  • In part 2, i overhaul the valvebody, showing an update with a boost plate and replacing the 3-4 accumulator spring and making sure all valves move free. Good news, i got my hands on the big spring that is in the overdrive section so i will be showing that in next weeks video. Thanks for watching, hope everyone is enjoying the series

Been a mechanic most of my life, but have never rebuilt an auto. I have a 44RE and for a while has shown it’s age. Recently I had one of the solenoids replaced. The one that controls shifts from 1st to 2nd, if my terminology is correct. The other day things went bad. It’s would rev up a little to much in first and not shift. Got it to shift by switching shifter positions. Then I experienced slipping. Now it has a real bad whining/squealing while parked in R N D 2 1. Increasing the revs in the respected gear, it kind of goes away, and makes what sounds like a hydraulic bypassing type sound. Like a power steering pump bypassing. I remembered days before experiencing a pulsing in acceleration whiling backing into driveway. Thanks for your video. I may attempt to rebuild it for the experience.

A great thank you for your videos, Gary, I've seen them all that have to do with this transmission. I definitely will use these videos to fix my 42RE transmission, I have the same issue with my transmission. If you have any of your videos up for sale, please let me know so I can buy them to have them as reference. Thank you again for your expertise. God bless you.

Hi, I have a question, I like your videos and I have a situation with my Cherokee Laredo 99 4x4, the transmission was acting erratic , changing from 1st to 4th and so on, I changed the oil, I changed the filter, for about 10 minutes it was working again , then it stayed in Neutral, I turned it off, started again , drove for 2 minutes and it went back to neutral, I did the same thing a couple of times and it kept on going back to neutral, I’m not sure what else to try, can you help me , any idea why that would be?

Great video series. Accumulating parts to retro fit a 2000 46re to 1999 model version. have comb, shield, reverse adapter by sonnax, overdrive and harness but read only one place the block needs changed as well, is this the case? the solenoid clips in with the shield on the 2000 and inside the block on a 1999 model correct? will the clip work on the inside of a 2000 for the 1999 solenoid? or do i need a 1999 block as well? Thanks again for taking the time to video, definitely increases build time and complexity.

Do you have a video of how to assemble the overdrive unit and replacement of circlips. My 42re has lost 4th gear and o/d everything else is Ok. Your videos are excellent but have skipped this repair, ie compressing the spring etc

@@GaryFerraro The 1st,2nd, 3rd and reverse shifts work fine however no 4th gear or reverse.
when the pan was removed to determine the fault, a segment of snap ring was found in the bottom of the pan, leading me to believe that a snap ring may have broken and become detached from inside the overdrive unit, The question regarding the spring was that if this snap ring needs to be replaced, then the 800+ lb spring tension problem will need to be addressed. Thanks for your prompt reply.

Best regards, I repaired an a518 transmission, the one that comes with only two solenoids. Overdrive and lockup. I completely repaired it, cleaned the valve body. The problem that I have is that it changes from 1a. to 2a. and 2a. to 3a. At very high revs, the engine has to pass 3,000 rpm for the transmission to shift. I have not been able to find the problem, I have lowered the transmission 4 times and I can't find anything that is wrong. any suggestion

Check the throttle cable adjustment and make sure it is not sticking, make sure it is returning, if hanging up may shift late like it's in kickdown

Gary great videos. I am rebuilding a 44re and there us no springs for the plastic accumulator. I heard that it can be ran without them. All other springs are present. @@GaryFerraro yes I believe so. There is chalk writing on the main shaft drum that says A-500. So I figured it broke and they had it overhauled. I called summit racing and they have the lower spring. Which I am sure it had the lower spring and I am thinking when 1 of my boys used my magnetic flashlight it may have caught on and got lost. But whatever happened is crazy, I use small zip lock baggies and write on them where the bolts go and different pieces. It's highly unusual for me to lose a part. However I have taken to long doing this with work and life. But I am nearly done and I didn't know there was a top spring until I seen you put 1 in in video. I looked up part images and it shows top spring (valve body side) I guess it's actually the bottom.
