few grapefruit seeds with our 4-year-old yesterday. Have fun!
Did the orange seed grow
I really want a variety of citrus that is currently illegal to ship to my state. This is the perfect solution!
OMG...I'm a dead lemon tree grower...lol! I'm currently growing lemon trees from seeds that I let dry for many weeks. The only preparation I took was to de-husk the seeds before sprouting them in a ziplock bag. The seeds DID take about two weeks to sprout, but they seem to be doing fine....got'em indoors under a grow-light cuz it's a little cool herein North Texas right now.
You're the definition of "making learning fun"! :D
Thank you, Julie. I'm hoping to get my picture in the encyclopedia under that phrase.
You always have the info I need! Thank you
So, if you have the room, plant a lot of trees. If any of them are awesome, great! And I would start grafting right away, leaving a branch or two of the original tree. If it is horrible, you have been getting good fruit from it. If it is awesome, you can get more grafts from it!
I planted .meyer lemon. Blood orange. Apple seeds in November 2020 .its November 2021 now and I have 10 little trees about 10 inches high and I couldn't be happier .thanks David you are the good this world needs. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Meyers are hybrids so u won't get a meyer lemon off it.
Encouraging! That it is I was looking for, thank you! thank God for the seeds and sun...
Has anyone ever told you that you never blink?! You blinked three times in the entire video. I was very struck by it. It does convey focus and held my attention. Also loved this video and your channel is amazing! 👁🧿👁🗨
Thanks for sharing the info I like starting from seed
Stumbled on to your channel with regard to planting citrus seeds. Just so happens, my seeds are calamansi. I'm excited! Subscribed ✌
Welcome, Leanne.
Its amazing how, the fact that the seed(s) die so easily, just happens to be the reason why some of us fail. And, I only found out about it here. Subscribed.
Thank you. Yes - it is amazing. Seeds can be very different from species to species.
I'll have to give it a go, Thanks!
Haha! Your attitude is so awesome!
Outstanding honey! Great content. Subscribed. Thanks
I appreciate it. Welcome.
Thanks David!
Subscibed😁
That looks like “jeruk purut” in Indonesia. It has very strong citrusy aroma but in the good way. People here use the peel more than the fruit itself to flavor the food
Thanks for the identification!
ok ok this is a very helpful video, thank you!
You had me at "Let's Plant"
Trying a Meyer lemon this weekend. Because the fruit was sooo delicious
I love plants so whenever I see a seed I start to hatch it out into a tree
also with the winds getting stronger a short tree seems to survive
thanks for the info....now I understand why my seeds never started. I had thought they needed to dry out.....so thanks!!!!
You are very welcome.
Enjoyed this immensely… I have 6 white grapefruit trees 🌳 from 🌱 and 2 tangerine 🍊 🌳🌳 they all bore fruit at the 10-12 year mark… I really want to sprout seedlings and sell them since each grapefruit has 40 seeds and the tangerines 10-15
If you put your thumbnail into the pointy top of the citrus seed and peel back, you can get the seeds to germinate way faster rather than waiting for the husk to decompose and rot away.
I have what I think is a Sour Orange tree (N FL) and it came up from a kumquat that froze back. So I assumed the seeds will produce the very much wanted Sour Orange tree.I understand they only live in N FL and this one is around 13 yo since the kumquat froze out 13 years ago. I just ignored it in the back of my property until it began producing yellow fruit which were very sour. Each year they have grown sweeter and then last year they turned orange. This year they just produce all year round and are in amongst other oaks and we did nothing to grow them. No water, fertilizer, care, trimming. I just discovered that the Sour Orange tree only grows in N FL and was good for marmalade yes, but super good for Sour Orange Pie made just like Key Lime Pie. So I tried growing the seeds - I dried them out and of course they never grew. Then in March 2019 I planted 3 seeds in an earthbag expecting nothing. I have 2 little babies growing wonderfully now. They are 2-3 inches tall and I'm very excited to see what happens next. I don't know anything about raising them but will search YT for answers. So glad I just discovered you and will go back over your videos to search for answers. By the way, the tree is 25 feet tall and leaning heavily into the sunny space it gets so we are trimming out all the overgrowth of the wild grapes to allow more space for sun. I don't dare fertilize or anything yet.
It will take a few years for them to fruit, but they are not hard to grow. Just make sure they don't get overwatered - they'll keep growing! Great work.
Cool, I thought you had to cut open the outer shell on the seed.I am so going to give this a try:) BTW, I enjoy your videos so much!!!
Thank you Diane. Opening the seeds may speed it up but I haven't found it to be necessary.
Anna's Orange!! 😍
Thanks for this info. I didn't know that they died so easily. Now I do. Thanks again.
You bet.
