I had my first "commission" painting experience recently. Friend was like "I'll pay you to paint this demon for me," to which I had to tell him I won't take his money to do my hobby. But... if he was willing to provide food for game nights for a few weeks, we could call it square. He brought me the mini. I painted it (he did not have a brief other than "make it look cool") and delivered within a week. He loves it. I had fun and I got a few free meals out of it.
That's what I call winning.
Alternative title: Man yells at sea gulls, sometimes paints.
Also: we need an intro to your cat.
Haha, the cat intro is coming!
I love CZcams videos that achieve their message in 5 seconds. Keep them coming please!
I was going for the record! hahaha
The trick for doing marble slabs is f-ing genius.
This looks fanfarkintastic! Very much appreciate your 'brand' regarding the low impact and low stress techniques, and Yeah, Man, that marble was crazy good!!
Thanks, Lucy! Trying to balance brand integrity and getting the views is an ongoing struggle, but i'm glad the message is still coming through.
Painted my friends Stormcast army at the start of lockdown. Was fun to paint lots of armour lol.
Yes, love it. The 3 points are golden and I'm glad you put them in there. Magnus the burgundy looks great!
Glad to hear the points were on point! And thank you!
Sent here from Benjamin. Seen a few videos now u have a new subscriber. Fantastic work of what I have seen already looking forward to getting through the rest of ur videos. Many thanks Sean.
What a magnificent result! Painting is gorgeous and the video very easy to watch. Nice work!
Thaks Viv!
I really enjoyed that, thanks! The techniques you used fit the model really well.
As for commissions, I've done some in the past and plan to do more in the future. It's really fun bringing other people's vision to life.
Boss, I just stumbled across your content, and you are a gem. Love your work, information, and just all around perspectives. Keep the vids coming!
I’m in awe over here! This video was so easy and fun to watch. That marble though😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥
Also I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s about a year and a half ago I’m 39. I was afraid my painting days were over but you’ve given me new hope my friend. Keep pushing and if it’s any consolation you helped me see a new possibility and I don’t have to stop painting. Thanks so much again. Looking forward to more videos!!!
Ma maaaaan, that’s what I’m here for! Excited to see what you can make in spite of the Parkinson’s my friend. Also pay Terrainosaur a visit. You’ll hopefully find his stuff very useful
Another ace video, and I loved the finished model! Great work as always.
Thanks bud!
End result is fantastic mate well done. I'm nicking that marble technique too.
Nice! really got me wanting to work more with inks! great video, thanks!
Dude as always ..marvellous
I loved the marble technique I’ve honestly never seen it,I’ll have to try it
Thanks! Certainly worth a go! Just be sure and tape it up to stop it moving!
I love the fact that you paint to your strengths with having MS. You make so much sense, dude. I love watching ms paints. Inspirational
Always gotta strength play, and never mention what you can’t do or you’re trash at.
Pretty sure Sun Tzu wrote that.
Great video man! That things looks wicked good! LOVE the marble effects. Def going to try that out
Thanks bud! Let me know how it goes when you have a try. Surprisingly easy but I imagine I was very lucky!
Way to go man, looks fantastic. Looks way better than tabletop BUT still feels achievable.
Glad to help out mate.
Oh that peel away for the marble, that... I made audible noises of delight followed by my pen furiously hitting the paper. I'm putting that into my toolkit.
Superb workmanship thanks for posting
This has really inspired me to really delve into ink paints. I've had some for some time but I've only ever used them to make glazes. Also, first time properly seeing the marble technique. HOLY SHIT. Doing that soon. Additionally will also be stealing the clearfix technique for... many things, lol. Awesome! So glad I found this channel as another Commission Painter!
Thank you bud! And thank you for the patronage. Big love! I stole the clearfix technique off luke at GeekGaming anyway so steal your heart out!
Beautiful paint, beautiful base, beautiful job mate, well done. And ty for showing easy techniques for people with hand problems. It now makes me more confident known I can give it a go meself.😊
Fantastic work. I've just recently been redirected to your channel. I must say, I'm impressed. I have just got back into painting miniatures myself and you give loads of inspiration. Thank you. Iook forward to more.
Thank you for checking in! And welcome back to the hobby.
Awesome work Dave!
I love your enthusiastic response to your own marble painting. That is such a cool effect.
It was pure surprise that it worked, hahaha.
*I do see the drag star hair and I love it*
Great job mate! 👏
dam the marble effect is amazing
Thank you! Surprised myself with it, haha
hey mate - I just discovered your vids, cheers for your work they're great!
Oh man, "movers and shakers" I just got that...
Anyways, love the final outcome. I especially love the metallics on the wings. Very nice.
Haha, accidental marketing win when I was trying out different intros. Thank you!
You are very humble, your work is highly professional!
