We had a "party line" at our cottage because we shared it with a couple other cottages. So if it rang a certain way we knew it was for us. This was in the 90s. I'm pretty sure that was what it was mostly designed for. When I was a kid I used to pick up and listen to other ppls convos for a bit and then say something like "fart" and hang up. Since it was only shared with 5 other cottages it was pretty easy to figure out who it was. My grandparents were not impressed lol
