In the US, scam calls eagerly prey on immigrants and the elderly. Parul, our protagonist in Is This Mrs. Varma?, is an older, recently-widowed Indian woman. It should be an easy target for a scammer, but Parul surprisingly takes the lead by flipping the power on who actually is doing the scheming.
You think she will be swindled, but she proves that she is not one to get scammed. She has a sharpness and resilience which makes us root for her arc. It is compelling to see an immigrant woman empower herself, especially because narratives starring Asian women over the age of 50 are limited. By being the only visible character in the film, her hero’s journey from being vulnerable to active is inspiring. Moreover, the film’s uniqueness derives from having only one actress the entirety of the film in one location, with a compelling plot, a feat that was planned for the year of COVID.
Additionally, the movie tracks a widow who is still depressed after her husband’s death, unable to leave the house. Parul begins the film deflated and reclusive. She rifles through her closet and desires to choose colorful clothing, but she has to choose white since she’s widowed. She admits her husband took care of money matters, much like many older Indian women in the US. However, her smarts make her rise up to the situation and become strong. Throughout the scam call, she gains acceptance of his demise and takes control of her circumstances enough that she is able to finally leave her home, wearing color and feeling a little more vibrant.
Is This Mrs. Varma? exhibits an Indian American woman “taking the lead” two-fold: following Parul’s beautiful journey of not only seizing the reins over a scam caller, but also overcoming her solitary grief.
