Framing Chimney and Plumbing Vent Pipes Thru Metal Roof
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 11. 2020
- In this episode of Cabin in the Woods we help the plumber put a vent pipe thru the metal roof and then we finish the chimney framing as well as all other rough framing. After this episode we should start to see the interior finishes come together and it will be awesome.
I can't stress enough how much we love using the Stabila LAX300G line laser. It is such a time saver when finding plumb and level while framing.

With Ryan's czcams.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE plan I was like one taken by the hand and led step by step from start to finish. Thank you very much Ryan!
07:59 “do your best, caulk the rest”. I love it:)
Hey man what's up? I love your work i really dont know your name though i knows Greg name lol that guy needs training haha but hey man im 31 years old i run my own Roofing business in South Bend, Indiana just wondering if you have any pointers?
Fantastic tip on turning that boot sideways!
Sometimes I think I’m pretty good till I watch more of your videos… lol
Only OCD people see this. You do what you have to do to seal it up. It looks great from my computer screen. Great job boys.
I ain’t OCD but I am watching this
I always enjoy watching videos in Korea. Good luck~
Diamond instead of square? My mind is actually blown 🤯 thanks for the tip.
I know I say this almost every video, but I swear I'm going to make them come build my place in TN when the time comes. They care about their work and they know what they are doing. Legit builder/contractor and skilled tradesmen.
I would pay serious bucks for a "do your best and caulk the rest" T-shirt. Can you make that happen? Its really a wonderful mantra to live by and get over anxieties of day to day live. By me even trying something new and giving it my best, I'm going to do better than 95% of people who never try. And that aint bad!
You guys do a great job. I always learn something watching your videos. Thanks for sharing.
You guys are killing it on this build!
great team, congratulations Kyle.💯💯💯👍
Great build series really enjoying it.
Oh my...cutting a hole in that beautiful roof...that's sooooooo much a bummer.
What an awesome wood plans!!! Very Pleased!
Heck yea man nice job on that chimney love it !!!!
Little tip we’ve used in the electrical field that works with any rubber boot having to slide over anything when it’s hot out and it’s hard to slide the rubber grommet over the structure use hand sanitizer as a lubricant it makes the gaskets extremely slippery and it vaporizers in a matter of seconds and leaves a factory seal.
Looks great. Thanks for posting.
Excellent great episode 🏴
Such an awesome build 👍
One hell of a tradesman Kyle!!!! Freakin ROCK !!!!!!!!
Flashback to my roofing days, when I would put a ring of caulking around the pipe at the right height so that when I lower the boot in place, the last 1/4" of drop will smear the caulking to give it a good seal from the inside out.
00:39 - "Whenever you're ready Greg I'm gonna shove this up"
Boyish humor never gets old
Looking good, keep it going 👍
Looking great!
Nice weather for working indoors. The snow looks awesome. Large snowflakes must be warm snow.
Can of black spray paint to give the pvc a finished look against the black roof.
I was thinking the very same thing!
Wondered if Kyle would fab a tube out of leftover roof metal to match, and rivet a hardwire cloth to prevent birds from dropping in (methane death).
i don't know why he even used pvc pipe. you can use ABS pipe for air venting
@@AssDust I had to go Google to double-check my memory. ABS is not UV stable and over time will crack and crumble away if left out in the elements. Do not use it as exposed vent stack.
Use a bonding primer with a brief scuff prior to finish paint, it won’t peel ;)
Wish I was up there right now in that weather I love it
See all the leaves in the gutter? Here in West Aus the gum leaves are a lot narrower with the flowers having a stamen that will clog up practically ANYTHING! (But not quite as good as Jacaranda flowers will! People with pool filters just LOVE jacaranda season.)
What I use is an ag pipe sized to sit in the gutter underneath the brackets. Ag pipe is the coils of slotted drainage pipe generally used for French drain type installs. The ag pipe extends OVER the down pipe & allows water to flow to the down pipes & every few years I lift it up & clean out the leaf mass. Had them in for abt 10 years now. Just a thought....
