Prince's bass lives on? Yep

  • Back in 2017 I paid a visit to Simon Farmer at Gus Guitars to check out the very last bass that Prince ever ordered before he tragically passed away. Well, a couple of days ago Simon reached out to say that he’d received a custom order to make another one of these awesome basses!
Here’s what happened when I got my hands on this phenomenal 5-string (based on Gus Guitars’ G3 Four Active model) before it made its way to its new owner in Hong Kong.
As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)

As a luthier myself I can honestly say that this man is an artist in every sense of the word. Creative genius. It's hard enough just keeping the craft alive when there are so few skilled luthiers, then he goes and creates this beautiful, complex and utterly astonishing work of art that I can't even wrap my head around how the hell he managed to pull it off.

The weirdest thing about the bass to me, is 25 frets, usually basses have 20, 21, 22, or 24. (Occasionally you’ll find 19 like fender shortscales, or 26 on 6 strings, and even a fretless with the range of a 30 fret) for being such a round, even number (even though 25 is odd), it feels so weird seeing 25 frets on a bass like that. Since it wasn’t on the bass prince ordered, I have to assume it was a feature custom ordered by the client, regardless, I hope they’re enjoying playing that bass as I am just looking at it!

basses are designed to have the jack either going in at the front of the body (old fender style) or at the side near the bottom of the instrument, away from the cutaway where the knee would go. This particular bass has a jack there but almost at the rear of the instrument.

depends what slap sound you like, the most commons are the j bass type (2 pickups bridge/ neck) or the stingray (bridge humbucker), but there´s also some other great alternatives (some cheaper some more expensive), imo i love the warwick/ spector/ mtd "clanky" sound, it doesn´t work with all types of music but is a sound that suits me and other people aswell (i´m a warwick guy btw with jazz style pickups), my personal recomendation is to see videos of different basses being slaped and see which one you like the most ;)

There is no "better bass" for anything. The perfect bass does not exist. There is only the right instrument for you and your music and that comes from experience. You may really like a certain bass players but you may find that you don't really like the feeling or tone of their instrument once you try it. I know this is not the answer you wanted, but it is the most honest answer you will get.

I can't get past the aluminium tubing looking like penises. Maybe something that would have suited prince but it doesn't work for me.

Wow I didn't know someone wearing gloves could piss me off so much. For the love of god take off that nasty glove!!!!! It's so ridiculous

The glove is there because he suffers from a medical (neurological I believe) problem and the glove makes it easier for him to control his fingers and play the bass.

Why can't you just say "he tragically died"? What's with the fascination these days of trying to avoid the "die" word? "Passed away" - > "died", "passed" - > "died", "passing" - > "died"/"death" (depending on context). Just use 'real' terms instead of some woolly nonsense that's designed for people who believe there's an afterlife.
As got the bass (back on topic), very nice!

The bass actually sounds terrible to me. No character, the harmonics are dull, the treble is non existent...sorry Scott.
Expensive and well made as it is...doesn't cut it. The lights are cool though!
