I love how you can tell that the writers for super really loved og dragon ball, the hypnosis move was something that was used once and only for a gag and yet they still brought back. And bringing back the turtle school speech brings a tear to my eye
Actually twice: First against Goku in a serious fight in a the tournament, and then in a not so serious moment in the next tournament to transform the "wolf guy?" (forgot his name).

Roshi’s final Kamehameha is one of my favorite moments in this arc. You feel for the Hermit students when Goku straight up leaves a fight to bring back the master who was with him since childhood.
And the best part? This isn’t the only episode centered around him. Tune in next time for more based Roshi content

Yes, toriyama does in fact create the characters from dragon quest-it’s why the art styles look so similar. My guess is that the character from this episode is a little homage to the games.
Ps all of Roshi’s moves here have been revealed since og dragon ball: evil containment wave, buff roshi, sleepy boy, etc.

This was *the* kamehameha. This is genuinely the best kamehameha in the entirety of dragon ball. It wasn’t the strongest, but it felt the most complete and the most perfected
Roshis kamehameha pose is always the most satisfying, from the first kamehameha we get to see to the last one he does. Its always the same. He bulks up and hunches a bit then holds his hands out like that... its just so ASMR. Its just so awesome to see his huge bulking body against the kaamehameha, it just looks way better than with any other character.
It’s a perfect beam. Unlike everyone else who uses it, the beam doesn’t leak energy or destroy things around it. It is all concentrated into the beam
Roshi having a moment in this tournament with the kamehameha was definitely cool to see!
Something most reactors miss, is that Roshi's Kamehameha is a PERFECTED Kamehameha, gained from decades of training and mastering the Technique. Because if you see everyone else use their Beam Techniques, the Beams aren't stable, and shake the ground, break the ground around it, and effect the environment without touching it. This is cause of lack of Ki control, excess Ki leaking out of the beam. But rewatch Roshi's Kamehameha. It is Perfected. There is no damage to the Environment at all. All the Ki built up to make the attack 100% hits the enemy, not a single bit is expelled or wasted. Not even Goku can do that. Only Roshi, with his Decades of dedicated perfection to mastering the technique.

This chapter was a huge hug too people who grew up with OG Dragon Ball.... One thing I love of Super its that Roshi have more screen time, fighting with Freezer mans, then here and then in the Moro arc...

The anime gets alot of hate for many things, some of it even deserved but this one, is one of many other moments they did amazingly. Giving Roshi the spotlight again, something we don't get to see even in DBZ is really amazing and really gives us the OG DB feeling. Highlighting Roshi's relationship with Goku and Krillin, being master and students really was just the icing on the cake

Fun fact: Roshi ate grass called Paradise Grass (or the Paradise Herb) which is similar but different than something like the fountain of youth, basically this grass gives an extended life span which it has seemed to have worked considering that Roshi is 350 years old, Roshi also claims that if he ate more he could live another 1,000 years. This really gives more impact behind the line where he said he has experience.
Heck, that experience is the whole reason he was even selected for their team. And it definitely paid off.

As a long time fan of Original Dragon Ball (before DBZ), this episode means a lot to me!
I feel like the rules being broken or not by Roshi carrying around those containment jars is kind of moot anyway. Since if he weren't allowed to have those, he could instead just use the Evil Containment Wave to hurl foes straight out of the arena, cutting out the middle man of first trapping them inside something. So regardless, the technique could still be used to swiftly knock out opponents all the same.

Roshi is truly still the master, while goku and krillin both have stronger kamehameha's in terms of raw strength and power, roshi's technique and experience truly brings out the maximum potential of the technique.

I believe this was the highest rated episode in Japan. Japan loves Roshi.

One of my favorite episodes. Roshi just goated. I think it would've hit harder if he actually passed away though, and stayed dead because of his age. But still, love the ep and I think this was like Japan's highest rated Super episode or something.
In the japanese version, it's a lot more heart wrenching. Because roshi gives his life And Isn't saying master roshi. Instead says grandpa Over and over. Until he is crying. It's the first time in the show that goku acknowledge is roshi as a family member To him

I grew up with these characters. When I saw the premier, i legit thought he died, i was bawling.
I grew up watching OG and DBZ on TV during 90s-00s as a kid. I can tell you that this moment was one of the best. The internet was broke back when super was airing.
When Roshi states that he could threaten Goku, he’s not saying he’ll be able to threaten SSB Goku or even SSG Goku, he’s saying he’ll be strong enough to make Goku have to use excess energy that he otherwise shouldn’t have to waste.
A lot of the stuff in this episode is from OGDB. Yes, that includes the Seduction technique.

Toriyama is the main illustrator for the Dragon Quest video games, yes. But if you're thinking about The Adventure of Dai, then no, the artist was someone else (Koji Inada, plus Riku Sanjo as writer), but since it's a spin-off it's obviously inspired by Toriyama's style.