Loved the aerial ballet 😂
Looks nice guys
Why did I get Deja vu all over again as you installed the vent flashing?
Great job
15:24 - Who else thought Greg's head was about to be smacked into the ceiling?
get a black picture pipe sleeve with the magnet bottom plate to cover the screwed plate. also just a thought. an elevated fire place is really nice. just about 10-14 inches. you can sit on the edge. dry things. easier angle to look at. I don't think it would work in this case because of the windows but just for future projects!
Great video
You guys do amazing work. Id love to build a barndaminum someday
I hope your client invests in some kind of gutter guard. Climbing up there for a leaf clean out would be a real pain in the arse!
Already done lol good call
Vent out the gable ends...thats what we do in the washington cascade mountains...it keeps the snow from breaking the pipe during a "roofalanch". Also keeps penatrations of of the metal panel.
Hey Kyle 7:37 that was me calling to see if that PVC could be painted black. That fireplace is going to look great
Here in the UK we have air admittance valves with can be fitted above the highest point of the waste system, usually the sink. These allow air into the system but don't allow any of the foul gasses to escape into the building. It saves running a vent pipe up above the building and putting holes in the roof.
These are only allowed in some jurisdictions. In mine (US Midwest state) we do not allow AAVs at all.
Illinois allows AAV’s to be considered mechanical vents. Could have used it here
Thanks. I'm always curious on the different rules across the pond
Stack-type air admittance valves shall conform to ASSE 1050. Individual and branchtype air admittance valves shall conform to ASSE 1051
@@anton4video interesting. I wonder if my jurisdiction is being unnecessarily prudent then in disallowing those. I guess we don’t really have many people asking and people always an to find a code compliant way without them.
They may be erring on the side of caution because those are easier so they may assume people will always choose that over a better passive install. Any device that requires maintenance or has moving parts may/will fail some time and cause problems. Just a matter of what year/decade. Trusting the general populace to do recurring maintenance and check things is a wild chase.
Some timing there , sir. You got the hole done before the wet stuff!
I live just east of dekalb good timing on finishing your exterior stuff haha
A big giant cap on that chimney would make it look so much better. I don’t know exactly what it’s called but essentially a giant rectangular bird cage that would come off the top of the rock probably 16” with a roof on top of it. That way there isn’t just a little pipe sticking out of the top. The proportions are odd with that little pipe coming out of such a large chimney.
i tell ya, what an angle !
Would be nice to see some protection for those gutters. New construction and already full of leaves. Enjoy the videos and love your attention to detail.
Already done
It might help if you guys to pass on to the contractor that there is a lot of debris in the gutters will cause blockage.....Great video almost a Xmas edition with the snow....Building is looking real sweet....Stay Safe RRB
He is the contractor if I'm not mistaken.
@RR Buildings get the flex tape for windows and door sils. and cut a single piece for the while you drilled. if water does intrude the pipe boot its an extra layer and ontop of that it helps with humidity and water absorption into your now unprotected sheathing and metal roof edge that no longer has paint because you drilled through it. then i would fire caulk or silicone caulk that for an air and water tight seal under that boot
I am addicted to these videos Kyle! Your attention to detail and desire for quality work is really satisfying!
With regard to the vent stack, is it against code to vent through your joist cavity half way up the wall or if there is plumbing on the mezzanine then further up one of those walls? Or is it against code to have the stack in an exterior wall?
In the south we say, caulk and paint makes a carpenter what he ain't.
One should come up with a forming tool that creates an upright edge on through holes.
Benson Stone Rocks. I have bought a lot from them.
One thing about a post frame building, comes with built in ladders using the wall strapping.
Good morning from St John Parish, Louisiana 15 Nov 20.