Thank you for having this video! I have lime seeds. SO when you say water them and for get... how much water do you use the first time
If I started quite a few seeds, and grafted young seedling trees with my great orange trees I have here, would they grow fruit sooner because of the graft (provided I do not kill them by grafting them), as I would be adding on a mature graft? Thanks for the video(s)
Yes - they would fruit a lot faster. When you take scion wood or a bud from a mature citrus, it's all ready to fruit. No juvenile waiting period like a seedling as it grows. Once grafted, the top of the tree will think it's an adult. This is why you'll sometimes see little citrus trees for sale that are a couple of foot tall and in bloom or fruit. Seedlings never do that. Go for it!
I started mine: orange, tangerine, grapefruit, and lime, last year from seed and are coming in quite well. mine sprouted in a week and a half (one of the few successes using the paper towel method to sprout seeds). i did clip the tips of the seeds to break that natural waterproof covering they have. they are doing rather well as they approach the one year mark.
Debbie Thomas how tall are they? Do they grow fast?
They are 1-2feet tall. One has branch spread of 2 feet wide. I'm not expecting blossoms for 2017 (jan/Feb begins year two for most of them).
These are from store brought fruit. I had them under lights making an old ammoir into a mini grow box with foil on the walls last winter and outside, still in pots during the summer. I think they grew pretty quick.
Debbie Thomas Thank you for your reply!
Your welcome.
I wish I could post a pic of the hydroponic "lemon tree" I've got growing in my closet. I've heard they hate "wet feet", but you can't get any wetter than water, can you? lol! Can't wait to see what kinda fruit it yields!
Is the water aerated?
@@mrtechie6810 nope. Kratky method for 8 months before it got potted up. Still doing very well. I'm gonna make a video about the process soon. Hope you'll like and subscribe. 👌🏼
@@theworkingmansgarden7638 I am using NFT myself. It seems to be dependent on oxgenation. I'm even growing carrots without substrate!
I just googled it and apparently even cacti can be grown hydroponically!
Big trees from little tiny seeds.
Coast Redwood
Western Red Cedar.
Trees are awesome.
Actually many citrus seeds produce new plants genetically identical to the parent. This is generally true for oranges, grapefruit, key limes, mandarins, kumquats, calamondins and trifoliate hybrids.
i agree! way more gratifying when you plant from seed! my wife has 2 grapefruit and 2 lemon trees that she planted from seed they are approximately 2ft tall! And we live in upstate New York!
Perfect! I had a friend in Tennessee with a nice potted grapefruit tree growing under the skylight in his house.
Out of curiosity, I've seen people remove the seed from the fibrous membrane that covers the seeds. I noticed you didn't do it, any particular reason why?
Thanks for the great video. Question, can any type of graft (whip tongue, side veneer, cleft) be used for any species, like citrus and apple. I have citrus and apple trees. Can I use any method of grafting on them or do only certain methods work for certain species? Thanks, cheers
Most work on both, but bud grafting is usually used for citrus - likely because it doesn't really have a dormancy period like apple, so buds are more likely to take.
I know the feeling. People get offended at my planting of seeds all the time. It's strange how triggered people get over the idea that a fruit may not look like the other fruits at the store.
hi david I planted my lemon tree. the embryo is growing.... and the first leaves are like the shell will they come in time when the tree gets stronger..... Please help???????? Sally
Just started some Meyer lemon and Key lime seeds tonight. The lime seeds had much weaker inner shells, but I think/hope they'll germinate anyway. I'm planning on making bonsai out of them!
They should grow. Bonsai - that would be amazing. Would love to see how that turns out.
David The Good The thing about bonsai fruit trees is that part of the pruning process involves removing branches usually before they can bloom. If it starts fruiting, the tree's energy will be more focused on ripening them, and less on continuing the growth of the tree. But it's definitely possible to get them to fruit too! I'm hoping someday!
The shaping is fascinating to me. I did an afternoon of reading on it once - it's amazing. I don't think I have the patience.
ok ok you won the staring contest
Add plenty of sand to your potting mix it will help lots
if you have mandarin or mineola or even orange trees and want sweet fruit you must give it rock salt not too much just make small x trenches around the tree and give it salt and the fruit will be bigger and sweeter
hi I have a lemon tree seedling it has two leaves at the top it oesnt seem to be growing branches.. Please help me Sally
hi I put some lemon seeds in a paper towel how long do you leave the seeds to germinate ??????? please help????????
You are the 💣✌️🙏🏽💜
You can also use sour Orange on pork pork ,yuca and other foods, vegetables. That's what Latin people use it for.
hi one of my lemon seeds has two roots what does this mean????? please help,
I have a question was there any reason why you didn't remove the seed coat layer? Or just a preference to plant as is
There is no need - they sprout fine with them on.
I have some Portugal lime seeds that I scooped out from my mother limes but I put them in most paper towel and a plastic bag and yet they started to get mold...are they still good? What should I do...just plant them in the soil?
