"I hold myself in contempt!" I want to weep every time I see that scene.
This is the movie that, believe it or not, convinced me that Jim Carrey could play a human being, not just a clown. He’s hilarious and the slapstick is classic, but he also has to play a convincing dad, not just a character like Ace Ventura, The Cable Guy, or Lloyd Christmas. I enjoyed all of those films, but he’s playing a character in those films, not a person. Here, he’s way over the top at times, but it’s relevant to the story. He doesn’t really go off until he realizes he can’t lie, so it makes sense. And I’ve known a lot of dads who are pretty goofy because they have young kids. So we’re not entirely in fantasyland . I still love the highly underrated The Majestic more, but I think this was a turning point in Jim Carrey’s career. I also like that Cary Elwes plays the boyfriend like a dork, but he’s not a bad person. He’s like Bill Pullman in Sleepless In Seattle. He’s a decent guy and he’s not entirely a villain.
I thought the exact same thing. I gained such unbelievable respect for him as an Actor. Don't get me wrong, Dumb & Dumber I could watch over and over again. But this one is sad, serious, hilarious & touching all in one. He is not too over the top. The bloopers are the best at the end. Must see. When Swoozie calls him out
Yeah, he's proved over the years that he can actually act. I loved him in The Majestic and in this one too. Did y'all ever see 23? Those crazy facial expressions he makes really translates well into a psychotic thriller role.

I'm just surprised no one mentions the Truman Show here. That was a very serious role. It was awakening to the reality that you are living in Plato's cave, and there is a more real reality outside of it.
And this was far from his first serious role. He had a small part in 1988's Dirty Harry offering "The Dead Pool", and a very serious supporting role in 1992's "Doing Time on Maple Drive", and gave a fine performance. But after 1994's smash hit "Ace Ventura", he got a lot of type casting; and who can blame him for going along with it? That "cha-ching" you heard was him making bank.
It should also be noted that both the first "Ace Ventura" movie and "Liar, Liar" were directed by the same dude. Tom Shadyac knew how to best use Jim Carrey without overindulging his wacky improvs. It's a fine line between brilliant and too much, and Tom knows how to walk it.
One of my favorites! Loved when the judge asked why he objected, and he said, "Cause it's devastating to my case!". Lol, I love this kind of humor.

@@GeronFletcher The house I bought was from the 1970s and re-fitted during the '90s and we found out that the previous owners stuffed a shit load of their belongings in the attic. What came along with it was the entire collection of original Disney VHS that my mom was collecting as well lol. Just thought it was funny. Reminded me of the Beanie Baby type fiasco.
Dumb & Dumber is one of his best. Jeff Daniels is also great in it as well.

Closest guy to Jim Carey is Robin Williams in my opinion, even though Robin is his own thing they just have a lot of similarities in their zaniness and impersonations and also the fact they both of them seem like they’d be fun dads
If the marriage was never legally binding, shouldn't the entire case be dismissed? Mrs Cole isn't legally entitled to anything except custody of the children.
The whole age legality is a whole different conversation.
In truth that court case would not end there, it would be mounths going into the age thing.
But this is a movie with a limit ti.e run on Jim's character, and so that had to ve the focus, and the court case just had to be completely shortcutted for that.
Still a great movie, just dont look to hard on how the law actual works.
There’s some issues with the legal premise in the movie. For one thing, she was in the marriage contract well after she turned 18 for over a decade with plenty of time to make such a claim so Mr Cole’s team could easily make the case that she implied the consent for continuing the marriage after she was 18 by staying in that relationship after the fact for so long, so while the marriage was voidable due to her age at the time, she needs to argue that and there’s a lot that argues against her position (such as that she ratified the prenup by her behavior of being in the marriage - and receiving all benefits of it - for the past decade). More importantly-they admitted to fraud, and contracts made under fraudulent pretenses is a great defense against her claims that “won” the case.
So glad you watched this. It's one of my favorite movies. Jim Carey nailed this role.
The 2 ace Ventura movies are classic and his first big hits. So those are worthy of a reaction as well

The actor who played Jerry also played Wesley in The Princess Bride. Funny the contrast in the two characters. :) Jim Carrey is incredible! All his movies are worth watching. X)
Exactly!!! The actor's name is Cary Elwes, and it makes it even crazier when you realize he is also the same person who plays Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the SAW franchise!!

