Kid gavilan is one of my favourite fighters of all time. His record at first glance is very deceiving but his names on there are absolutely amazing. He lost a lot of his last few bouts as he was older and near the end of his fighting years. Gavilan was one of the first fighters to popularise the bolo punch and use it as an actual attack rather then a show boat. Gavilan had one of the greatest chins in boxing history. Was never Knocked out once in 143 pro bouts. Thank you for this wonderful video as kid gavilan isn’t mentioned all that much in the boxing community.

@@marcusbailey3988 absolutely buddy. Times change and that’s how it always will be. Fighters don’t fight as regularly anymore which is understandable but not as amazing as most want. Especially when fighters decide to fight only once every year.
One of the most famous punches in boxing. Gavilan's bolo punch is right up there with Frazier's left hook..!
Now I know where Sugar Ray Leonard got his bolo punch from.. Along with others.

He thought he was better than welterweights of the 70 and 80s, but of course he wasn’t as good as Leonard or Duran in his prime, he was a little conceited about it they told me, but still a nice guy.
My grandfather's favorite fighter ever. I grew up listening to his memories of watching Gavilan on his first black and white TV in the 50s, and it's obvious why he was so popular. Incredible hand speed and a steel jaw!

a boxers career is like a candle. it shines beautifully but only shortly til the flame is put out. gavilans ending makes me sad to hear that he was alone at the end of it all despite the turmoil he put himself through to reach the top. only to be brought back down

I knew he fought as a pro, but it blows my mind to see him slugging it out with Kid Gavilan.

Wow,I have never heard that Ray Mancini and Mike Tyson put up funds to have the "KID" get a proper burial. Good job by them.you rarely hear about the good boxers do,but you hear the bad real quick.

Kid gavilan, the hawk possess probably the strongest chin in boxing 🥊 135 professional fights and was never stopped, truly an incredible accomplishment !
I have the Turner and Gavilan fight ranked within the top 20 greatest fights I’ve ever seen. However, I rank even greater and higher than the classy Gavilan-Turner slugfest, the 1st fight between fight Gil Turner and Johnny Saxon! Beautiful fighters … meager fight purses … no health benefits … no pensions … nearly all of them with records of over 100 fights … and nearly all of them suffering dementia as their careers wound down and no back up income to sustaining even a modicum life style of the average wage earner. They were deserving of more than the derelict lifestyle they were forced into … and when the cheering stopped … all of them were abandoned by those cheering mobs who once hailed each of them as conquering heroes.
Gil Turner was an underrated fighter himself as well Johnny Saxon
Back then it seemed fighters never held... they put their heads against the opponents shoulder and threw bombs. Another classic, well researched and tasteful vid. As good a tribute as KG could ask for.
You must’ve not looked at more old fights because they invented clenching and used it very often.

They are coming for us now. To think my family fled Cuba in 1959. And here I am 2nd generation American born and it's at our doorstep. I came from nothing, worked hard and built something and now I can see the morons at the gates.

Damn, Gil Turner was determined to win in front of his hometown audience that night! You can tell he was putting all of his weight into those shots. That was quite the war! I have noticed that a lot of Black fighters back then looked so similar in the era of the conk hair style.

Holy Monkey, what a fight between Gavilan and Turner, and the Ref, let them go at it, It looked like the Ref was gonna let Him go out on His shield before he stopped it. You could almost feel the punches just watching it. Kudos to Mike Tyson and Friends, for giving this Legend a Proper Burial.
Man I can't wait for this! Kid Gavilan was not only one of the greatest boxers of all time, even ducked by the great Sugar Ray Robinson, but one for which many tuned into boxing on TV for. He sold tickets too! His bolo punch is legendary.
They fought twice. Second encounter was for ten rounds. If I remember correctly. But Ray did admit, not looking forward to fight Gavilan..

@@jesusarreguin6885 The first was 10 rounds and very close apparently. Some viewers thought the decision could have gone the other way. The second was 15 rounds with Robinson's Welterweight Championship on the line and Robinson made this one far more definitive.

The ending was tough, but I'm glad there were people that appreciated him long after he had passed.