Really like the marble effect. I've heard it mentioned so many times but finally seeing it in action, it's a winner
Another quality video. Great job.
Thank you, bud!
Sweet video, great intro, huge result. I dig your style. 👍🤘🏻
Thanks, bud!
Loving your content mate.. thank you
Cheers! Thanks for watching and enjoying!
Well done, really like how it turned out! As for your question - I dropped my amateur status at the age of 41 this year (that's why I'm sitting the Olympic Games out) and I have one "golden" thought about it. When you paint as a hobby, you paint WHAT, WHEN and HOW you want. That's rarely the case when it's your job :D CHEERS
Very cool my man. New to the channel and although I don't paint minis or play or collect, I just love watching all you guys work.
Thanks for watching bud! We aim to be the new generation of easy watching Bob Ross with minis!
Great work mate looks fantastic!
Cheers!
Always amazing 🤩 great work
Thanks Jason!
Awesome paint work Dave
I actually recently painted a combat patrol of Imperial Fist for a friend of mine and they turned out pretty good. He seemed quite happy with them. Although for a little gag I did sneak in a Alpha Legionnaire in, and it was funny when he finally noticed.
wow that marble effect is dope love the vid
Thanks, Dan!
Awesome stuff mate, video and model are both great.
Thank you bud! Looking forward to seeing you again soon btw! ... or your mum n' dad... whichever! haha
@@MSPaints haha, ill pop in as soon as i get some spends mate, trying to whittle down the pile of shame before buying more.
This is great!
Man, I haven't heard that intro soundtrack since I was about 8... i loved that ps1 port, i still have the cheatcodes memorised 😅
Hi Dave, I was pointed to you channel from one of Luke's videos and love yours and Luke's down to earth approach.
I am sorry to hear about our health issues and hope that you are keeping well in the current situation the world is in.
I struggle with painting as I am colour blind and while I can quite happily follow a tutorial I don't really have the confidence to go it alone so to speak. For instance I could do a base coat but would not be sure how to go about doing it.
Keep the videos coming.
Best wishes, Mark
I'm thinking of tackling the issue of colour blindness down the line. I gotta do some research first though! Always remember your models are your own. Experiment however you want and have fun. Are you worried about spoiling expensive models, or worried about people talking sh*t at the gaming table?
I painted a zombicide black plague box for a friend. He seems happy with it and I learned a lot. Would do again.
Can be pleasant experience. Always good when it is!
Man that was f@&king awesome
Really nice video again, it's great to see a simpler plan produce such great results (who needs fucking edge highlighting!?). Can't wait for the next video
Ain’t nobody need edges that crisp! We ride together, we dry (brush) together!
Dear Dave, totally brilliant!
Dear Cooper! Thanks again!
Nice one dude! Looks epic
Thanks, Chris!
This model looks so good. Love this video.
Respect. Thank you!
Really well done Dave!
Thanks, Tom!
Awesome work man
Thank you, citizen!
Awesome job fella! 👌🏻
Thank you!
The marble looks epic mate!
Had a accident with my right arm when I was younger .. so I don't have slot of feeling etc.. was ready to give up on the painting... Till now.. you legend man 🤘🤘 sorry for the corny comment.. but thank you.. made my day.
Don't worry about the corny! That's the kind of stuff that keeps me keeping faith in the brand and the idea of the channel, mate! Please keep me updated with how you get on and if anything i do makes life easier for you.
Wonderful
this honestly inspires my imagination when it comes to painting mire than, like, golden demon sort of stuff and i deeply appreciate this.
Glad to hear you’ve been inspired man. What are you working on next?
@@MSPaints recently started 3d printing and getting back into painting after quite a few years and i'm working on some pieces from bestarium (and a few warhammer underworlds warbands with the wurmspat finally primed and ready to start!)
(also! not a man.)
Loved this man
Thanks bud!
This was fu👌🏾king awesome bro!!
Cheers, Thomas! Thanks for watching.
We all know that the name of that miniature should be Rufus The Red (has a crane by his bed).
Or at least the people that appreciate iron maiden b sides. 👍
Very nice, may be relatively low effort physically but that smart choice of colors really elevates the final results
Thanks. Think it was a vague triad on the wheel. Similar to the box art but not as offensively primary.
Excellent video, I'd like to see you paint more large models
I’d like to exclusively paint large ones to be honest!
Discovered your channel from Miniature wargames.I too have MS and come from Grimsby! I too have been published in MW!
Like your attitude to MS all strength to your elbow.
My family motto is Shit happens but better when it's not happening to you!
Just remember you've got MS the fucker hasn't got you.
Stay strong , chilled and well mate
That's one small world! haha. Another good one is 'All MS, No BS.' You can use that if you want. Thanks for stopping by, bud, and happy to hear from a fellow Master of The Quaking Palm.