Why didn’t the owner go with perforated gutter covers to remove the need for cleaning out leaves from the gutters? The gutters are a long way from the ground.
Gutter covers installed now
Plumbing vent - best solution for looks is put a cupola at the ridge and run the plumbing vent up to the cupola. Then use louvers on the sides of the cupola to vent.
Pretty smart idea
Paint the white PVC pipe the same color as the roof.
That’s a great idea,
Nice idea but putting a cupola in most roofs is a major act of
construction technique and most of them screw into the roof and
supporting framework. Aside from looks is it really any easier?
@@pensive69 Considering cost does not seem to be a factor in this building, I like the idea of the cupola over the standard pvc boot.
Wish they used black abs. But so glad you put the boot on the diamond way
Oatey or somebody needs to make a painted or paintable cover that can fit over that screwed flange. Kyle could easily make one out of roof left-overs and glue it onto the corner screws with caulk, after inspection.
Great video series, Kyle! Also, great job on the project! Question, would it work to run the plumbing vents through the ridge cap at the roof peak (assuming there is attic space) in order to minimize snow and ice accumulation above the vent pipe?
Check out leaf filters. Love you videos I am working my way through them.
"Whenever you are ready Greg I'm gonna shove this up" said Kyle holding a massive pipe in his hands.
oh,dont worry, greg is allways ready, good catcher he is lol
Why no leaf guard on gutters?
I was wondering the same thing. That's kind of an important think to NOT forget!!
He mentioned that he is installing the covers right now.
Check his replies on the other comments.
6:24 - Insert the office meme of Michael yell out "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID"
11:15 - Another place for the office meme. LOL... Why are we being such dirty bastards this Sunday morning?
Another:
00:39 - "Whenever you're ready Greg I'm gonna shove this up"
spray the whole thing with flat black truck bed undercoating paint
That’s what we do with the ones we have installed, colour them close to the roof colour, then they disappear.
They need gutter guard or some type of color for the gutters. That’s way up off the ground. Cool video.
Isn't there a way to let the pipe come out of the side instead of the roof?
Yes, within most codes you can-BUT- the vent pipe must turn up and be terminated no less than 12 inches above the roof surface where it crosses. The idea of using cupolas and running the vent pipes to that point at the ridge (PVC pipe is relatively cheap and very easy to run), penetrating within the boundaries of the cupola. The cupola must be open sided, and clear for the vented gases and odors to flow upward and away. That would mask the vents and I think be a better architectural solution, but few builders or owners ever even think about it.
Blessings
big job, so with the fireplace setup, not sure if you mentioned during the process, but are you able to access the mortar/vent and flu components if they ever need maintenance or cleaning? or is that all permanently closed framed off and closed?
Just curious, how did you get your start in this line of work? Love watching your videos
Used chalk that you install windowsheild it work well with out putting alot of faster in CRL make the windshield install glue only come in black
mini vent air admittance valve by studor might work for the roof vent.
Thought the VTR was going to be 2”. Also that roof has a pretty flat pitch, I and Mose inspectors I know would have wanted that termination to be a bit higher. Paint it blue like the color of the sky, LOL
Is there any access for maintenance to the fire box or is it completely sealed in? What happens if the fan motor (if it has one) needs to be replaced?
Awesome videos.....
Couple questions....
The vent pipe, will that be painted to blend into roof?
The chimney stack, maybe paint that as well.
Just me two cents.
From PA, recommend anyone that can do the quality work that you do?
Hey, what drone do you use for your aerial footage? Thanks!
Another great series video, good work, Is there a time limit on the build Kyle??. Thanks from the UK.
Hunting season
Buen día!!! Exelente trabajo hacen .
Si pudieran poner subtitulos en idioma español sería muy bueno.
Igual.miro sus vídeos.
Saludos desde Uruguay Sudamerica💪👏👏👏👏

should have put gutter guards on. look at all those leaves
Why went pipe cannot go through the wall on the side of the building?