Yes, what a fighter he was.
Never been a fan of Gavilan but...to walk up to Sugar Ray Robinson and tell him that he wasn't the champion until he beat him, man, that deserves a ton of respect and then some (most of us are not even 0.01% that confident). He was in some great actions fights and an all time great chin as well.
A note: the cane machete weights about 1 to 1,5lb (max) and the movement used to cut sugar cane is completely different than the punch (think about it). The Kid was an all time great P.R. man though, respect.

That fight at 6:08 with Gil Turner is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Those 2 savagely beat the hell out of each other the whole fight. What a win by the kid but DAMN that Turner fought like an animal. What a fight!

Tommy Bell was a very good fighter whose career got off to a bad start prior to aligning himself with legendary trainer Chickie Ferrera, and despite having 29 losses on his record he gave Sugar Ray two very tough fights. The Gavilan vs Gil Turner fight is probably my favourite fight I have in my collection, and a must see for any boxing fan. I don't think Gil was ever the same fighter again following that fight.

Just superb, Rich... another fascinating video on one of boxing's greats. Never finished in, what, 150 fights????? The footage from some of his bouts was very good, and showed that hybrid uppercut/hook. Gavilan moved very well, too. His peers, including Joe Louis, felt he was a great fighter. Thank you for another exceptionally interesting video.

When I was a kid he worked at the Villa Leo near Harrisburg Pennsylvania running the arcade and miniature golf course there I used to visit with him he had a scrapbook about his fights
Brilliant, but so sad how things turned out for him.
At least he now rests in dignity, recognised as the champion he was.

I was born and raised in Harrisburg Pa!! My Dad boxed at the PAL in the 50's. I never knew Gavilan was in Harrisburg! Do you know what years? I am assuming 1970's? Would have loved to have met him!

There's an awesome doc called champions forever. There's one on Ali, Frazier, Foreman and the he rest then there's a Latino one with interviews and footage of Gavilan, Carlos Ortiz, Duran Arguello,,,Duran and Chaavez. Its hard to find but has them all talking you threw their careers

Johnny Bratton was the NBA welterweight champion when Gavilan beat him. Vacant undisputed championship
This man was the one who invented the Bolo punch. Those managing him ripped him off, just like did Joe Louis.
Managers/Promoters/The mob ripped off most of the top fighters of those days.
Ike Williams, Gavilan, Johnny Bratton, Lloyd Marshall, black or white, those leeches fleeced these great fighters and left them penniless.
He did not "invent' the bolo punch. MW champion from the 30's Ceferino Garcia used it often.

I've seen a few of his fights and definitely one of the best ever I think a good few of his early losses where fights that he threw because he would always come back and beat a fighter way better the next time
Like many fighters of his era The Kid was told to lose some. Remember in those days it was not so important to have a zero lose record. He won the important ones. Television has made the no loss record very important. They want to highlight fighters who have never lost. In the Golden age a loss did not diminish your status. The only top guys not influenced by Carbo were Robinson, he would not allow it and he was very proud, and Louis. Robinson paid the price for not playing ball with the mob. They shut him out of the LW title and it took years to get the WW title.
@@Thelategreatjohnnybratton the 0 on a modern day fighter is absolute nonsense because mostly they are given opposition they will out class buy a huge margin. today lomachenco was a world champ arfter 10 Pro fights and we're told arfter 12 he's the best lightweight of all time I'm pretty sure Duran could of gone a few rounds with him and tyson fury wouldn't of been in the top 15 heavyweights but I've heard commentators saying he on par with ALI 🤯🤯🤯

I made the mistake of giving kid Gavilan a microphone in Miami. He started rambling, I got the microphone back quickly and gave him his props.
People don’t know, but Jose Sulaiman and the WB C paid his rent in his declining years.
Outside of the guy that he beat for the title, and the Cuban, Ray Robinson find a bunch of nobodies at 1:47.

Do you really think Carmen Basilio beats Leonard? Carmen trashed Robinson. "If he was the best fighter ever, how did an onion farmer beat him?"
I got to meet all of these guys, talk to them in person. Sir, are you getting your information from moldy Ring magazines? Or did you spend extended time with Ray, Carmen and Leonard?

Oh wow 4:00 to 4:08 the Ray Robinson and kid G fight was DULL, wow I just knew that you were going to say that it was a Frenzy of a fight, cause of the still shot that Robinson landed on Gavilan the left Hook like uppercut, there's no footage of that fight anywhere.