Or in my case the dragging foot and MS grip where it feels like you have had a chunk taken out of your side by a great white shark.MS really is the gift that keeps on giving!
Are you still living in Grimsby?
@@davidtuck8584 I'm not mate! escaped at 19 to Sheffield and now York. I visit family now and again though. Yourself?
Yes still here! Furthest I got was Caistor now back, got my own wargame set up in a 5.5 sq metre outbuilding. Game every week, subject to Covid. One of the heroes who games does all the painting for me I just base them.I am at Hammerhead Dave,Malc and friends Big dark age game.If you are there come over and say hello. Your dad isn't Tim W is he ?
A few years back I took on painting Bob Olleys Scrunts for him and it was a blast, super nice bloke and awesome fun minis to paint. He's still my favourite old school sculptor.
Going to use the marble technique for Morathi’s pillar. Starting to paint my friends Daughters of Khaine army next week.
Great job sir!
Cheers babes!
Cracking work on that model. I have done some painting for others, but ended up paying someone else to paint mine as I didn't have time for my own.
It’s rough for sure. I’ve taken one job since this and no more. Not sure I have the time either!
Nice try with the caveat prior to agreeing to the supposed quality with your client. Man, that is a NEXT LEVEL paint job and MS or no it is a work of art. Cheers. Love the content
Thought I would mention there is a spray you can use to get rid of your seagulls if memory serves its called 12 gauge 😀
Most legal thing i have are nerf guns. But the great British seagull laughs in the face of nerf guns.
I had a go at commission painting once. I don't know if I'd do it again. The guy asked me to paint a unit of 30 very boring looking historical dudes to "see my skill level." Did it, never heard from him again.
I actually think he asked me to do it just to get a unit painted.
I am now buying magnus though. Thanks Dave!
Yeaaaaaah I used to get a lot of that crap when I was in early music days. Generally able to filter them out early doors now. Still get the odd scammer trying to get a months work out of me for nothing of course.
That often seems to go with the territory with all sorts of creative work; I've had these issues with playing at music events or designing promotional materials for such things. You shouldn't have to feel bad for chasing up payment. It's tricky when the work intersects with pleasure because some folks don't seem to value the time it takes to get these things done!
Love it when someone gets straight to the point within the first 5 seconds of their video. Awesome work.
Hahaha, i was conscious that i usually waffle a lot. Hahaha.
"how good do you have to be to take commissions ?" -As good as you are now as long as you find someone willing to pay.
looks fantastic. I've been hand painting/stippling my green marble, definitely trying that baby wipe technique for my next model.
Really nice stuff, that marble effect though, i may need to ditch the idea of hand painting my marble effects and give this a go with the baby wipe and airbrush! beautiful work!!!
Results look more natural too, i thnk
I like your rasta. And lol @ your "drag race" comment.
The marble looked sensayshh!
Thanks!
Fuck yeah, I'm so stoked to see someone else using gold sharpie's on their models. I've gotten shit for it in the past and I never understood why. It's just another medium to get color on the model at the end of the day
All he needs is the 6 infinity stones.
There's some great music in this vid.
Some day, I'll be able to do something like this. But I doubt it's going to be any time soon
Course you can - i've only been doing it 3 years or so, and i'm poorly-sick so you can totally do it, faster than you think. Just don't worry about getting there, you'll get there.
Been painting professionally myself for a couple years on and off. It's mostly been either local, or for a youtube studio who does Battle Reports (MWG), and all of those interactions have been positive! Sometimes the slog can get to you if you don't price things properly, or are stuck with models (especially large amounts thereof) that you're not too fond of. Overall though, good experience.
My most recent experience I've been working on a full Slaanesh army over a couple months for a client planning to take it to the LVO in January, and I gotta say, while he's been an amazing client, I think I oversold myself on being able to deliver well above my Tabletop Standard within a reasonable timeframe. Not that it's not possible, but it can be very draining, trying to do a satisfying quality paintjob on large swathes of infantry.
I think the commission painting thing is really great, it's just important to know yourself, what you want to paint, an have time and energy for.
Need to get my hands on an airbrush. Should really help with my arm problems
Yes mate! They make life a lot easier for certain things.
@@MSPaints got any recommendations fella? Might start cheap to learn what not to do.
@@seanclarke8015 If you wanna start cheap you can go for a kkmoon and just an unbranded nail airbrush compressor. They're good to learn with and rag on while you get into the habits of cleaning, cup dumping. It was important for me just to understand that stuff, get an actual feel for it in my hand before i moved up to Harder and Steenbeck - which has been a dream. Tried Iwata before... destroyed a few Iwata Neos for sure... but the Steenbeck seems to be the toughest brand for every day use. But you're looking at £100 for a lower-mid card airbrush there. Best to learn cheap!