Tanks for another great video.
it can but depends local code as to whether allowed. For example, when I built my house a few years in Cook county (Chicago) it was not and I recently checked for Lake county (just north of Chicago) and it is.
I bet with some z closure and some aluminum coild stock you could come up with somthing. Gives me an idea💡
Why didnt you like the durock and decided plywood instead? Good job on the build you guys do great work. Enjoy your builds
Kyle, is it allowed in your jurisdiction to install an in-line vent that only led air in and is installed behind the wall?
Code still requires at least one vent through the roof.
Not sure you are following what the vent does- it acts to keep a hydraulic "lock" from slowing or stopping the flow of waste water out of the sewer piping. Gases must both enter and leave through these vents. FWIW, I was licensed plumber for 35 years- have run more poop pipe and vent than I can remember.
2015 IPC
Stack-type air admittance valves shall conform to ASSE 1050. Individual and branchtype air admittance valves shall conform to ASSE 1051
Can you go out the side wall with Plumbing? , or would the vent get sucked into the soffit?
There goes your dura rock partnership. LOL
Would of done 6" gutters with guards also
Hi Kyle love your videos can you ad the link to safety shoes that your wearing
the vent pipe could it not come out the side of the house instead i have seen that done around here before. were they come out the brick on the side. where the roofs are vaulted.
Isnt there anyway you can run the vents out the eves or side walls of the building? Or is code where its gotta go out the roof. I work on a towboat and all our vents on the boat come out the bulkheads at the top.
You going to run wiring for a TV above fireplace? Or, wiring for a wall art light?
Please show what you are using to control water going through the upper level decking.
Is that floor over a crawl space or a concrete slab floor? Curious if the JLG scissor lift will hold the weight over a crawl space wood floor?
'any other way'. You go out the wall and leave the roof intact, if you can. Like a stovepipe out a gable end.
Is there any way you can share total cost for the cabin in the woods? Very interested in doing something like this but trying to get an idea of what the price tag looks like.
Even a hose clamp on the vent pipe would have been better than caulk the boot is made to expand and contract with no secondary fastener needed but there are double sleeve covers to protect the inner boot and other options but all require extra cost and research I prefer a side vent so not to make any holes in the roof
In many areas you can vent out the gable end of the building. Ask your AHJ on each project.
I have seen some "flex" in the "Standard US Building Code" that would suggest that; don't even think about it before you get it cleared with your code authority and the inspector- or you will tear it out and redo it at your expense. There are several types of "to include" and "must be capable of" sorts of language- usually meaning the general contractors association would like this rule, so the book "conditionally" allows it. PS; There is no one "Standard Code"- they vary due to weather and other local conditions- there is a suggested body of code rules, mostly oriented toward the fire code.
Try those spyder hole saws they’re legit.
Perhaps make a faux chimney lookalike for that plumbing stack to hide it if it's that big of a deal. Can't imagine anyone would see it though. Me, I'd hit it with some primer and paint and it'd be all but gone 🍺
Hey Kyle, I'm surprised you don't have a cordless caulking gun yet.
edit: And it's awesome having a customer with the budget to do all this fun stuff isn't it? I always loved that. So much different than the type who is trying to save every penny to the point where they ask why you're using caulk A when caulk B is less money. Early on I fell into that trap a couple times. But I quickly got to the point where I would just turn down jobs because it wasn't worth all the callbacks for using cheap crap in the building process. Not to mention, often times when you use less than what you know are the best materials because that's what the customer wanted... Then it fails and that same customer talks smack about you to other contractors and other potential clients. Just not worth it.
He does czcams.com/video/n_8nz6fLxS0/video.html
@@frazer26 : Damn... I forgot about that video. I even remember watching it way back when it came out. I wonder why he isn't using the thing. Probably didn't have it with him.
What good are those rain gutters when they're full of trash?