Robin Williams in the early days was unmatched and an inspiration for jim Carrey.

The only one that comes close to Jim Carrey is the late John Ritter. If you haven't seen it, check out Three's Company (US version). It's one of the best sitcoms of all time. Pure comedic magic.

I love the AceVentura when nature calls. It’s so silly but it makes me laugh.
The stepdad ,Jerry, is played by Cary Elways who played Westley in The Princes Bride. He also played Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Men In Tights. And these types of movies are the best for Jim Cary... check out Mr. Poppers Penguuns, Yes Man and Bruce Almighty. Love your reviews.. get to giggle along side you and rewatch my favorite oldies but goodies.

Great reaction and great movie bro. Such an important message too. We all get caught up in "The American dream" type of thing and bury ourselves in our careers. We usually do it for the right reason, to care for our families and give them what they need but we get so caught up we let it dominate our life. Hard work is important but family is too. The one thing you can never get back is time.
As far as Jerry goes, just go to Boston and find someone else bro. You don't need this headache lol. You will never win.
Btw, I loved The Truman Show. Think it was one of his best serious roles.

Love this movie. Jim Carry is an amazing serious, physical, & comedic actor. One of the best coming from Canada. Jerry (played by actor Cary Elwes better known as Wesley in, "The Princess Bride" did a wonderful job as the "second fiddle". I liked how the "bloopers" are shown at the end of the movie. Hilarious! Glad you were able to watch this film!

Funny that you mentioned Mrs. Doubtfire because the only other actor I can think of who could have played this role is Robin Williams.
Great movie, but there's one glaring flaw in it: Jim's client being a minor at the time of the marriage doesn't just nullify the pre-nup, it nullifies the marriage entirely, so she gets nothing from her "husband's" estate. She could go after child support, assuming she can prove the kids are his (sounds kinda doubtful based off what we're told about her), but even then she's not guaranteed to win that. But I guess if they went through and closed that loophole, he couldn't win his case and it'd sour the movie some, so...

Jim Carrey is such an animated comedic that it's hard to find people who can match his very personalized style. Robin Williams, Rowan Atkinson, Chris Farley and Martin Lawrence are all known for their brilliant physical comedy. Jim Carrey stands out though.
Funny story, I was about 5 or 6 when this came out. After watching,I started running into the wall after wall. When asked what I was doing, I said I'm kicking my ass, do ya mind?! Lol

Jim Carrey’s silly movies are fun, but his best film is “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. It is a genius art film also starring Kate Winslet.
However, marriage is a legal contract as well. Her lying about the age would not only nullify the prenup but also the marriage. Therefore, they would have never been married.
Should point out, as much as we cheer for him in the end. You do have to wonder if he can really change his ways. I mean maybe with his family yes, but being a lair is a hard thing to change. I know first hand. My mom was one, and I became one. My mom sadly never stopped. It took me a long time to break the cycle and change myself.

If she was too young to sign the prenup then she was too young to sign the marriage license so the marriage was never legal and hence, no divorce is necessary. Which means no settlement. Big oops I guess

If that was true about her being 17 then the marriage wasn't legal in the 1st place so he doesn't owe her a dime Because if the prenuo wasn't legal then neither was a marriage license

If you see Dumb and Dumber, starring Jim Carrey and written and directed by the Farrelly brothers, and you like it, then you have to see another film called Kingpin. It's the Farrellys' magnum opus.
Jim Carrey actually beat the shit out of himself in the bathroom scene at the behest of the directors and producers. He wanted it to be as authentic as possible. Yes, some is exaggerated, but he did in fact, beat himself up.