@@MSPaints thanks dude. I really appreciate you getting back to me with that. I'll be sure to get one and let you know how it goes.
I'm not much of a player but background is more model building and figure painting. Playing has always been a struggle as the rules and stats are so many to remember but especially now for me as well as I have also been diagnosed with MS May of this year and processing to much can stress and fatigue me quickly. Anyhow I'm still able to build and paint which is my passion anyway. You paint very well and enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work!
I've done one commission job so far, for a guy in the local board gaming scene, painting up his Gloomhaven minis.
I was worried going in that i might find having to work to some one else's standards and brief confining, but it was actually really liberating in a lot of ways and the client was over the moon with the end result...... even if I might have only charged for half the time it took to paint them.
In fact, I enjoyed it so much im thinking of making a career shift into it, once I can work out a better studio name than the one I've currently got in mind.
I am an average painter and i use to paint for money...iuse to tell potential customers im ''OK''. Got a decent amount of work. ''Professional'' i always see as a hobby turned into a business...ie painter/gamer/ dominatrix.
Hahaha, took me a second to follow you on dominatrix but I get you
@@MSPaints As brits weve got the sense of humour to laugh at it without upsetting anyone .
I've done one commission for my brother, I didn't charge, but the experience was great
Lumineth wind spirits come with a complete upper half extra and I didn’t know how best to use this to bodge a second wind spirit out of the same box…. That technique with the wire and the sculpt stuff is definitely doable to create a tornado effect. I’m going to try that. Thanks
Yes mate! Will absolutely work. I’ve done something similar to make a swirling vortex for my Lord Kroaks Balewind vortex! Send me the results when you’re done!
Another good one. I’m stealing that gold and strong tone gag.
It seems Luke is getting an Irish distributor so I’ll be picking up the base ready stuff you recommended sooner than expected.
As for homoerotic Space Marines? I would suggest that you turn your attention to “Space Marine” by Ian Watson. Excellent novel and well worth a look.
Thank you for the recommendation! Yeah man, I think Broadsword has the stock already! Which is great stuff.
I'd like to be a patreon supporter patron soon.
Also, I don't consider you to be an 'Average' painter.... Powers that be had to give you MS just to give the rest of us a chance, if you know what I mean.
Please yell at the seagulls for me!
Haha! Thank you. Yeah, I’m gonna give them a big talking to tomorrow!
Hey! Could you please tell me what the cool whistle song in the background is? I’ve heard it a few times and would like to know
Joe Manganiello asked me to paint a few minis, I painted an Age of Sigmar mini, and two War Cry monsters for him to use in his D&D games. He seemed to really like them. I had fun painting them, hopefully he starts having his weekly games again soon and can use them.
It'll be cool to see them being used.
Other than that, I've painted a few minis for friends. I don't charge, I don't feel right taking money from friends. I do it because I enjoy the challenge... at most I'll let them buy me lunch. ha.
I hope you charged big Joe though! Amazing dude!
Awesome result! What was your goal with the purple oil wash? Did you end up removing it from all the raised areas? In the video it looks pretty similar to the base color.
Some of the raised areas yeah. The process was way more experimental In full, I spent a couple of hours going back and forth and laying up. Was a really nice glaze between the black and burgundy though.
I've found this out fairly recently. I'd consider myself very much an "average" painter, most of my paintjobs are "tabletop quality+" I'd wager? Not going to win any painting competitions, but nice to look at on the table. But, apparently I've wowed my mates enough that a few of them were willing to pay me to paint up some of their shit as well. It's been an interesting experience!
I do commissions all the time and I paint like a heroclix painter. There is so many people who don't care what it looks like as long as it's not grey etc.
I just started doing commission work due to the fact that my mental, emotional and physical health has declined. I started with one friend, who showed another friend and that's how it started. I struggle because of my bipolar 2 depression, in which I get hyper highs and hypo lows more often than I should. Thankfully, it takes some nappy time and a hard reset of the brain to get motivated, even if it is 3 -5 business days later. :)
That’s rough bud, but it sounds like you’ve found a ways of coping. Nice balance to earn some coin and do the thing that keeps you zen. ❤️
In the same why you made a dry brush box, do you think there is some way to make a reusable device for marble effects? Like a tenis racket with baby wipe material stretched across it?
That’s an interesting idea. I assume the baby wipes invariably get so clogged as a result, and moving it can smudge the paint or ruin the effect overall. I’ll have a think on that one. Gotta save the environment where we can!
Fab 🤩
Wow you did an insane job on this big minis ^^ what is the thing you use to make the marble effect? I didn't catch the name ^^
The baby wipe! Wet wipe.
@@MSPaints thank you my friend