Don't wanna lose them because they're very juicy
Plant right away.
how long does the embryo get?????????? please help
I read online that we need to clip the seed and peel the outer shell, do I need to do that?
No, I never do
2 week old seeds growing fine after soaking and shelling first
Great work!
yes fine
I bought a big grapefruit but the seeds are so tiny.....how will I be able to take the skin off
i love this!!
hi david I'm growing lemon seeds in a pot how long until I see the germinate they have only been in since 14.04.18Please help
It usually takes about two weeks for them to sprout.
Next on TBS, "The Citrus Games."
Question. Do citrus seeds come true to seed of the root stock or scion or a blend? Just wondering because I planted bunch of Meyer lemons and satsuma oranges.
No, they won't blend with the root stock. They generally come pretty true to whatever the fruit was. It's not exact, but I also haven't had a bad seed-grown citrus fruit yet.
David The Good awesome. I live in coastal Alabama so I intend to have multiple types of citrus even if I have to build them a greenhouse and buy them electric blankets. Lol
The rootstock has no influence on the genetics of the germinating seeds. However, Citrus is fairly unique in having many cultivars that produce exact clonal copies by seed. Some cultivars produce 100% clonal seedlings, others produce 0%.
Dancy mandarins are nearly 100% clonal. Pomelos, Temple tangors and Meyer lemons are 0% clonal. Most cultivars produce both clonal and non-clonal seedlings.
No wonder my saved citrus seeds didn't sprout, but my immediately planted loquat did. 3-yrs old and it's blooming, maybe fruit this year.
Excellent - I hope you get some! That's quick for a loquat.
Can mango seeds dry out or do they also have to be kept moist to germinate?
They need to be planted pretty quickly - the embryos inside will dry out and die if you wait too long.
i planted lemon seeds today... 1.02.18 with their skins off... how long do I wait for them to come up?????? please help.. Sally
Is it growing?
That looks like an Osage Orange! lol I'm not sure but I don't think Osage is a citrus because they grow in temperate climates, as opposed to true citrus, but I would have to research more about that to be sure...
hi ive put the lemons seeds in the soil and one of the brown shells has fallen off is this good?????
The embryo is inside that shell - it should be okay. Watch and wait.
Hey David, is there an update on these babies?
The one I kept is a few feet tall now.
hi david I'm trying to grow lemon seeds by peeling all of there skins off them please advice???????????????????
Don't peel the skins - just plant them, fresh from the fruit, not dried out on the counter. Wait about 1-2 months and they'll sprout.
OMG, I'm a lemon seed killer!!! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!
The police are on the way.
Bahahahaha
my lemon seeds have sprouted what do I do next ????? please help Sally
When they get a few leaves - or even now - you can transplant them into their own pots of potting soil.
So my citrus trees are about a foot to 1.5 feet tall.. but I've got twisted leaves at the top. That means I've got the citrus greening, don't I?
No, not at all. That may just be leaf miners or something else. A lot of things like citrus. If you can email me some decent pictures, I might be able to nail down the problem for you. I'm david @ the survival gar dener.com. (Take out the spaces and you have me).
you're so funny :) thanks a lot for this material! :)
Can i plant citrus seeds in winter? Thanks
Yes. But they'll want to be in a warm spot to germinate.
people who do thumbs down have issues... like thumbs falling off and such.
David, can citrus trees be cloned easily?
Cloned? As in, grafted or reproduced via cuttings? Yes on both of those. I'm not sure how easy they are to reproduce by tissue culture, though.
Hi my lemon tree look llike a seedling
I keep getting told that the citrus grown from seed won't produce fruit. That is not true?
No, not true at all. They will produce fruit but it takes time. Also depends on the variety how long it takes for them to bloom. You can see a variety of producing seedling citrus trees here - all of them fruited: czcams.com/video/9qY8eTPwvow/video.html
good on ya keep up the good work
*Face Palm*
That's why. . . Thank you for the video!
Heh. You bet. Thank you.
I grew a nice little tree from clementine seeds. Alas, the leaves are all going yellow. It gets water regularly. I read it might be iron deficiency??? 🤔
Might be too much water. Citrus are sensitive to wet soil.
@@davidthegood Thanks!
my citrus seeds have bee in since December 17 not seen any results please help ???
They can take a month or more. Just wait. Also, warmer is better - if it's chilly, they'll sit.
I took the brown shell off when the lemon seed had rooted and I think the stork in the middle is growing is this normal please reply
how long to germinate lemon trees and fruit Please help
hi david I'm still waiting for the lemon seeds from Christmas I live in the united kingdom ive put them on the bathroom window sill. please help???????????????
Thumbs up 👍🏽
why do lemon seeds take so long to germinate????????????
Sally - are you okay? Your comments seem very strange.
That is not lemon
tried that didn't work
CRAP.
Well those seeds are useless now.
But I did put them in a sprouting jar so I'll just experiment & confirm they are dead.
